Book Boys Stories of Their Time in a Residential School

Download or read book Boys Stories of Their Time in a Residential School written by Mark Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides rich insights into the pre and post care experiences of boys who were pupils in a residential school where the author worked over the course of the 1980s. It describes the boys’ trajectories through life, as well as detailing the rhythms, rituals, routines, and relationships that existed in the school. While the focus is on the (former) boys’ experiences, these are augmented by interview material from staff members, including religious Brothers, who worked in the school. Together, these different perspectives provide unique insights into an area of social work history that is ill-served by existing accounts, making the book required reading for all scholars and students of social work; social and oral history; narrative sociology; criminology and desistance and social policy.

Book Nine Girls No Boys Stories Of Life In Rural Virginia

Download or read book Nine Girls No Boys Stories Of Life In Rural Virginia written by Daphne Harris Dews and published by BookLocker.com, Inc. . This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine Girls, No Boys is a collection of true stories of a family in rural Virginia—Daddy, Mama and nine children. All girls. No boys. For young Black parents trying to rear a large family in the 40s, 50s and 60s, there were tough times with years of struggle. Stories are funny, sad, depressing as well as triumphant. Being sharecroppers, the family deals with sub-standard farmhouses and landowners who are difficult. Moves from one farm to another take place as the family continues to grow. Daddy and Mama yearn for a home of their own. When Daddy gets his first tractor he has farmed so long with mules he uses the same commands to try to stop the tractor. He has to learn that saying “whoa” doesn’t work with the tractor. The brake has to be applied instead. Choosing appropriate names for the girls becomes an ordeal. With the assistance of relatives and older ladies in the community, some of the names chosen cause much ridicule and anguish for the girls. Having one car to transport a family of eleven provides interesting episodes. A door that swings open when Daddy makes turns while driving the car endangers the family. Holes in the floorboard of the car are hazardous as well as convenient at times. The family has its share of emergencies. Daddy’s controlled burning gets out of control, and endangers the farm and the entire community. One child swallows an object and has to seek medical attention. Another is burned badly as her clothes catch fire while she tries to stay warm in the poorly heated farmhouse. Segregated two-room schools with long distances to walk impact the girls’ educational opportunities and school attendance. Having to help Daddy with farm chores also makes attending school difficult. Teenage years and dating provide interesting reading. Mama and Daddy try to ensure that their girls grow up to be respectful young ladies by trying to enforce unorthodox rules. Perseverance, determination and hard work are evident as the family’s journey unfolds and the fate of Daddy, Mama and the nine girls is revealed.

Book Waramingo s Boys and Other Stories

Download or read book Waramingo s Boys and Other Stories written by Judith Lewis and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A BOLD WALKABOUT ACROSS THE LAND OF VISION, IMAGINATION, AND REALITY "The stories in this book are a combination of my imagination, vision, and experiences and contacts," writes storyteller Judith A. Lewis about this compelling collection of 65 stories about the Australian Outback, the Pacific, India, and traveling. "They came to me in vivid detail and I felt compelled to share these insights into a richer way of looking at our relationship to the Earth." Her theme is the journey, across landscapes, through cultures, or into the vivid realms of visionary experience. Lewis writes evocatively about traveling, in spirit and body, across Aboriginal and cultural terrains, from meeting kangaroo spirits to long-lost fathers. But she writes with equal insight and warmth about the enigmas of the heart, its secrets, joys, aspirations, and epiphanies. A twelve-year-old girl survives an illness by communing with the waratah in bloom. A traveler in Bombay is arrested by beauty amidst the frenetic urban haze. Two twins separated in early childhood journey towards each other. A homeless man constantly walks the highways to bury his past. An Aboriginal medicine man named Waramingo meets the Dreamtime ancestors. "A lot of the visionary stories pertain to the land and its secrets and those who visit it from afar," Lewis says. "I believe that the Earth is alive and awaiting our recognition as are the other dimensions that we all could inhabit. I hope my stories help you remember what you already know, that there is no separation, that everything, from stones to stars, is part of us on this lovely planet."

Book Stories for Boys A Memoir

Download or read book Stories for Boys A Memoir written by Gregory Martin and published by Hawthorne Books. This book was released on 2012-08-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir of fathers and sons, Gregory Martin struggles to reconcile the father he thought he knew with a man who has just survived a suicide attempt; a man who had been having anonymous affairs with men throughout his thirty-nine years of marriage; and who now must begin his life as a gay man. At a tipping point in our national conversation about gender and sexuality, rights and acceptance, Stories for Boys is about a father and a son finding a way to build a new relationship with one another after years of suppression and denial are given air and light. Martin’s memoir is quirky and compelling with its amateur photos and grab-bag social science and literary analyses. Gregory Martin explores the impact his father’s lifelong secrets have upon his life now as a husband and father of two young boys with humor and bracing candor. Stories for Boys is resonant with conflicting emotions and the complexities of family sympathy, and asks the questions: How well do we know the people that we think we know the best? And how much do we have to know in order to keep loving them?
