Book Independent Living Specialist Assessment of Skills Measuring Areas for Independent Living

Download or read book Independent Living Specialist Assessment of Skills Measuring Areas for Independent Living written by Margaret L. Sanders and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the acquisition of skills for independent living is a positive aspect for all persons including persons with disabilities (Cairns, 2001), many programs differ in their concept and identification of skills that promote independent living for persons with disabilities (Iceman & Dunlap, 1984). Similarly, the United States and many other countries are facing problems in defining independent living (Tate, 1984). Giordano and D'Alonzo (1994) noted that a precise and universally agreed upon definition of independent living is elusive. Similarly, Barnes (2005) noted that there was no uniform definition for independent living. Independent living specialists are employees staffed at centers for independent living that have direct professional experience with identifying skills that promote independent living for persons with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of agreement among independent living specialists in assessing an instrument measuring areas for independent living. The Ansell Casey Life Skills Assessment (ACLSA) Caregiver 4, a measuring instrument used for assessing adults' independent living skills, was used in this study. Independent living specialists from the Illinois Network of Centers for Independent Living (INCIL) were the population this study. Descriptive and parametric statistical analyses were used in analyzing the data.

Book Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities

Download or read book Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-08-31 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. To receive SSDI or SSI disability benefits, an individual must meet the statutory definition of disability, which is "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity [SGA] by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." SSA uses a five-step sequential process to determine whether an adult applicant meets this definition. Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities examines ways to collect information about an individual's physical and mental (cognitive and noncognitive) functional abilities relevant to work requirements. This report discusses the types of information that support findings of limitations in functional abilities relevant to work requirements, and provides findings and conclusions regarding the collection of information and assessment of functional abilities relevant to work requirements.
