La réponse inflammatoire de l'hôte est l'une des causes majeures de la destruction tissulaire. La maladie parodontale est associée à des maladies systémiques notamment le diabète, l'hypertension artérielle et les maladies cardio-vasculaires. L'inflammation parodontale contribue au maintien de l'inflammation systémique par divers mécanismes. La revue de la littérature montre une association entre la présence de pathologies parodontales et la mortalité. Les résultats montrent un risque accru de la mortalité toutes causes confondues, par cancer et par maladies cardio-vasculaires des personnes atteintes de parodontite. Le chirurgien-dentiste se doit de dépister les pathologies que présentent les patients et les sensibiliser sur les liens entre les maladies systémiques et la maladie parodontale.
