German wedding in the city of Sheboygan. During all the years of her married life she was a faithful wife and a devoted mother. Her earthly pilgrimage came to a close in the year 1888 and some years later her husband, Leopold Gutsch, passed to the Land Beyond. The later years of his life were spent in the home of his youngest son. Leopold Gutsch was a man of unusual business ability and by continuous application he had the satisfaction of seeing his business, which was started in a very modest way, develop into one of the important brewing establishments of northeastern Wisconsin. He was a man universally esteemed by his fellow associates, strictly honest in all matters of business, friendly and considerate in his regard for others, to whom he often extended a helping hand in the battle of life, a loyal husband and a faithful father and his memory is cherished as among the most valuable assets of the family history. ADOLPH FRED GUTSCH. Well known and prominent among the German-American residents of Sheboygan was Adolph Fred Gutsch, who for many years was extensively and successfully engaged in the brewing business. He was born in the city where his entire life was passed, his birth there occurring September 17, 1858. He was a son of Leopold Gutsch, a native of Baden, Germany, who was born December 20. 1818, and in 1847 emigrated to the United States, making his way at once to Sheboygan. Here he embarked in the brewing business in partnership with his twin brother, Francis. Book This Day We Marched Again

Download or read book This Day We Marched Again written by Jacob Haas and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A testament to the valor and determination of a common soldier On September 17, 1861, twenty-two-year-old Jacob Haas enlisted in the Sheboygan Tigers, a company of German immigrants that became Company A of the Ninth Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Over the next three years, Haas and his comrades marched thousands of miles and saw service in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and the Indian Territory, including pitched battles at Newtonia, Missouri, and Jenkins’ Ferry, Arkansas. Haas describes the war from the perspective of a private soldier and an immigrant as he marches through scorching summers and brutally cold winters to fight in some of the most savage combat in the west. His diary shows us an extraordinary story of the valor and determination of a volunteer soldier. Though his health was ruined by war, Haas voiced no regrets for the price he paid to fight for his adopted country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Lighthouses are a reflection of the human spirit and a mirror to our past.”—from the Introduction No symbol is more synonymous with Wisconsin’s rich maritime traditions than the lighthouse. These historic beacons conjure myriad notions of a bygone era: romance, loneliness, and dependability; dedicated keepers manning the lights; eerie tales of haunted structures and ghosts of past keepers; mariners of yesteryear anxiously hoping to make safe haven around rocky shorelines. If these sentinels could talk, imagine the tales they would tell of ferocious Great Lakes storms taking their toll on vessels and people alike. In this fully updated edition of Wisconsin Lighthouses, Ken and Barb Wardius tell those tales, taking readers on an intimate tour of lighthouses on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Winnebago. Both delightful storytellers and accomplished photographers, the couple complement their engaging text with more than 100 stunning color photographs, along with dozens of archival photos, maps, documents, and artifacts. Detailed “how to get there” directions, up-to-the-minute status reports on each light, and sidebars on everything from lighthouse vocabulary to the often lonely lives of lightkeepers make this the definitive book on Wisconsin’s lighthouses.
