Book Environmental Policy Instruments for Conserving Global Biodiversity

Download or read book Environmental Policy Instruments for Conserving Global Biodiversity written by Oliver Deke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-03-29 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current, unprecedented loss of global biodiversity resulting from anthropogenic interference in the world's ecosystems is affecting human well-being across the globe with increasing severity. This book examines two issues that are at the center of the public discussion on biodiversity. It examines whether genetic information derived from biodiversity can be used to create incentives to preserve biodiversity. Then, it examines whether establishing protected areas can be accomplished on an international level by using transfer payments.

Book Sustainable Financing of Protected Areas

Download or read book Sustainable Financing of Protected Areas written by Lucy Emerton and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2006 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become clear during recent global deliberations on biodiversity conservation that achieving Protected Area (PA) financial sustainability will require major changes in the way that PA funding is conceptualized, captured and used. With many, if not most, PAs facing funding crises, both in terms of the amount of funds available and how those are used, there is an urgent need to expand and diversify PA financial portfolios, and to ensure that funding reaches the groups and activities essential for biodiversity conservation. A range of innovative financing mechanisms have been developed and implemented to increase funding for PAs. This document aims to review and assess the status of a variety of these mechanisms, the major obstacles and opportunities for their implementation, and the potential for improvement.

Book Integrating Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use

Download or read book Integrating Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use written by Graham Bennett and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2004 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IUCN's 5th World Parks Congress (2003) concluded that parks should not exist as unique islands, but need to be planned and managed as an integral part of the broader landscape. Ecological networks provide an operational model for conserving biodiversity that is based on ecological principles and allow a degree of human use of the landscape. This publication illustrates the development of several ecological networks around the world, demonstrating their benefits both for conservation and sustainable development.

Book Conserving Biodiversity

Download or read book Conserving Biodiversity written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loss of the earth's biological diversity is widely recognized as a critical environmental problem. That loss is most severe in developing countries, where the conditions of human existence are most difficult. Conserving Biodiversity presents an agenda for research that can provide information to formulate policy and design conservation programs in the Third World. The book includes discussions of research needs in the biological sciences as well as economics and anthropology, areas of critical importance to conservation and sustainable development. Although specifically directed toward development agencies, non-governmental organizations, and decisionmakers in developing nations, this volume should be of interest to all who are involved in the conservation of biological diversity.

Book Biodiversity Finance and the Economic and Business Case for Action

Download or read book Biodiversity Finance and the Economic and Business Case for Action written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report sets the economic and business case for urgent and ambitious action on biodiversity. It presents a preliminary assessment of current biodiversity-related finance flows, and discusses the key data and indicator gaps that need to be addressed to underpin effective monitoring of both the pressures on biodiversity and the actions (i.e. responses) being implemented. The report concludes with ten priority areas where G7 and other countries can prioritise their efforts.

Book A Guide to Undertaking Biodiversity Legal and Institutional Profiles

Download or read book A Guide to Undertaking Biodiversity Legal and Institutional Profiles written by Lyle Glowka and published by World Conservation Union. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity-related laws and institutions will be key mechanisms for attaining the objectives of the Convention on biological diversity. As part of the national biodiversity planning process, legal and institutional profiles should be undertaken to ascertain which laws apply to and affect biodiversity and which institutions oversee legislation and portfolios which intersect with biodiversity conservation, sustainable use and benefit-sharing of genetic resources. Drawing on lessons learned in Bangladesh, Cuba and the Gambia, this will provide legal practitioners with background information and a suggested analytical road map for reviewing their country's particular legal and institutional situation.

Download or read book Paradise Lost written by Edward B. Barbier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994, Paradise Lost? is the outcome of a unique collaboration between economists and ecologists initiated by the Beijer Institute of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The book examines how the loss of biodiversity is one of the most serious problems the world faces, and suggests that new, interdisciplinary thinking is required to safeguard both us and the biosphere from the effects of species extinction. The book examines how an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to the conservation of biodiversity can understand and tackle the issue. It provides an overview of the causes of the problem, and examines previous approaches to dealing with it. The book also addresses how the loss of biodiversity affects natural systems and provides an examination of environmental policy, while discussing how this has been affected by the ecological limits to economic activity. This book will be of interest to both academics and students of environmental sciences, economics and politics.

Book Economic Incentives for Marine and Coastal Conservation

Download or read book Economic Incentives for Marine and Coastal Conservation written by Essam Yassin Mohammed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine and coastal resources provide millions of people with their livelihoods, such as fishing and tourism, and a range of critical additional ‘ecosystem services’, from biodiversity and culture to carbon storage and flood protection. Yet across the world, these resources are fast-diminishing under the weight of pollution, land clearance, coastal development, overfishing, natural disasters and climate change. This book shows how economic instruments can be used to incentivize the conservation of marine and coastal resources. It is shown that traditional approaches to halt the decline focus on regulating against destructive practices, but to little effect. A more successful strategy could be to establish schemes such as payments for ecosystem services (PES), or incorporate an element of financial incentives into existing regulatory mechanisms. Examples, both terrestrial and marine, from across the world suggest that PES can work to protect both livelihoods and environments. But to succeed, it is shown that these schemes must be underpinned by robust research, clear property rights, sound governance structures, equitable benefit sharing, and sustainable finance. Case studies are included from south and east Asia, Latin America, Africa and Australia. The book explores the prospects and challenges, and draws lessons from PES and PES-like programmes from across the globe.
