Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development of innovative modern methodologies towards augmenting conventional plant breeding, in individual crops, for the production of new crop varieties under the increasingly limiting environmental and cultivation factors to achieve sustainable agricultural production, enhanced food security, in addition to providing raw materials for innovative industrial products and pharmaceuticals. This Volume 5, subtitled Cereals, focuses on advances in breeding strategies using both traditional and modern approaches for the improvement of individual crops. It addresses important staple food crops including barley, fonio, finger millet, foxtail millet, pearl millet, proso millet, quinoa, rice, rye, tef, triticale and spelt wheat. The volume is contributed by 53 internationally reputable scientists from 14 countries. Each chapter comprehensively reviews the modern literature on the subject and reflects the authors own experience.

Book Effects of Drought on Eleusine Coracana L Gaertn finger Millet and Identification of Microsatellite Markers

Download or read book Effects of Drought on Eleusine Coracana L Gaertn finger Millet and Identification of Microsatellite Markers written by Anupreeti Ramadoss and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finger millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.) is a crop with high nutritional profile cultivated mainly in developing countries. It is an allotetraploid (2n= 4x= 36 chromosomes), that belongs to the Poaceae family and has a genome size of 2509 Mbp. Drought is one amongst other abiotic stresses limiting a plant's growth and productivity. In order to better understand the physiological responses of finger millet to drought, 12 parameters were studied by subjecting plants to water withholding at 26 DAS and imparting water stress for 6 days. Analyzing control plants in parallel indicated that IE 7079 was the most sensitive accession and IE 5091 was the most tolerant accession to water withholding. 83 accessions of finger millet obtained from ICRISAT was genotyped using 31 polymorphic simple sequence repeats (SSRs) identified from transcript assemblies. A total of 152 alleles were generated by these 31 SSRs, with a mean of 4.9 alleles per locus and mean polymorphism information content (PIC) of 0.49 Cluster analysis of these accessions showed considerable genetic variation in the varieties from different geographical origins. Identified polymorphic SSRs can be used to further expand the linkage map of finger millet.

Book Effect of Environmental Stress and Management on Grain and Biomass Yield of Finger Millet Eleusine Coracana L Gaertn

Download or read book Effect of Environmental Stress and Management on Grain and Biomass Yield of Finger Millet Eleusine Coracana L Gaertn written by Rachel Adoyo Opole and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Productivity of grain crops is highly sensitive to changing climates and crop management practices. Response of finger millet [Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.] to high temperature stress, and intensive management practices such as increased seeding rates and fertilizer application are not clearly understood. The objectives of this research were to determine the effects of (a) season-long, and short episodes of high temperature stress on growth and yield traits of finger millet, (b) seeding rates and nitrogen fertilizer application rates on grain and biomass yield, and (c) to evaluate the finger millet minicore collection for high grain and biomass yield. Controlled environment studies were conducted to determine the effects of high temperature stress on physiological, growth and yield traits. Field studies were conducted in Manhattan and Hays (Kansas) and Alupe (Kenya) to determine the effects of seeding and nitrogen fertilizer rates on growth and yield traits. Finger millet minicore collection was evaluated under field conditions in India, for phenology, growth and yield traits. Season long high temperature stress of 36/26 or 38/28°C compared to 32/22°C decreased panicle emergence, number of seeds per panicle, grain yield and harvest index. Finger millet was most sensitive to short episodes (10 d) of high temperature (40/30°C) during booting, panicle emergence and flowering stages, resulting in lower number of seeds, and grain yield. Finger millet responded to the interaction between environmental (locations) and temporal (years) factors. In general, locations with higher rainfall had greater grain and biomass yield than those with low rainfall. There was no influence of seeding rates (3.2 or 6.0 kg ha−1) at Hays and Alupe. However, in one of the two years in Manhattan, higher seeding rate of 6.0 kg ha−1 increased grain yield compared to 3.2 kg ha−1. There was no influence of nitrogen rates (0, 30, 60 or 90 kg ha−1) on grain or biomass yield at all three locations. However, higher fertilizer rates had greater percentage lodging. The finger millet minicore collection displayed large ranges for most quantitative traits including days to flowering, plant height, number of fingers panicle−1, grain yield, biomass yield, and lodging; and had>60% heritability. Some of the genotypes from the minicore collection have the potential to increase grain and biomass yield and abiotic stress tolerance of finger millet.
