Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Seems Like Old Times: Returning to Frolic Once Again in Mayaland' is a travel journal of the adventures of Taco, as she returns to the Riviera Maya with her husband Vidal for yet another summer of discovering the richness of the land of the Maya. This time around, she rediscovers Cozumel accompanied by René, her original adventure partner-in-crime, has fun with a dolphin named Simba, checks out the Mayan Disneyland of Xcaret and its famous night extravaganza, and her self-described archaeologist-wannabe soul is further satisfied with a return to her top three Mayan archeological sites: Uxmal on the Ruta Puuc, Tulúm, and Cobá. Each story will transport you across the lands to join her and her often overactive imagination as you discover the richness of the Mayan paradise of the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula.

Book excerpt: Critical urban theory and postcolonial approaches are brought together in this compelling book to explore the relationship between colonial legacies, urbanization, and global capitalism in southern Mexico. Investigates the boom-to-bust story of maquiladoras in the state of Yucatán to shed light on how the built environment was shaped by discourse, imaginaries, and everyday practices Examines the infrastructure constructed to support the maquiladora project and traces the attempts of the state to portray Yucatán as an exotic and business-friendly maquiladora paradise Reveals how these practices stand in contrast to the livelihood strategies and life stories of maquiladora workers and residents Draws on a wide range of sources to illustrate a central tension in capitalism: its tendency to homogenize while thriving in differentiation Provides important insights into an understudied location and urges us to understand urbanization in the global South in new ways

Book excerpt: Yolanda Jamison went to Merida in Yucatan for a supposedly ordinary job. But from the first, things did not seem just right. The huge casa de Suarezwas, dark and foreboding; the old Mayan chauffeur, Kin, was full of strange legends and prophecies of a new rise to glory of the long conquered Mayan people; and her old and proud pure Spanish employer, Señora Suarez, had some real or imaginary skeletons in her closet and some very real but contraband artifacts in her treasure room. And then there was the dashing Juan, guide to the ruins, who flattered Yolanda with Latin charm, and the serious and aloof Paul, the American archaeologist who seemed perpetually annoyed at Yolanda's naïveté. And, too, there was Maria, the maid, the girl who seemed so ignorant and yet who knew so much. Yolanda found herself being drawn more and more into the dark affairs of the Suarez family, as Kin's legends of the wild winds that got out of control with the coming of the Spaniards seemed to come true. And then, one horrifying night, the storm and the lightning showed the full reality behind the façade.

Book Indigenous Geographies in the Yucatan

Download or read book Indigenous Geographies in the Yucatan written by Miguel Sioui and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of a broader attempt to decolonize colonial histories and understandings about Indigenous peoples and their relationships with their territories, and argues that the land ethos of "being part of the land," specifically among the Mayan community of Xuilub (Yucatan), Mexico, is guided by the cultural precept of 'responsibility-based' thinking. The work uniquely adds much needed insights into 'responsibility-based' thinking for land-use practices, and develops a theoretical framework for assessing historical impacts on Indigenous cultures and livelihoods. In six chapters, the text bridges Western and Indigenous Knowledge (IK) approaches to achieve deeper understanding of IKs, focusing on more Indigenous-centered methods, with the goal of expanding the disciplinary perspectives of postcolonial scholarship and Indigenous geographies. The book contains useful information for environmental planning/management scholars and geographers who may not be familiar with Indigenous approaches to land-use, and to Indigenous geographers working to bridge Western and Indigenous methodologies.
