Book Increased Confidence in Concept Design Through Trade Space Exploration and Multiobjective Optimization

Download or read book Increased Confidence in Concept Design Through Trade Space Exploration and Multiobjective Optimization written by Ryan Glenn Odegard and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing size, complexity and demands of engineering systems requires paying greater attention to the initial design of the system concept. To improve the process by which concept design is carried out, this thesis develops an Engineering Framework for Concept Development. The Engineering Framework is applicable to a diverse range of concept design problems. It helps guide the otherwise haphazard process of the early stages of design to provide confidence that the chosen concept is superior to a large set of alternatives. Accompanying the Engineering Framework is a collection of tools which aid the designer in analyzing different options. Two tools in particular are demonstrated for their mutually beneficial characteristics: 1) Object-Process Network is used to explore the full space of options, revealing the relationships among design decisions and system performance, and 2) a particle.swarm optimization algorithm is implemented to efficiently search through the design space. The use of such an optimization algorithm becomes especially advantageous when higher fidelity models are included in the analysis because it is able to quickly identify the most favorable families of designs. The complementary approaches of exploring the entire trade space and then efficiently searching for the best groups of designs are shown to provide valuable insights in concept design problems. Two case study examples are presented as applications of the Engineering Framework and design tools. The first is an air-launched sounding rocket propulsion system design. The second is the design of a responsive disaster monitoring system. In each case, the use of the Engineering Framework and concept design tools give the designer increased confidence that quality concept designs have been identified.

Book Functional Thinking for Value Creation

Download or read book Functional Thinking for Value Creation written by Jürgen Hesselbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-18 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the IPS2 conferences in Cranfield and Linköping in 2009 and 2010 the 3rd CIRP International Conference on Industrial Product Service Systems (IPS2) 2011 takes place in Braunschweig, Germany. IPS2 itself is defined as “an integrated industrial product and service offering that delivers value in use”. The customers expect comprehensive solutions, which are adapted to their individual needs. IPS2 offers the possibility to stand out from competition and for long-term customer loyalty. Particularly in times of economic crisis it becomes apparent which producing companies understand to satisfy the needs and requirements of their customers. Especially in this relatively new domain IPS2 it will be important to keep track of the whole context and to seek cooperation with other research fields and disciplines. The 3rd CIRP International Conference on Industrial Product Service Systems (IPS2) 2011 serves as a platform for such collaborations and the discussion of new scientific ideas.

Book A Method for Exploring Optimization Formulation Space in Conceptual Design

Download or read book A Method for Exploring Optimization Formulation Space in Conceptual Design written by Shane K. Curtis and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formulation space exploration is a new strategy for multiobjective optimization that facilitates both divergent searching and convergent optimization during the early stages of design. The formulation space is the union of all variable and design objective spaces identified by the designer as being valid and pragmatic problem formulations. By extending a computational search into the formulation space, the solution to an optimization problem is no longer predefined by any single problem formulation, as it is with traditional optimization methods. Instead, a designer is free to change, modify, and update design objectives, variables, and constraints and explore design alternatives without requiring a concrete understanding of the design problem a priori. To facilitate this process, a new vector/matrix-based definition for multiobjective optimization problems is introduced, which is dynamic in nature and easily modified. Additionally, a set of exploration metrics is developed to help guide designers while exploring the formulation space. Finally, several examples are presented to illustrate the use of this new, dynamic approach to multiobjective optimization.

Book Quantifying Flexibility in the Operationally Responsive Space Paradigm

Download or read book Quantifying Flexibility in the Operationally Responsive Space Paradigm written by Lauren Viscito and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing complex space systems that will deliver value in the presence of an uncertain future is difficult. As space system lifetimes are now measured in decades, the systems face increased risk from uncertain future contexts. Tradespace exploration increases the designer's system knowledge during conceptual design and with dynamic analysis can predict the system's behavior in many possible future contexts. Designing flexible systems will allow mitigation of risk from uncertain future contexts and the opportunity to deliver more value than anticipated by the designers. Flexibility is a dynamic property of a system that allows it to take advantage of emergent opportunity and to mitigate risk by enabling the system to respond to changing contexts in order to retain or increase usefulness to system stakeholders over time. Identifying flexible designs has traditionally been accomplished through subjective or heuristic methods, leading to a qualitative assessment of system flexibility. Objective and quantitative measures of flexibility are required for analysis of flexibility in tradespace exploration, as the number of designs is often too large for traditional qualitative approaches. Value Weighted Filtered Outdegree is introduced as a metric for identifying valuably flexible systems in tradespace studies in order to improve decision making during the conceptual design phase. Dynamic Multi-Attribute Tradespace Exploration (Dynamic MATE) is used as the basic tradespace exploration method for Value Weighted Filtered Outdegree. Dynamic MATE applies decision theory to computer simulation of thousands of system designs, across hundreds of unique future contexts. Epoch-Era Analysis is used to parameterize future contexts for dynamic analysis of the designs' performance. Although dominated in static analysis, flexible designs are valuable in the presence of changing contexts. The usefulness of Value Weighted Filtered Outdegree is established through application to the design of a satellite radar system. The metric was able to identify designs that are valuably flexible, and exclude designs that carry change capability that does not add value to the design across selected epochs. Showing another application of Value Weighted Filtered Outdegree, a comparison of flexibility for an Operationally Responsive Space architecture is conducted which highlights the advantages of a modular architecture in the presence of changing user requirements.

Book A Trade Space Model for Robotic Lunar Exploration

Download or read book A Trade Space Model for Robotic Lunar Exploration written by Zachary James Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in the moon as a target for planetary exploration. In light of the growing interest in the robotic exploration of the moon, this thesis presents a quantitative methodology for exploring the trade space of potential in situ robotic lunar spacecraft designs. A science value model was developed, using Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT), to estimate the effectiveness of a spacecraft design towards assessing a set of specified science objectives. An engineering model was developed to estimate the masses of spacecraft designs within the trade space. These models were integrated together to explore the objectives of minimizing mass and maximizing science return. Two methods for exploration of the trade space were presented: a stochastic design space search method, and a multi-objective simulated annealing method. Using these techniques, the optimality of a reference mission was investigated, and ways to improve science utility performance were shown. The exploration of a trade space under uncertainty, using an -Pareto search method, was investigated, and recommendations for designers were presented.
