Book Rethinking the Concept of Law of Nature

Download or read book Rethinking the Concept of Law of Nature written by Yemima Ben-Menahem and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book subjects the traditional concept of law of nature to critical examination. There are two kinds of reasons that invite this reexamination, one deriving from philosophical concerns over the traditional concept, the other motivated by theoretical and practical changes in science. One of the philosophical worries is that the idiom of law of nature, especially when combined with the notion of laws 'governing' individual events and processes, is no longer as intelligible as it used to be in the theistic context in which the formulation of laws became central to science. The traditional concept is also challenged in various ways by contemporary scientific theories such as quantum mechanics, chaos theory and the general theory of relativity. It is no longer clear that there are any universal laws, laws do not always guarantee predictability, and the border between physical and mathematical considerations is constantly shifting. The most difficult challenge, perhaps, is to come up with a scientific explanation of the origin of laws. Wrestling with these intriguing problems, the papers in this volume broaden both our understanding of the natural order and our desiderata of scientific explanation.

Book Carving Nature at Its Joints

Download or read book Carving Nature at Its Joints written by Joseph Keim Campbell and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections on the metaphysics and epistemology of classification from a distinguished group of philosophers. Contemporary discussions of the success of science often invoke an ancient metaphor from Plato's Phaedrus: successful theories should "carve nature at its joints." But is nature really "jointed"? Are there natural kinds of things around which our theories cut? The essays in this volume offer reflections by a distinguished group of philosophers on a series of intertwined issues in the metaphysics and epistemology of classification. The contributors consider such topics as the relevance of natural kinds in inductive inference; the role of natural kinds in natural laws; the nature of fundamental properties; the naturalness of boundaries; the metaphysics and epistemology of biological kinds; and the relevance of biological kinds to certain questions in ethics. Carving Nature at Its Joints offers both breadth and thematic unity, providing a sampling of state-of-the-art work in contemporary analytic philosophy that will be of interest to a wide audience of scholars and students concerned with classification.

Book The Philosophy of Physical Science

Download or read book The Philosophy of Physical Science written by Sir Arthur Eddington and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often said that there is no "philosophy of science", but only the philosophies of certain scientists. But in so far as we recognize an authoritative body of opinion which decides what is and what is not accepted as present-day physics, there is an ascertainable present-day philosophy of physical science. It is the philosophy to which those who follow the accepted practice of science stand committed by their practice. This book contains the substance of the course of lectures which the author Eddington delivered as Tarner Lecturer of Trinity College Cambridge in the Easter Term 1938. The lectures have afforded him an opportunity of developing more fully than in his earlier books the principles of philosophic thought associated with the modern advances of physical science.

Book Intuitive Axiomatic Set Theory

Download or read book Intuitive Axiomatic Set Theory written by José L Garciá and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set theory can be rigorously and profitably studied through an intuitive approach, thus independently of formal logic. Nearly every branch of Mathematics depends upon set theory, and thus, knowledge of set theory is of interest to every mathematician. This book is addressed to all mathematicians and tries to convince them that this intuitive approach to axiomatic set theory is not only possible but also valuable. The book has two parts. The first one presents, from the sole intuition of "collection" and "object", the axiomatic ZFC-theory. Then, we present the basics of the theory: the axioms, well-orderings, ordinals and cardinals are the main subjects of this part. In all, one could say that we give some standard interpretation of set theory, but this standard interpretation results in a multiplicity of universes. The second part of the book deals with the independence proofs of the continuum hypothesis (CH) and the axiom of choice (AC), and forcing is introduced as a necessary tool, and again the theory is developed intuitively, without the use of formal logic. The independence results belong to the metatheory, as they refer to things that cannot be proved, but the greater part of the arguments leading to the independence results, including forcing, are purely set-theoretic. The book is self-contained and accessible to beginners in set theory. There are no prerequisites other than some knowledge of elementary mathematics. Full detailed proofs are given for all the results.
