Book excerpt: Supporting three wives, twelve children, and assorted relatives, Mohan Rai is a thoroughly modern man, convinced he's escaped an outmoded duty to follow his father as shaman to his Bhutanese village. But the gods and spirits, ancient protectors of the tribe, have other ideas. Dishonored and vengeful, they enter his dreams and haunt his days, destroying his business, his health, his sanity, and finally, his freedom. Based on Mohan's letters from prison, this true account by his first Western initiate will transform your worldview. "Ellen's retelling of Mohan Rai's first-hand account of his shamanic apprenticeship in Bhutan is a valuable contribution to the preservation of this ancient knowledge." -Michael Harner, Ph.D., author, The Way of the Shaman and Founder, Foundation for Shamanic Studies "I was fascinated. Like Autobiography of a Yogi, Mohan Rai's story shares much wisdom. Portraying his training from childhood in the ancient, mystical traditions of the shaman, this book brings a hopeful vision I will carry into my everyday life forever a reminder of the mysteries that sustain our lives and how little we know of them. The message runs deep." -Hal Zina Bennett, Ph.D., author, Spirit Animals and the Wheel of Life: Earth-Centered Practices for Everyday Living

Book Local Realities and Environmental Changes in the History of East Asia

Download or read book Local Realities and Environmental Changes in the History of East Asia written by Ts'ui-Jung Liu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental history has evolved into a well-established historical subfield which has broadened the horizons of historical research, beyond human affairs, to include the study of human interactions with natural and man-made environments. This broadened scope has attracted scholars from many different fields; a development which is reflected by this volume as it highlights the recent studies on East Asian environmental history by scholars of History, Economic History, Political ecology, Sociology and Environmental Studies. This book examines the local realities and environmental changes in East Asia, and is one of a few publications in English on the subject. Contributors apply rich historical material, maps and statistical data to reveal the local environmental realities infused by global perspectives. Part I deals with attitude toward nature, focusing on the soundscape conceived by traditional Chinese literati and on "industrious revolution" in Tokugawa Japan. Part II includes four case studies which respectively discuss the hydraulic management and political ecology in the Yongle reign (1403-1424), the "Woosung Bar" controversy in the 1870s, the expansion of Daihaizi Reservoir in Xinjiang in the 1950s, and interactions between the indigenous communities and NGOs in Hualien, Taiwan. Part III presents case studies of Japan dealing with natural disasters: volcano eruption, floods, and the human actions around Tokyo since the eighteenth century. These chapters and the insights they offer provide the reader with the most recent research on East Asian environmental history. Covering the geographical areas of Japan, North and Northwest China, the Lower Yangzi Delta and Taiwan, and the timeframe spanning the seventh century BC to the present day, the book will be of great interest to anyone studying the history of East Asia, environmental history or environmental studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Such striking words of “1998 Poetry Guild’s Official Call For Entries” attracted my attention. After days of consideration, I translated my Chinese poem “Diplomacy” into English and submitted. I was happy to find that my poem was accepted and collected into Shelter from the Storm. I didn’t pay for an entry fee, but of course, I paid for the book. I was quite encouraged. Hence, I continued to submit my poetry to Poetry Guild, the International Library of Poetry, and the Noble House Publishers. Now I have thirty-two poems collected into anthologies of these publishers. Many of such poems are also found in The Sound of Poetry. In these years, I do not translate or rewrite my Chinese poems into English alone. I also read English poetry and try to write poetry with the English language. “Uncle Horn” is one of such poems.
