Book Black Jack

Download or read book Black Jack written by Frank E. Vandiver and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This National Book Award finalist traces the life of the general whose career began on the western frontier and culminated with victory in a world war. Using both domestic and foreign sources, many heretofore untapped, Frank Vandiver focuses on the qualities of and challenges to Pershing the soldier without losing sight of the man who wore the uniform. Vandiver gives special attention to Pershing's stint as head of the Bureau of Insular Affairs, his fourteen years' service in the Far East, and his unusual role as manager-organizer of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Here is a full-bodied portrait of a remarkable American, plus new insights into American and international military history, and a fresh view of the United States' rise to power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of General Pershing The purpose of the writer of this little book is merely to tell the story in outline of the career of the commander of the American Ex peditionary Forces in France. The modesty of General Pershing has kept his name out of print to a greater extent than in the case of many of our prominent men. His advancement also came rapidly in these recent years. As a result of these two conditions many of the fellow countrymen of the General are not familiar with the story of his early life or his successful work in the Philippines. This they not only have a right to know, but they ought to know. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book My Life before the World War 1860 1917

Download or read book My Life before the World War 1860 1917 written by John J. Pershing and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few American military figures are more revered than General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing (1860--1948), who is most famous for leading the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. The only soldier besides George Washington to be promoted to the highest rank in the U.S. Army (General of the Armies), Pershing was a mentor to the generation of generals who led America's forces during the Second World War. Though Pershing published a two-volume memoir, My Experiences in the World War, and has been the subject of numerous biographies, few know that he spent many years drafting a memoir of his experiences prior to the First World War. In My Life Before the World War, 1860--1917, John T. Greenwood rescues this vital resource from obscurity, making Pershing's valuable insights into key events in history widely available for the first time. Pershing performed frontier duty against the Apaches and Sioux from 1886--1891, fought in Cuba in 1898, served three tours of duty in the Philippines, and was an observer with the Japanese Army in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese War. He also commanded the Mexican Punitive Expedition to capture Pancho Villa in 1916--1917. My Life Before the World War provides a rich personal account of events, people, and places as told by an observer at the center of the action. Carefully edited and annotated, this memoir is a significant contribution to our understanding of a legendary American soldier and the historic events in which he participated.

Book General Pershing s Offcial Story

Download or read book General Pershing s Offcial Story written by John Pershing and published by St, John's Press. This book was released on 2016-09-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During and after the Great War, the United States as well as much of Europe honored and deified Pershing. This work from the period is no different. The below introduction comes from the book. This book contains the official report of General Pershing to Secretary of War Baker on America's participation in the World War. It is, perhaps, the most precious human document since the Declaration of Independence became the foundation of our glorious United States. The part our country played in restoring peace to the world found its inspiration in the deeds of 1776. Our imperishable obligation to France was one of the prime reasons why we made the supreme sacrifice. It found its echo in General Pershing's early visit to the tomb of Lafayette. The publishers were inspired to reprint this report for sale at a popular price so that a copy might be in every home in the land. The story of the American Army in France, as written by General John J.Pershing, will be handed down to the generations to come.

Book The Story of General Pershing

Download or read book The Story of General Pershing written by Everett T. Tomlinson and published by St. John's Press. This book was released on 2017-02-25 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author's Preface - The purpose of the writer of this little book is merely to tell the story in outline of the career of the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. The writer has endeavored to tell the story briefly as it has been told him, or as it has been kept in the records of the War Department and elsewhere. The complete biography and the analysis of General Pershing's personality and military career he leaves to later writers. The simple story of the struggles and achievements of a more or less typically successful American is presented, with the hope that others also may find in the record the inspiration and interest whicli the writer has found. Sometimes fighting against obstacles that appeared almost in- surmountable, struggling to obtain an education in the schools, not faltering when tragic sorrows came, his determination succeeding in military campaigns where previous centuries of fighting had failed-the career of General Pershing has been a continuous overcoming. Confidence in a great leader is an essential condition of victory and the writer has tried to present facts to show that the trust of the American people in their military leader is well founded.
