Download or read book Indeed Jasmine written by Deborah Gerrish and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indeed Jasmine is a collection of poems that are verbal paintings, art of the particular, in which visualized thought and sensory language are born out of nothing—the place where the luminous intersects the obscure. Each poem experienced carries the reader through a journey of emotions and draws one in again and again in a fraternal embrace. These painterly poems celebrate life through the lens of family, the natural world, the spiritual world, and express how it feels to be human through the gamut of joy, suffering, and longing. Whether it be haiku, ode, elegy, lyric, or narrative, the poet invites the reader into a world of poetic conversations that vacillate between epiphany, mystery, despair, and exaltation. Each vignette is chock-full of personal witnessing. As the poet confronts grief and human relationships, lauds beauty and the enigma of the natural world, and raises philosophical questions, these poetic songs delight, enlighten, and draw the reader into a deeper understanding of the wonderment of being alive.

Smith. WAR IN THE SMOKING RUINS OF TOMORROW! Thirty years ago, the world ended. Giant electrovoric ants and pterodons came through a rift in space-time, millions of humans died, and that was that. Without electricity, human ingenuity has provided some creative work-arounds to the energy problem, but most people survive at subsistence level. For Chuck Gordon, the simple life of a rancher was enough. But then he met a mysterious dying stranger and now he’s on the road of destiny across America accompanied by a warrior monk, a beautiful dragon tamer, a runaway cultist, and a mystic drunken lecher—all searching for the key to reclaiming humanity’s past—and future. Download or read book The Color of Civics written by Matthew D. Nelsen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores how to forge more empowering and equitable spaces for civic learning by centering the agency and lived experiences of marginalized groups. It reimagines the role of education in preparing all kids for democratic participation, highlights a crucial point of political socialization, and provides actionable advice for policymakers hoping to equalize democratic opportunities for young people in the United States. The book makes four primary claims. First, it argues that traditional civic education courses have not lived up to their promise to foster democratic capacity, especially for marginalized students. In response, it presents a new approach to civic education that aims to foster political empowerment by centering critical categories of knowledge-those that highlight the agency and grassroots political action of marginalized groups- and historically grounded conversations about current events. Second, it demonstrates that such an approach to civic education increases rates of intended political participation among young people of color and heightens political empathy among white youth. Third, it highlights the agency of teachers in processes of socialization, exploring how their attitudes and lived experiences drive the creation and implementation of more empowering civic learning environments. Fourth, it argues that teachers and students-those who spend the most time in social studies classrooms-should drive initiatives to revitalize civic education. These insights should inform the work of policymakers looking to make civic education more empowering for young people throughout the United States"--

Download or read book Assimilating Asians written by Patricia P. Chu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2000-03-29 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the central tasks of Asian American literature, argues Patricia P. Chu, has been to construct Asian American identities in the face of existing, and often contradictory, ideas about what it means to be an American. Chu examines the model of the Anglo-American bildungsroman and shows how Asian American writers have adapted it to express their troubled and unstable position in the United States. By aligning themselves with U.S. democratic ideals while also questioning the historical realities of exclusion, internment, and discrimination, Asian American authors, contends Chu, do two kinds of ideological work: they claim Americanness for Asian Americans, and they create accounts of Asian ethnicity that deploy their specific cultures and histories to challenge established notions of Americanness. Chu further demonstrates that Asian American male and female writers engage different strategies in the struggle to adapt, reflecting their particular, gender-based relationships to immigration, work, and cultural representation. While offering fresh perspectives on the well-known writings—both fiction and memoir—of Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, Bharati Mukherjee, Frank Chin, and David Mura, Assimilating Asians also provides new insight into the work of less recognized but nevertheless important writers like Carlos Bulosan, Edith Eaton, Younghill Kang, Milton Murayama, and John Okada. As she explores this expansive range of texts—published over the course of the last century by authors of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, and Indian origin or descent—Chu is able to illuminate her argument by linking it to key historical and cultural events. Assimilating Asians makes an important contribution to the fields of Asian American, American, and women’s studies. Scholars of Asian American literature and culture, as well as of ethnicity and assimilation, will find particular interest and value in this book.

Download or read book Rites of Passage in Postcolonial Women s Writing written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings a variety of new approaches and contexts to modern and contemporary women’s writing. Contributors include both new and well-established scholars from Europe, Australia, the USA, and the Caribbean. Their essays draw on, adapt, and challenge anthropological perspectives on rites of passage derived from the work of Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner. Collectively, the essays suggest that women’s writing and women’s experiences from diverse cultures go beyond any straightforward notion of a threefold structure of separation, transition, and incorporation. Some essays include discussion of traditional rites of passage such as birth, motherhood, marriage, death, and bereavement; others are interested in exploring less traditional, more fluid, and/or problematic rites such as abortion, living with HIV/AIDS, and coming into political consciousness. Contributors seek ways of linking writing on rites of passage to feminist, postcolonial, and psychoanalytic theories which foreground margins, borders, and the outsider. The three opening essays explore the work of the Zimbabwean writer Yvonne Vera, whose groundbreaking work explored taboo subjects such as infanticide and incest. A wide range of other essays focus on writers from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe, including Jean Rhys, Bharati Mukherjee, Arundhati Roy, Jean Arasanayagam, Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl, and Eva Sallis. Rites of Passage in Postcolonial Women’s Writing will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of postcolonial and modern and contemporary women’s writing, and to students on literature and women’s studies courses who want to study women’s writing from a cross-cultural perspective and from different theoretical positions. Contributors: Lizzy Attree, Lopamudra Basu, Katrin Berndt, Gay Breyley, Helen Cousins, Tanya Dalziell, Alexandra Dumitrescu, Anna Gething, Jessica Gildersleeve, Sharanya Jayawickrama, Kimberley M. Jew, Polina Mackay, Alexandra W. Schultheis, Rachel Slater, Irene Visser.

Download or read book Race Community and Urban Schools written by Stuart Greene and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2015-04-26 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important book, award-winning author Stuart Greene enters the ongoing conversation about low-income African American families and their role in helping their children flourish. Greene focuses on parents’ self-defined roles within the context of race, urban development, and an economy that has created opportunity for some and displaced others. Moving beyond analysis to action, the author describes a partnering strategy to help educators understand the lived experiences of children and families and to use their funds of knowledge as resources for teaching. This book combines critical race theory, critical geography, first-hand accounts, and research on literacy practices at home to provide a powerful tool that will help teachers and administrators see families in new ways. Book Features: Describes a partnering model that encourages educators to consider the social, cultural, racial, and economic factors that shape parent engagement with schools.Identifies important areas of misunderstanding between African American parents and their children’s teachers.Incorporates personal narratives of children whose voices are rarely part of research on parent involvement. “Race, Community, and Urban Schools will make a difference in the lives of teachers and administrators. As you read this book, you may find yourself moved, intrigued, or saddened by some of the examples Stuart Greene provides. And throughout, you will find yourself rethinking, reprocessing, and recreating some of your most cherished ideas or preconceived notions about African American families.” —From the Foreword by Patricia Edwards, Michigan State University “This powerful—and hopeful—book challenges dominant portrayals of African American parent disengagement in their children’s education and exposes relations of race, power, and urban restructuring that exclude low-income parents of color. Through counterstories of parents’ deep commitment to their children’s education, Stuart Greene opens a space for us to think differently about creating democratic family-school partnerships.” —Pauline Lipman, professor, University of Illinois at Chicago
