Book Wintrobe s Clinical Hematology

Download or read book Wintrobe s Clinical Hematology written by John P. Greer and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 3094 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the 13th edition, Wintrobe’s Clinical Hematology once again bridges the gap between the clinical practice of hematology and the basic foundations of science. Broken down into eight parts, this book provides readers with a comprehensive overview of: Laboratory Hematology, The Normal Hematologic System, Transfusion Medicine, Disorders of Red Cells, Hemostasis and Coagulation; Benign Disorders of Leukocytes, The Spleen and/or Immunoglobulins; Hematologic Malignancies, and Transplantation. Within these sections, there is a heavy focus on the morphological exam of the peripheral blood smear, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and other tissues. With the knowledge about gene therapy and immunotherapy expanding, new, up-to-date information about the process and application of these therapies is included. Likewise, the editors have completely revised material on stem cell transplantation in regards to both malignant and benign disorders, graft versus host disease, and the importance of long-term follow-up of transplantation survivors.

Download or read book Blood Cell Biochemistry written by Leslie J. Fairbairn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first concepts of gene therapy were formulated, the hemopoietic system has been considered the most natural first target tissue for genetic manipulation. The reasons for this include the fact that a very large number of inherited disorders (including some of the most common disorders, such as the hemoglobinopathies) are disorders of the hemopoietic system, and the large amount of experience in hematopoietic transplantation biology. The consequence of this resulted in the first clinical trial of gene therapy in 1989, where two children suffering from severe combined immune deficiency (ADA-SCID) were transplanted with T-cells express ing adenosine deaminase (the defective enzyme in patients with this disorder). The partial success of this treatment was perhaps responsible for undue optimism among those proposing other gene therapy treatments within the hematopoietic system, and it has since become clear that there are a number of technical and biological difficulties to overcome before hematopoietic gene therapy becomes a mainstream therapeutic strategy. The chapters in this book evaluate the need for gene therapy in the hematopoietic system, discuss how efficient gene transfer and expression can be achieved in the target cells, highlight areas of difficulty to be addressed, and examine a number of potential applications of the gene therapy approach. The book begins with a chapter by Testa and colleagues, discussing the various sources of hematopoietic cells for both transplantation and gene therapy.

Book Clinical Bone Marrow and Blood Stem Cell Transplantation

Brenner join Kerry Atkinson as editors of this definitive reference on the clinical practice and underlying science of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. This third edition text is significantly revised and updated with 124 chapters balancing scientific explanations with practical information on patient care for all aspects of autologous, syngeneic, and allogeneic transplantation. This edition includes 18 new chapters on significant topics such as plasticity of stem cells, embryonic stem cells, and nonmyeloablative conditioning regimens. Thoroughly referenced through 2003, the chapters are divided into 15 sections, including biological background and practical procedures, clinical results, transplant-related and organ-specific complications, laboratory aspects, and developing areas, with a final 'breaking news' chapter from this rapidly evolving field. Over 170 internationally-recognized experts contributed to this authoritative and practical text that is an essential resource for hematologists, oncologists, and transplant specialists.

Book Biotechnology Annual Review

Download or read book Biotechnology Annual Review written by M.R. El-Gewely and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-11-14 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biotechnology Annual Review covers the various developments in biotechnology in the form of comprehensive, illustrated and well referenced reviews. With the expansion of the field of biotechnology, coupled with the vast increase in the number of new journals reporting recent results in this field, the need for a publication that is continuously providing reviews is urgent. Hence, each volume of the Biotechnology Annual Review will have a number of reviews covering different aspects of biotechnology. Reviewed topics will include biotechnology applications in medicine, agriculture, marine biology, industry, bioremedation and the environment. Fundamental problems dealing with enhancing the technical knowledge encountering biotechnology utilization regardless of the field of application will be particularly emphasized. This series will help both students and teachers, researchers as well as administrators to remain knowledgeable on all relevant issues in biotechnology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell therapy is a rapidly developing area, drawing on cell biology, molecular biology, virology, immunology, cell quantitation techniques and biomedical engineering. It has potential in many clinical settings, in the treatment of cancer and other diseases. This volume in the series Cancer: Clinical Science in Practice examines the current state and future prospects of cell therapy, which seems likely to have an even more profound impact on health care than did the production of proteins by recombinant DNA technology. The coverage is broad, including the scientific principles of haematopoietic cell therapy, the technology of cell collection and preparation, current and likely future clinical applications of cell therapy, and the principles and practice of cellular immunotherapy. Up-to-date and authoritative, volumes in this series are intended for a wide audience of clinicians and researchers with an interest in the applications of biomedical science to the understanding and management of cancer.

Book Bone Marrow Transplantation

Download or read book Bone Marrow Transplantation written by Susumu Ikehara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, remarkable advances have been made in bone marrow transplantation (BMT), which is now becoming a powerful tool in the treatment of diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, and congenital immunodeficiency. In animal experiments, it has been found that BMT can be used to treat not only systemic autoimmune diseases but also organ-specific autoimmune diseases. In humans, it has recently been shown that rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease can be successfully treated after BMT. This volume contains new information on how to prevent graft rejection, how T cell functions can be completely restored, and how concomitant BMT can prevent the rejection of organ allografts without the use of immunosuppressive agents. BMT will become an increasingly useful and powerful treatment for various currently intractable diseases, and this book will contribute by providing details of the latest research in the field.
