Download or read book Turning Back the Pages written by Ruth W. Millar and published by Coteau Books. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saskatoon Public Library’s history is suffused with drama. Floods, fires, boardroom battles, clashes with City Hall, strikes, bold art robberies, outraged and belligerent patrons, pilfering and mutilation of materials, stalkers and flashers, animals at large on the premises, theft of computer equipment, and a covered-up dispute that sent its chief librarian fleeing into obscurity – all appear in these pages. Set these stormy incidents against a historical matrix of two world wars, a major Depression, world-wide epidemics, and a revolution in technology, and the colourful pageantry of the Saskatoon Library history emerges. But mostly the Library quietly hummed along – efficient, orderly and welcoming. It has been a symbol of public service, a haven for troubled souls, an escape for the bored, as well as a treasure house for information seekers. As an institution, the SPL has had a remarkably progressive history of service and compassion – even missionary zeal – reaching out to the disabled, the illiterate, the poor, “New Canadians” and Aboriginal folk.

Download or read book Resource Strategies in the 90s written by Annette Melville and published by Association of Research Libr. This book was released on 1994 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992 the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) surveyed administrators in member libraries regarding resource strategies of the previous three years. This paper summarizes revenue activities, adaptive tactics, and budgetary practices reported by 87 Canadian, U.S. private, and U.S. public university libraries and establishes a baseline for comparing these factors. The period from 1990 to 1992 has been a difficult one for ARL members, with the largest reductions in public support experienced by public university libraries. All respondents sought outside revenues to supplement their campus allocations. Virtually every responding library had experienced some form of internal restructuring, and three of every five had eliminated positions over the three-year survey period. Administrators valued flexibility in fund reallocation very highly, but few had much control over carrying unspent funds to the next year. While 88% of respondents expected the demand for services to grow, only 32% anticipated budget increases. Greater selectivity in activities and greater library sharing are likely to result from the economic realities. Three appendixes contain the survey summary results, the cover letter, and the questionnaire. (Contains 33 references.) (SLD)

Download or read book Resource Sharing Today written by Corinne Nyquist and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Budget constraints challenge collection development in unprecedented ways. Collection development has increasingly become a cooperative effort among libraries in geographic proximity. When their own library doesn’t have certain books or journals, users turn to interlibrary loan to obtain the resources they need. However, many library science degree programs don't cover interlibrary loan. Resource Sharing Today is a practical guide to resource sharing starting with the library across town and ending with libraries on the other side of the globe. Chapters cover everything from the ALA’s interlibrary loan form to successful innovations such as Virginia Tech’s ILLiad to New York’s IDS (Information Delivery Service). Appendices include regional, state, national, and international ILL codes, ALA and IFLA forms, open access agreements, and purchase on demand plans.
