Book Economic and Financial Sustainability of Private Agricultural Extension in El Salvador

Download or read book Economic and Financial Sustainability of Private Agricultural Extension in El Salvador written by Daniel Solis and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the 1980s, El Salvador has shown a dramatic decline in the public funding for agricultural extension. This process follows a worldwide tendency to reduce the public sector involvement in agriculture. To respond to the reduction in public expenditure in extension programs, a privatization process has been proposed as a feasible alternative for agricultural development. The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the sustainability of the Farm Management Center (FMC) model as a specific private agricultural extension option in El Salvador. To pursue this objective, an ex ante economic and financial cost-benefit analysis based on a multiperiod linear programming model is performed. The general results of this study suggest that a combination of better farm prices (paid and received), reallocation of resources, and crop diversification, which would be promoted by an FMC, can lead to an increase in farm level profits that is sufficient to cover the operation of a private farm management center while also generating net gains in household income. It is important to point out that public support is crucial as an initial injection to get the FMCs started. Moreover, this public support could help to break the inertia typically shown by peasant farmers to get involved in new endeavors.

Book The Impact of Soil Conservation and Output Diversification on Farm Income in Central American Hillside Farming

Download or read book The Impact of Soil Conservation and Output Diversification on Farm Income in Central American Hillside Farming written by Boris E. Bravo-Ureta and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the determinants of farm income among hillside farmers participating in natural resource management projects in El Salvador and Honduras. The farm income function was evaluated using a system of equations in which income is determined simultaneously by the farmer's decision to adopt soil conservation technologies and by the level of diversification (number of agricultural activities) on the farm. The database used comes from surveys administered to 678 beneficiaries of these projects during 2002. The econometric results suggest that all the variables related directly to land use (i.e., output diversification, soil conservation practices and structures, and the adoption of forestry systems) have a positive and statistically significant association with farm income. Also, farmers who own land enjoy higher farm incomes than those who do not. The results indicate that when investing in natural resource management projects, governments and multilateral development agencies should pay close attention to output diversification, land tenure, and human capital formation as effective instruments in increasing farm income.

This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper assesses the potential output in El Salvador. Based on various filters and the production function approach, El Salvador’s potential growth is estimated at about 2 percent for 1999–2015, and the output gap is now virtually closed. Potential growth after the global financial crisis has fallen as a result of lower capital accumulation and total factor productivity (TFP). TFP growth depends on technological progress, as well as the institutional, regulatory, and legal environment in which businesses operate. From a cyclical perspective, the economy is assessed to be operating at potential and labor market conditions also appear to be broadly neutral. Strengthening capital and TFP growth going forward is critical to achieve the authorities’ goal of raising potential growth to 3 percent over the medium term. Structural reforms should prioritize mobilizing domestic savings to invest and build a higher capital stock, enhancing research and development/technological diffusion and competition in product and labor markets, strengthening institutions to secure property rights and reduce red tape, improving infrastructure, facilitating access to financing, and fostering human capital to boost TFP growth. Going forward, it is critical to undertake structural reforms to strengthen capital and TFP to raise potential growth.

Book El Salvador Rural Development Study

Download or read book El Salvador Rural Development Study written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although El Salvador has recorded impressive overall economic growth in the 1990s, during this period, agricultural growth has lagged considerably below the rest of the economy, which raises concerns about the long-run capacity of the sector to raise incomes and employment in rural areas and contribute to overall growth. The main objectives of this sector review are twofold: to develop a strategy to revitalize the agricultural sector and realize its full potential for efficient and sustainable growth by enhancing competitiveness; and to present the main findings of the analysis of rural poverty and develop its implications for the design of a strategy for poverty alleviation.
