Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Vinculis, or the Prisoner of War: Being the Experience of a Rebel in Two Federal Pens, Interspersed With Reminiscences of the Late War, Anecdotes of Southern Generals, Etc I answer, that the Southern people can be expected to have little interest in the American name, while they are denied American privileges, and we shall very contentedly see the American name suffer any reproach that truth can bring upon it. Nor do I think that while Jefferson Davis and C. C. Clay, and their compatriots, are denounced in official proclamations as assassins, the people of the United States can close the mouth of any accuser who offers reproach to the American name. Book The Fifth Massachusetts Colored Cavalry in the Civil War

Download or read book The Fifth Massachusetts Colored Cavalry in the Civil War written by Steven M. LaBarre and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1863, a long-anticipated military order arrived on the desk of Massachusetts Governor John Andrew. President Lincoln's secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, had granted the governor authority to raise regiments of black soldiers. Two units--the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantry--were soon mustered and in December, Andrew issued General Order No. 44, announcing "a Regiment of Cavalry Volunteers, to be composed of men of color...is now in the process of recruitment in the Commonwealth." Drawing on letters, diaries, memoirs and official reports, this book provides the first full-length regimental history of the Fifth Massachusetts Cavalry--its organization, participation in the Petersburg campaign and the guarding of prisoners at Point Lookout, Maryland, and its triumphant ride into Richmond. Accounts of the postwar lives of many of the men are included.

Book Irish Americans

    Book Details:
  • Author : William E. Watson

  • Release : 2014-11-25
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Irish Americans written by William E. Watson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtually every aspect of American culture has been influenced by Irish immigrants and their descendants. This encyclopedia tells the full story of the Irish-American experience, covering immigration, assimilation, and achievement. The Irish have had a significant impact on America across three centuries, helping to shape politics, law, labor, war, literature, journalism, entertainment, business, sports, and science. This encyclopedia explores why the Irish came to America, where they settled, and how their distinctive Irish-American identity was formed. Well-known Irish Americans are profiled, but the work also captures the essence of everyday life for Irish-Americans as they have assimilated, established communities, and interacted with other ethnic groups. The approximately 200 entries in this comprehensive, one-stop reference are organized into four themes: the context of Irish-American emigration; political and economic life; cultural and religious life; and literature, the arts, and popular culture. Each section offers a historical overview of the subject matter, and the work is enriched by a selection of primary documents.
