Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Village of Viger City came and put up the oddest wooden house that one could imagine. It was perfectly square there was a window and a door in front, a win dow at the side, and a window upstairs. There were many surmises as to the probable occupant of such a diminutive habitation and the widow Laroque, who made dresses and trimmed hats, and whose shop was directly opposite, and next door to the Post Oflice, suffered greatly from unsatisfied curiosity. No one who looked like the proprietor was ever seen near the place. The foreman of the laborers who were working at the house seemed to know nothing all that he said, in answer to questions, was: I have my orders. At last the house was ready; it was painted within and without, and Madame Laroque could scarcely believe her eyes when, one morning, a man came from the City with a small Sign under his arm and nailed it above the door. It bore these words: Mademoiselle Viau, Milliner. Ah! Said Madame Laroque, the bread is to be taken out of my mouth. The next day came a load of furniture, - not a very large load, as there was only a small stove, two tables, a bedstead, three chairs, a sort of lounge, and two large boxes. The man who brought the things put them in the house, and locked the door on them when he went away; then noth ing happened for two weeks, but Madame16 IN the village OF viger. Laroque watched. Such a queer little house it was, as it stood there S) new in its coat of gum colored paint. It looked just like a square bandbox which some Titan had made for his wife; and there seemed no doubt that if you took hold of the chimney and lifted the roof off, you would see the gigantic bonnet, with its strings and ribbons, which the Titaness could wear to church on Sundays. This reappraisal corrects this mistaken view by exploring the literary and cultural antecedents of the Canadian short story. Published in English.

Book In the Village of Viger and Other Stories

Download or read book In the Village of Viger and Other Stories written by Duncan Campbell Scott and published by Toronto: McClelland and Stewart. This book was released on 1973 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the fictional village of Viger, Duncan Campbell Scott's ten stories present a community torn apart by madness, festering jealousies, and lifelong animosities. From the almost demonic presence of "The Pedler" to the tender innocence of "The Bobolink" and the humour of "The Wooing of Monsieur Cuerrier," the collection explores a rural village facing the darkness of its own future. First published in 1896, "In The Village of Viger" is now recognized as a story cycle rather than merely a collection, hence standing at the beginning of a long tradition that includes such classics as Stephen Leacock's "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town" and Margaret Laurence's "A Bird in the House,"

Book Re exploring Canadian Space

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeanette M. L. den Toonder
  • Publisher : Barkhuis
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 9491431056
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Re exploring Canadian Space written by Jeanette M. L. den Toonder and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2012 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variety of productions and representations of Canadian identities are the central theme that runs through this book. The different contributions explore imagined spaces by considering Canadian music, poetry and novels; they engage with political space by addressing various ways in which the people of Canada have made claims to different regions in the distant and recent past; and they address lived spaces, and their actual and symbolic meanings. It is an unusual book as it encompasses the writings by those studying the arts and literature as well as writings by social scientists, and it includes both English and French-speaking scholars. The richness that can be found in this multitude of perspectives and approaches to exploring Canadian space is characteristic of the way in which Canadian Studies is practiced nowadays. It is therefore an appropriate volume to celebrate 20 years of Canadian Studies in the Netherlands.

Book excerpt: "The writing of Duncan Campbell Scott has long represented a sympathetic understanding of Canada's Native peoplesÑperhaps mistakenly so, however, as in his work as a bureaucrat, Scott put in place white paternalistic policies that Native peoples resist to this day. Floating Voice examines Scott's contradictions, with renewed consideration of his best ÒIndianÓ fiction and poetry ."
