Book The Highway Capacity Manual A Conceptual and Research History Volume 2

Download or read book The Highway Capacity Manual A Conceptual and Research History Volume 2 written by Elena S. Prassas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1950, the Highway Capacity Manual has been a standard used in the planning, design, analysis, and operation of virtually any highway traffic facility in the United States. It has also been widely used around the globe and has inspired the development of similar manuals in other countries. This book is Volume II of a series on the conceptual and research origins of the methodologies found in the Highway Capacity Manual. It focuses on the most complex points in a traffic system: signalized and unsignalized intersections, and the concepts and methodologies developed over the years to model their operations. It also includes an overview of the fundamental concepts of capacity and level of service, particularly as applied to intersections. The historical roots of the manual and its contents are important to understanding current methodologies, and improving them in the future. As such, this book is a valuable resource for current and future users of the Highway Capacity Manual, as well as researchers and developers involved in advancing the state-of-the-art in the field.

Book Applying Analysis Tools in Planning for Operations

Download or read book Applying Analysis Tools in Planning for Operations written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "More and more, transportation system operators are seeing the benefi ts of strengthening links between planning and operations. A critical element in improving transportation decision-making and the effectiveness of transportation systems related to operations and planning is through the use of analysis tools and methods. This brochure is one in a series of fi ve intended to improve the way existing analysis tools are used to advance operational strategies in the planning process. The specifi c objective of developing this informational brochure series was to provide reference and resource materials that will help planners and operations professionals to use existing transportation planning and operations analysis tools and methods in a more systematic way to better analyze, evaluate, and report the benefi ts of needed investments in transportation operations. This particular case study focused on using Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) procedures in long-range transportation planning for arterial signalization strategies. To better estimate link capacity, this case study developed an automated methodology to 1) transfer demand volumes from a regional model to software implementing the HCM Urban Streets procedure, 2) combine the volumes with known traffi c signal timings to calculate a link-specifi c capacity, and 3) transfer that capacity back to the regional model for the next iteration. In addition, operational treatments that can infl uence capacity can be accounted for in the HCM-implementing software, thus allowing the effects of these treatments to be refl ected in the regional model output"--Technical report documentation page.

Book Planning and Preliminary Engineering Applications Guide to the Highway Capacity Manual

Download or read book Planning and Preliminary Engineering Applications Guide to the Highway Capacity Manual written by Richard Gerhard Dowling and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 825: Planning and Preliminary Engineering Applications Guide to the Highway Capacity Manual will help planners apply the methodologies of the 6th Edition of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) to common planning and preliminary engineering analyses, including scenario planning and system performance monitoring. It shows how the HCM can interact with travel demand forecasting, mobile source emission, and simulation models and its application to multimodal analyses and oversaturated conditions. Three case studies (freeway master plan, arterial bus rapid transit analysis, and long range transportation plan analysis) illustrate the techniques presented in the guide. In addition to providing a cost-effective and reliable approach to analysis, the guide provides a practical introduction to the detailed methodologies of the HCM." -- Publisher's description

Book Highway Capacity Analysis Hcm and Hcs

Download or read book Highway Capacity Analysis Hcm and Hcs written by William M. Sampson and published by . This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway Capacity Analysis provides students with foundational principles, concepts, and theory regarding capacity analysis to prepare them for work as an operational traffic engineer. Students learn how the mastery of capacity analysis applies to signal operations and optimization, roadway and intersection design, transportation planning, and traffic impact analysis. The text also prepares students to use the necessary software employed within the traffic engineering profession. The text is divided into three sections: Uninterrupted Flow, Interrupted Flow, and Application Extensions. In Part I, students learn how to analyze uninterrupted flow segments and facilities, including freeways and highways. Part II discusses the analysis of stop control, roundabouts, signalized intersections, urban streets, interchanges, and alternative intersections, with multimodal analysis and travel time reliability included where applicable. Part III extends the procedural analyses outlined in Parts I and II into broader applications, including signal timing optimization and traffic impact studies. Students follow step-by-step procedures to work through exercises by hand, then code them into software to experience their learnings in practice. Providing a practical, succinct, and logical approach to traffic engineering processes and procedures, Highway Capacity Analysis prepares students to enter the traffic engineering profession with the knowhow and practical experience required to succeed. The text is well suited to courses in traffic engineering and transportation. William M. Sampson is a licensed professional engineer with 40 years of experience in the traffic engineering profession. He's served on the Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee and has distinct expertise in capacity analysis and signal timing. He is the director of the McTrans Center and a transportation engineering lecturer at the University of Florida.

Book The Highway Capacity Manual A Conceptual and Research History

Download or read book The Highway Capacity Manual A Conceptual and Research History written by Roger . P Roess and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1950, the Highway Capacity Manual has been a standard used in the planning, design, analysis, and operation of virtually any highway traffic facility in the United States. It has also been widely used abroad, and has spurred the development of similar manuals in other countries. The twin concepts of capacity and level of service have been developed in the manual, and methodologies have been presented that allow highway traffic facilities to be designed on a common basis, and allow for the analysis of operational quality under various traffic demand scenarios. The manual also addresses related pedestrian, bicycle, and transit issues. This book details the fundamental development of the concepts of capacity and level of service, and of the specific methodologies developed to describe them over a wide range of facility types. The book is comprised of two volumes. Volume 1 (this book) focuses on the development of basic principles, and their application to uninterrupted flow facilities: freeways, multilane highways, and two-lane highways. Weaving, merging, and diverging segments on freeways and multilane highways are also discussed in detail. Volume 2 focuses on interrupted flow facilities: signalized and unsignalized intersections, urban streets and arterials. It is intended to help users of the manual understand how concepts, approaches, and specific methodologies were developed, and to understand the underlying principles that each embodies. It is also intended to act as a basic reference for current and future researchers who will continue to develop new and improved capacity analysis methodologies for many years to come.
