Book excerpt: Census records and name lists for New York are found mostly at the county level, which is why this work shows precisely which census records or census substitutes exist for each of New York's sixty-two counties and where they can be found. In addition to the numerous statewide official censuses taken by New York, this work contains references to census substitutes and name lists for time periods in which the state did not take an official census. It also shows the location of copies of federal census records and provides county boundary maps and numerous state census facsimiles and extraction forms.

Book Tree Balance Indices

  • Author : Mareike Fischer
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-12-02
  • ISBN : 3031398009
  • Pages : 398 pages

Download or read book Tree Balance Indices written by Mareike Fischer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-02 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you are looking for an introduction to the field of tree balance, a reference work on the multitude of available balance indices or inspiration for your future research, this book offers all three. It delves into the significance of tree balance in phylogenetics and other research domains, where numerous indices have been introduced over the years. While the variations in definitions and underlying principles among these indices have long remained a challenge, this survey addresses the problem by presenting formal definitions of balance and imbalance indices and establishing desirable properties. The book is comprehensive both in the inclusion of a variety of indices and in the information provided on them: the authors meticulously analyze and categorize established indices, shedding light on their general, statistical and combinatorial properties. They reveal that, while some known balance indices fail to meet the most basic criteria, certain tree shape statistics from other contexts prove to be effective balance measures. The collected properties are neatly presented, numerous new results are established, open research questions are highlighted, and possible applications are discussed. Reviewing over twenty (im)balance indices, a wealth of mathematical insights is provided, accompanied by real-world examples showcasing the importance of tree balance in diverse research areas. Catering to researchers, students, mathematicians, and biologists, the book can be used as a textbook for university seminars, a reference on tree balance, and as a source of inspiration for future research. It is accompanied by the free R package 'treebalance', a powerful tool to further explore and apply the discussed concepts, and a website allowing quick access to the main information and the latest developments in the field.

Book Vergil s Green Thoughts

Download or read book Vergil s Green Thoughts written by Rebecca Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eclogues, Georgics, and Aeneid abound with plants, yet much Vergilian criticism underestimates their significance beyond attractive background detail or the occasional symbolic set-piece. This volume joins the growing field of nature-centred studies of literature, looking head-on at Vergil's plants and trees to reveal how fundamental they are to an understanding of the poet's outlook on religion, culture, and mankind's place within the world. Divided into two parts, the first explores the religious and more diffusely numinous aspects of Vergil's plants, from awe-inspiring sacred groves to divinely promoted fields of corn, and shows how both cultivated and uncultivated plants fit within and help to shape the complex landscape of Vergilian (and, more broadly, Roman) religious thought. In the second half of the book, the focus shifts towards human interactions with plants from the perspectives of both cultivation and relaxation, exploring the love-hate relationship with vegetation which sometimes supports and sometimes contests the human self-image as the world's dominant species. Combining a series of close readings of a wide range of passages with the identification of broader patterns of association, Vergil's Green Thoughts appositely reveals and celebrates the complexity and variety of Vergilian flora.

MUM and DAD do their parenting duties but only when they are not bickering themselves over the chocolate brownies. Mum is going to miss her chocolate brownies. So too is Dad! SERGIO complains about chopped down trees and burning fires of destruction of the forest. Animals perish in the fires; animals are orphaned in the chaos and destruction. Soot clings to everything; trees die forever. The rainforest is disappearing - the lungs of the Earth are wheezing. This is everybody's environment and everybody's planet. Katty and Jake are on a mission, and the battle is on against the filthy pollutants. With the help of their school science teacher, MISS VIOLET, things were going to change before it was too late. Miss Violet conducts pollution experiments, and they begin a crusade to help the Amazon rainforest and to start their tree planting campaign. Katty is one small girl in a very big world who witnesses deforestation. There are a handful of suspects and a lot more baddies. The rainforest is filled with eerie chitter-chatter whispers. All aboard the journey of discovery, where nothing is as it seems! Everything is burning out of control. Time is running out. Seriously! The trees are burning; the forest is disappearing. A mystery story that is not actually a mystery! Get it? Oh, you defo will get it. Boomerang! is a children's story detailing the adventures of Katty, her brother Jake and their parents as they travel to the Amazon rainforest. Amongst other things, they discover magical trees called the Mystrees, come face to face with a caiman crocodile and meet a talking owl. With these mystical elements, the story has many aspects that are enjoyed in children's stories in the current market. But what is unique here is the way the author delicately, but with conviction, addresses the issues of climate change in a way that children will understand. This is the biggest strength of the story. The writing goes up a gear when the animals, the pollutants and Katty talk about the environmental issues and so it's clear that this is something the author is passionate about. Overall, it's a fun story about family but also about standing up for the environmental issues you believe in.

Book Storytelling and Conversation

Download or read book Storytelling and Conversation written by Elizabeth A. Winston and published by Gallaudet University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intriguing book, renowned sociolinguistics experts explore the importance of discourse analysis, a process that examines patterns of language to understand how users build cooperative understanding in dialogues. It presents discourse analyses of sign languages native to Bali, Italy, England, and the United States. Studies of internal context review the use of space in ASL to discuss space, how space in BSL is used to "package" complex narrative tasks, how signers choose linguistic tools to structure storytelling, and how affect, emphasis, and comment are added in text telephone conversations. Inquiries into external contexts observe the integration of deaf people and sign language into language communities in Bali, and the language mixing that occurs between deaf parents and their hearing children. Both external and internal contexts are viewed together, first in an examination of applying internal ASL text styles to teaching written English to Deaf students and then in a consideration of the language choices of interpreters who must shift footing to manage the "interpreter's paradox." Storytelling and Conversation casts new light on discourse analysis, which will make it a welcome addition to the sociolinguistics canon.
