Book Obtaining a Bachelor s Degree from a Community College

Download or read book Obtaining a Bachelor s Degree from a Community College written by Marc Frenette and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Traditionally, four-year bachelor’s degree programs have been available only at universities. More recently, they have been offered at some community colleges - particularly in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Using linked administrative postsecondary graduate and personal income tax data, this study finds that college bachelor’s degree (CBD) holders earn about 12% more per year, on average, than university bachelor’s degree (UBD) holders two years after graduation. Almost all of this gap can be explained by the different field of study choices made by the two groups of students. Compared with their university counterparts, CBD holders were more likely to take programs in business, management and public administration or health and related fields (fields generally associated with higher-than-average earnings), and less likely to take education, humanities or social and behavioural sciences and non-professional law programs (fields generally associated with lower-than-average earnings). The remainder of the earnings gap could be explained by the fact that CBD holders were more than two years older than UBD holders, on average. The study also showed that UBD holders registered faster earnings growth between two and five years after graduation and were more likely to enroll in graduate studies than their counterparts from colleges. Moreover, CBD programs were generally concentrated in colleges that were situated near a university and associated with above-average earnings (compared with other colleges) among their diploma holders'--Abstract, page 5.

Book Postsecondary Education in British Columbia

Download or read book Postsecondary Education in British Columbia written by Robert Cowin and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical literature about postsecondary education in British Columbia, as in many jurisdictions, is fragmented, paying unequal attention to public colleges and universities, vocational colleges, apprenticeship, continuing education, and private institutions. Robert Cowin synthesizes these pieces, providing a comprehensive overview of the emergence and evolution of the provincial postsecondary system. He then defines three distinct theoretical lenses – social justice, human capital formation, and marketization – and applies each in turn to an analysis of five significant transitions. This dynamic systems approach, in which Cowin examines interactions across sectors, allows him to delineate the cumulative and complementary ways in which sectors have affected one another. Postsecondary Education in British Columbia provides a thoughtful critical analysis of the role of social justice, human capital, and the market in the development of the institutional arrangements – the distribution of institutions by size, mission, type, and location – and policies that have shaped contemporary education in the province.

Book Radical Possibilities

Download or read book Radical Possibilities written by Jean Anyon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Anyon's groundbreaking new book reveals the influence of federal and metropolitan policies and practices on the poverty that plagues schools and communities in American cities and segregated, low-income suburbs. Public policies...such as those regulating the minimum wage, job availability, tax rates, federal transit, and affordable housing...all create conditions in urban areas that no education policy as currently conceived can transcend. In this first book since her best-selling Ghetto Schooling, Jean Anyon argues that we must replace these federal and metro-area policies with more equitable ones so that urban school reform can have positive life consequences for students. Anyon provides a much-needed new paradigm for understanding and combating educational injustice. Radical Possibilities reminds us that historically, equitable public policies have been typically created as a result of the political pressure brought to bear by social movements. Basing her analysis on new research in civil rights history and social movement theory, Anyon skillfully explains how the current moment offers serious possibilities for the creation of such a force. The book powerfully describes five social movements already under way in U.S. cities, and offers readers interested in building this new social movement a set of practical and theoretical insights into securing economic and educational justice for the many millions of America's poor families and students.

Book A Theory of Insurance and Gambling

Download or read book A Theory of Insurance and Gambling written by John A. Nyman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book holds that the demand for insurance is best understood, not by focusing on risk preferences, but by focusing on the additional income, the states of the world that trigger the income transfer from the insurer, and the value of income (and consumption) in those states. It is unlikely that demand can be understood if the analyst limits the gain from insurance to coverage of the uninsured loss alone. It is also unlikely that the demand can be understood if the analyst limits the analysis to a movement along a static "risk averse" utility or value function, rather than acknowledging that a shift of this function, and thus in the utility or value of additional income, often coincides with the occurrence of the event that triggers the payout"--
