Book Algorithm Engineering

Download or read book Algorithm Engineering written by Lasse Kliemann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithm Engineering is a methodology for algorithmic research that combines theory with implementation and experimentation in order to obtain better algorithms with high practical impact. Traditionally, the study of algorithms was dominated by mathematical (worst-case) analysis. In Algorithm Engineering, algorithms are also implemented and experiments conducted in a systematic way, sometimes resembling the experimentation processes known from fields such as biology, chemistry, or physics. This helps in counteracting an otherwise growing gap between theory and practice.

Book Advanced Tools and Methods for Treewidth Based Problem Solving

Download or read book Advanced Tools and Methods for Treewidth Based Problem Solving written by M. Hecher and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Advanced Tools and Methods for Treewidth-Based Problem Solving, contains selected results from the author’s PhD studies, which were carried out from 2015 to 2021. For his PhD thesis, Markus Hecher received the EurAI Dissertation Award 2021 and the GI Dissertation Award 2021, amongst others. The aim of the book is to present a new toolkit for using the structural parameter of treewidth to solve problems in knowledge representation and reasoning (KR) and artificial intelligence (AI), thereby establishing both theoretical upper and lower bounds, as well as methods to deal with treewidth efficiently in practice. The key foundations outlined in the book provide runtime lower bounds – under reasonable assumptions in computational complexity – for evaluating quantified Boolean formulas and logic programs which match the known upper bounds already published in 2004 and 2009. The general nature of the developed tools and techniques means that a wide applicability beyond the selected problems and formalisms tackled in the book is anticipated, and it is hoped that the book will serve as a starting point for future theoretical and practical investigations, which will no doubt establish further results and gain deeper insights.

Book Approximation Algorithms and Semidefinite Programming

Download or read book Approximation Algorithms and Semidefinite Programming written by Bernd Gärtner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-10 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semidefinite programs constitute one of the largest classes of optimization problems that can be solved with reasonable efficiency - both in theory and practice. They play a key role in a variety of research areas, such as combinatorial optimization, approximation algorithms, computational complexity, graph theory, geometry, real algebraic geometry and quantum computing. This book is an introduction to selected aspects of semidefinite programming and its use in approximation algorithms. It covers the basics but also a significant amount of recent and more advanced material. There are many computational problems, such as MAXCUT, for which one cannot reasonably expect to obtain an exact solution efficiently, and in such case, one has to settle for approximate solutions. For MAXCUT and its relatives, exciting recent results suggest that semidefinite programming is probably the ultimate tool. Indeed, assuming the Unique Games Conjecture, a plausible but as yet unproven hypothesis, it was shown that for these problems, known algorithms based on semidefinite programming deliver the best possible approximation ratios among all polynomial-time algorithms. This book follows the “semidefinite side” of these developments, presenting some of the main ideas behind approximation algorithms based on semidefinite programming. It develops the basic theory of semidefinite programming, presents one of the known efficient algorithms in detail, and describes the principles of some others. It also includes applications, focusing on approximation algorithms.

Book Searchable Encryption

Download or read book Searchable Encryption written by Kui Ren and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively reviews searchable encryption, which represents a series of research developments that directly enable search functionality over encrypted data. The book majorly covers: 1) the design and implementation of encrypted search algorithms, data structures, and systems that facilitate various forms of search over always-encrypted databases; 2) different threat models, assumptions, and the related security guarantees, when using searchable encryption in the real-world settings; and 3) latest efforts in building full-fledged encrypted database systems that draw insights from searchable encryption constructions. The book fits in the timely context, where the necessity of safeguarding important and sensitive data has been globally recognized. Traditional security measures, such as storing data behind network firewalls and layers of access control mechanisms to keep attackers out, are no longer sufficient to cope with the expanding landscape of surging cyber threats. There is an urgent call to keep sensitive data always encrypted to protect the data at rest, in transit, and in use. Doing so guarantees data confidentiality for owners, even if the data is out of their hands, e.g., hosted at in-the-cloud databases. The daunting challenge is how to perform computation over encrypted data. As we unfold in this book, searchable encryption, as a specific line of research in this broadly defined area, has received tremendous advancements over the past decades. This book is majorly oriented toward senior undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers, who want to work in the field and need extensive coverage of encrypted database research. It also targets security practitioners who want to make well-informed deployment choices of the latest advancements in searchable encryption for their targeted applications. Hopefully, this book will be beneficial in both regards.
