In the fall of 1848, the pioneers then residing in the newly organized county of Auglaize were called upon for the first time to record their votes for county, State and Federal officers. Party lines were as closely observed at that time as at the present day. The Democratic, Whig, and Free Soil parties each had its adherents in the county.
