Book Family Finances microform a Sociological Study of the Earning Managing and Spending of Money in Marital Relationships

Download or read book Family Finances microform a Sociological Study of the Earning Managing and Spending of Money in Marital Relationships written by Colavecchia, Sandra and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study investigates the organization of family finances among a sample of married Canadian couples in order to explore the connections between money, power, and gender in marriage. Various aspects of family finances are investigated including earning, banking, the management of money, and spending. In-depth interviews were used to examine economic inequalities in marriage and the social meanings surrounding money. Consistent with grounded theory (Glaser and Strauss, 1967), the findings of the study draw attention to a type of domestic labour that has been largely overlooked in studies of household labour. The study explores the social processes whereby economic inequalities are produced in marital relationships and how the social meanings of money shape money relations in marriage. The relationship between women's economic resources and marital power dynamics are also examined. Directions for future research and implications for social policy in relation to various social and economic policies affecting families are addressed. The study draws on sociological and economic scholarship on money in marriage, specifically previous research on economic inequality in families. The analytical framework of the study incorporates several different theoretical perspectives, including sociological perspectives on the social meanings of money in intimate relationships, and Zelizer's (1989) concept of "special movies". The study also draws on sociological perspectives on gender and marriage, including Komter's (1989) theory of hidden power, and West and Zimmerman's (1987) conceptualization of "doing gender."

Book A Theory Of The Consumption Function

Download or read book A Theory Of The Consumption Function written by Milton Friedman and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the exact nature of the consumption function? Can this term be defined so that it will be consistent with empirical evidence and a valid instrument in the hands of future economic researchers and policy makers? In this volume a distinguished American economist presents a new theory of the consumption function, tests it against extensive statistical J material and suggests some of its significant implications. Central to the new theory is its sharp distinction between two concepts of income, measured income, or that which is recorded for a particular period, and permanent income, a longer-period concept in terms of which consumers decide how much to spend and how much to save. Milton Friedman suggests that the total amount spent on consumption is on the average the same fraction of permanent income, regardless of the size of permanent income. The magnitude of the fraction depends on variables such as interest rate, degree of uncertainty relating to occupation, ratio of wealth to income, family size, and so on. The hypothesis is shown to be consistent with budget studies and time series data, and some of its far-reaching implications are explored in the final chapter. "...the most influential economist of the second half of the 20th century...possibly of all of it.”—The Economist "Friedman argued that the best way to make sense of saving and spending was not, as Keynes had done, to resort to loose psychological theorizing, but rather to think of individuals as making rational plans about how to spend their wealth over their lifetimes...The details are a bit technical, but Friedman’s ‘permanent income hypothesis’ and the Ando-Modigliani ‘life cycle model’ resolved several apparent paradoxes about the relationship between income and spending, and remain the foundations of how economists think about spending and saving to this day."—Paul Krugman, New York Times

The Encyclopedia of Human Relationships offers an interdisciplinary view of all types of human associations—friends, lovers, spouses, roommates, coworkers, teammates, parents and children, cousins, siblings, acquaintances, neighbors, business associates, and so forth. Book Economic Policy and the Division of Income Within the Family

Download or read book Economic Policy and the Division of Income Within the Family written by Stephen Smith and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes the way in which economic policy should take account of the economic relationships and interactions between family members. Beginning by describing the theoretical and empirical analysis of the relationship between individuals and the family unit, it then goes on to consider the implications of different assumptions about household behaviour for the design of policy in five areas - social security policy, income tax, the Community Charge, financial support for students in post compulsory education and pensions policy. In each area, the IFS researchers consider what assumptions regarding the division of responsibility between the state and the family underlie current policy, and what the implications and effects of alternative approaches would be.
