Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2020 PULITZER PRIZE FOR POETRY Finalist for the 2019 National Book Award "100 Notable Books of the Year," The New York Times Book Review One Book, One Philadelphia Citywide Reading Program Selection, 2021 "By some literary magic—no, it's precision, and honesty—Brown manages to bestow upon even the most public of subjects the most intimate and personal stakes."—Craig Morgan Teicher, “'I Reject Walls': A 2019 Poetry Preview” for NPR “A relentless dismantling of identity, a difficult jewel of a poem.“—Rita Dove, in her introduction to Jericho Brown’s “Dark” (featured in the New York Times Magazine in January 2019) “Winner of a Whiting Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship, Brown's hard-won lyricism finds fire (and idyll) in the intersection of politics and love for queer Black men.”—O, The Oprah Magazine Named a Lit Hub “Most Anticipated Book of 2019” One of Buzzfeed’s “66 Books Coming in 2019 You’ll Want to Keep Your Eyes On” The Rumpus poetry pick for “What to Read When 2019 is Just Around the Corner” One of BookRiot’s “50 Must-Read Poetry Collections of 2019” Jericho Brown’s daring new book The Tradition details the normalization of evil and its history at the intersection of the past and the personal. Brown’s poetic concerns are both broad and intimate, and at their very core a distillation of the incredibly human: What is safety? Who is this nation? Where does freedom truly lie? Brown makes mythical pastorals to question the terrors to which we’ve become accustomed, and to celebrate how we survive. Poems of fatherhood, legacy, blackness, queerness, worship, and trauma are propelled into stunning clarity by Brown’s mastery, and his invention of the duplex—a combination of the sonnet, the ghazal, and the blues—is testament to his formal skill. The Tradition is a cutting and necessary collection, relentless in its quest for survival while reveling in a celebration of contradiction.

Book Tax dollar Super Sonnet

Download or read book Tax dollar Super Sonnet written by Nicole Mauro and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Features one giant 'super' sonnet composed of text from various presidential speeches (Obama to Washington), and prose poems using Sarah Palin's autobiography, Going Rogue, and Emily Dickinson's Books. "A procedural-marvel. I find myself wondering on active generations of lyric from within a source text (is that akin to the functionality of Rorschach (embedded-ness of underlying lyric?)). In other words, if we extract (as an activism) are we composers? Are we stewards ('servant's' 'heart') of meaning? A poet is a self-made visionary. Can someone surrogate (yes, as a verb) me (us) a position in vision ('it is true' 'I' 'can')? I think that more than anything else Mauro has offered us a way to enter 'imagined' ] 'freedom: ' 'the' 'promulgation.' We need hearth-like replacements of 'counterfeit' 'countenance;' we need to feel our own agency as we are being enfolded in a slurping and slobbering (lovely) story line as it is being unfolded. What a relief to be confounded and found here Sarah Palin's voice is blasting through an overhead speaker while Mauro wears a mask of Emily Dickinson's face, her three fingers on right hand tucked into middle of palm with her pointer finger and thumb extended ('I am the new Emily Dickinson with a gun'). Mauro moves the mouth of the mask." j/j hastain"

Book Sleeping with the Dictionary

  • Author : Harryette Mullen
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2002-02-22
  • ISBN : 0520927834
  • Pages : 99 pages

Download or read book Sleeping with the Dictionary written by Harryette Mullen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-02-22 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harryette Mullen's fifth poetry collection, Sleeping with the Dictionary, is the abecedarian offspring of her collaboration with two of the poet's most seductive writing partners, Roget's Thesaurus and The American Heritage Dictionary. In her ménage à trois with these faithful companions, the poet is aware that while Roget seems obsessed with categories and hierarchies, the American Heritage, whatever its faults, was compiled with the assistance of a democratic usage panel that included black poets Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps, as well as feminist author and editor Gloria Steinem. With its arbitrary yet determinant alphabetical arrangement, its gleeful pursuit of the ludic pleasure of word games (acrostic, anagram, homophone, parody, pun), as well as its reflections on the politics of language and dialect, Mullen's work is serious play. A number of the poems are inspired or influenced by a technique of the international literary avant-garde group Oulipo, a dictionary game called S+7 or N+7. This method of textual transformation--which is used to compose nonsensical travesties reminiscent of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky"--also creates a kind of automatic poetic discourse. Mullen's parodies reconceive the African American's relation to the English language and Anglophone writing, through textual reproduction, recombining the genetic structure of texts from the Shakespearean sonnet and the fairy tale to airline safety instructions and unsolicited mail. The poet admits to being "licked all over by the English tongue," and the title of this book may remind readers that an intimate partner who also gives language lessons is called, euphemistically, a "pillow dictionary."

Book The Fat Sonnets

    Book Details:
  • Author : Samantha Zighelboim
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 9781938247309
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Fat Sonnets written by Samantha Zighelboim and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Women's Studies. Samantha Zighelboim's debut collection conducts a radical re-examination of what we mean by body. In these poems, body is noun, verb and adverb; body is dearly beloved and fiercely rejected; it is by turns a singularly beautiful process and a frightening object. Zighelboim takes the sonnet form as a loose premise, a la Bernadette Mayer, but then explodes, expands, defies and otherwise grows out of supposed formal limits, making language into a living embodiment of the refusal of (institutional, patriarchal, cultural) control. The poet's refusal of the social invisibility of fat bodies is essential. "I am a perfect fucking blossom," Zighelboim writes, and also "I am entitled to the loneliness of my interminable appetite." Offering felt registers as subtle as "The oblique / correspondence between / a soft body / and a thin / layer of / pulp," this is the writing of a sharp and observant world-eater: a cosmophage in the truest sense.

Book The Penguin Book of the Sonnet

Download or read book The Penguin Book of the Sonnet written by Various and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique anthology celebrating that most vigorous of literary forms--the sonnet The sonnet is one of the oldest and most enduring literary forms of the post-classical world, a meeting place of image and voice, passion and reason, elegy and ode. It is a form that both challenges and liberates the poet. For this anthology, poet and scholar Phillis Levin has gathered more than 600 sonnets to tell the full story of the sonnet tradition in the English language. She begins with its Italian origins; takes the reader through its multifaceted development from the Elizabethan era to the Romantic and Victorian; demonstrates its popularity as a vehicle of protest among writers of the Harlem Renaissance and poets who served in the First World War; and explores its revival among modern and contemporary poets. In her vibrant introduction, Levin traces this history, discussing characteristic structures and shifting themes and providing illuminating readings of individual sonnets. She includes an appendix on structure, biographical notes, and valuable explanatory notes and indexes. And, through her narrative and wide-ranging selection of sonnets and sonnet sequences, she portrays not only the evolution of the form over half a millennium but also its dynamic possibilities.
