Book Concrete Segmental Bridges

Download or read book Concrete Segmental Bridges written by Dongzhou Huang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-01-11 with total page 926 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Segmental concrete bridges have become one of the main options for major transportation projects world-wide. They offer expedited construction with minimal traffic disruption, lower life cycle costs, appealing aesthetics and adaptability to a curved roadway alignment. The literature is focused on construction, so this fills the need for a design-oriented book for less experienced bridge engineers and for senior university students. It presents comprehensive theory, design and key construction methods, with a simple design example based on the AASHTO LRFD Design Specifications for each of the main bridge types. It outlines design techniques and relationships between analytical methods, specifications, theory, design, construction and practice. It combines mathematics and engineering mechanics with the authors’ design and teaching experience.

Book Recommendations for the Analysis of Contact Stresses for Launched Plate Girder

Download or read book Recommendations for the Analysis of Contact Stresses for Launched Plate Girder written by Byungik Chang and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incremental launching method (ILM) is one of the newest methods being considered in bridge construction in recent years. Incremental launching is accomplished by assembling segments of the girders behind an abutment, joining them together, and pulling the assembled segments on support bearings to their permanent position. During bridge launching, high-contact stresses can be developed between the launching system and the girders. The solutions of contact stress problems are not typically possible with closed-form solutions because of the complicated geometries, loadings, and material properties. This thesis discusses the design recommendations for the nonlinear finite element modeling of contact problem. In Chapter 2, a number of pertinent articles were presented in three sections: incrementally launched bridges, finite element methods for contact problems, and mesh generation in finite element analysis. Chapter 3 illustrates the general Iowa River Bridge (IRB) launch description and the experimental field data that were collected during the third launch of the westbound roadway. For the IRB, the girder flange was in contact with the roller surface and some of the measured strains during launching exceeded the material yield strain. These behaviors required that both contact and material nonlinearities be considered for the contact-stress analysis of the IRB. The nonlinear finite element modeling is presented in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 details a comparison between contact strains predicted from ANSYS nonlinear finite element modeling and those strains measured experimentally during field testing.

Book Guidance for Good Bridge Design

Download or read book Guidance for Good Bridge Design written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressed to designers and even more so to owners and project managers, this part is meant as a guide to an efficient selection of designers and contractors, and to the preparation of fair contracts providing high quality at reasonable cost. Clearly, a good design must be paid for at its real cost; economising on the design cost can be extremely counterproductive for the owner when considering the final whole-life cost of the project. In addition, it was considered very important to address the designer’s responsibilities and relations with other participants in large projects, and finally design philosophy itself. Part 2 – Design and construction aspects This more technical part is mainly addressed to bridge designers and devoted to a systematic analysis of structural and constructional bridge concepts. Considering the importance of erection techniques in the development of bridge design, this second part of the guide starts by a description of the different construction methods, their advantages and draw-backs, their particularities and, of course, by defining the domain of their most efficient applications. Another main chapter is devoted to the proper design of cross-sections. And finally, a third main chapter deals in detail with the influence of construction techniques on design.

Book The First Incrementally Launched Bridges in Hong Kong

Download or read book The First Incrementally Launched Bridges in Hong Kong written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hong kong government invested hk$1760 million to build a 24 km trunk road with a dual 3-lane carriageway from sha tin to fanling in the eastern new territories. the 2.9 km tai po bypass section required the construction of four viaducts ranging from 16 to 242 m long with columns up to 30 m high. the original design of these bridges adopted precast prestressed concrete beam construction. an alternative design was proposed using the incremental launching method, which would result in a saving of hk$10 million in contract costs. the incremental launching method used for the tai po bridges is described in detail in this paper, including design considerations, construction procedures and problems encountered. with the efforts of engineers from four continents, the project was completed ahead of schedule, and the road system was opened to traffic in september 1985.
