Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Self's Place is an original phenomenological reading of Augustine that considers his engagement with notions of identity in Confessions. Using the Augustinian experience of confessio, Jean-Luc Marion develops a model of selfhood that examines this experience in light of the whole of the Augustinian corpus. Towards this end, Marion engages with noteworthy modern and postmodern analyses of Augustine's most "experiential" work, including the critical commentaries of Jacques Derrida, Martin Heidegger, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Marion ultimately concludes that Augustine has preceded postmodernity in exploring an excess of the self over and beyond itself, and in using this alterity of the self to itself, as a driving force for creative relations with God, the world, and others. This reading establishes striking connections between accounts of selfhood across the fields of contemporary philosophy, literary studies, and Augustine's early Christianity.

Book Self Service in the Internet Age

Download or read book Self Service in the Internet Age written by David Oliver and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dave Oliver, Celia Romm and Fay Sudweeks This book follows previous texts: Celia Romm and Fay Sudweeks (eds) (1998), Doing Business Electronically: A Global Perspective of Electronic Commerce, and Fay Sudweeks and Celia Romm (eds) (1999) Doing Business on the Internet: Opportunities and Pitfalls. Not only is this current book about doing something, but it also aims to present insights into how electronic commerce impacts upon the lives of everyday people; in other words, how electronic commerce is received, as well as how it is ‘done’. Accessing the Internet on a regular basis has become an established activity for many people. This activity gives academics and researchers the opportunity to observe and study the nature and effects of this engagement in society. The influence of the Internet in our social fabric also provides the incentive for organizations to implement a web presence. As expressed in the title Self-Service on the Internet: Expectations and Experiences, we aim to present the expectations or reasons for the availability of various services on the Internet, and social responses to these developments, i. e. the experiences. These are the two main dimensions to the chapters presented in this book. The major component in the title is self-service on the Internet. The term electronic commerce is too restrictive for our purpose as it tends towards commercial overtones, which do not especially concern us.

Book On The Origins of Self Service

Download or read book On The Origins of Self Service written by Franck Cochoy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most marketing scholars implicitly consider independent merchants as conservative and passive actors, and study the modernization of retailing via department stores, chains and supermarkets. In this innovative study, Franck Cochoy challenges this perspective and takes a close look at the transformation of commerce through the lens of Progressive Grocer, an American trade magazine launched in 1922. Aimed at modernizing small independent grocery stores, Progressive Grocer sowed the seeds for modern self-service which spread in small retail outlets, sometimes well before the advent of the large retail spaces which are traditionally viewed as the origin of the self-service economy. The author illustrates how this publication had a highly influential role on what the trade considered to be best practice and shaped what was considered to be cutting edge. By displacing the consumer and their agency from the centre of analytic attention, this innovative book highlights the complex impact of social, technical and retailing environment factors that structure and delimit consumer freedom in the marketplace. This detailed critical analysis of the origins of self-service will be of interest to a wide variety of scholars not only in marketing and consumer research, but also in business history, sociology and cultural studies.

Book Self Service Data Analytics and Governance for Managers

Download or read book Self Service Data Analytics and Governance for Managers written by Nathan E. Myers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project governance, investment governance, and risk governance precepts are woven together in Self-Service Data Analytics and Governance for Managers, equipping managers to structure the inevitable chaos that can result as end-users take matters into their own hands Motivated by the promise of control and efficiency benefits, the widespread adoption of data analytics tools has created a new fast-moving environment of digital transformation in the finance, accounting, and operations world, where entire functions spend their days processing in spreadsheets. With the decentralization of application development as users perform their own analysis on data sets and automate spreadsheet processing without the involvement of IT, governance must be revisited to maintain process control in the new environment. In this book, emergent technologies that have given rise to data analytics and which form the evolving backdrop for digital transformation are introduced and explained, and prominent data analytics tools and capabilities will be demonstrated based on real world scenarios. The authors will provide a much-needed process discovery methodology describing how to survey the processing landscape to identify opportunities to deploy these capabilities. Perhaps most importantly, the authors will digest the mature existing data governance, IT governance, and model governance frameworks, but demonstrate that they do not comprehensively cover the full suite of data analytics builds, leaving a considerable governance gap. This book is meant to fill the gap and provide the reader with a fit-for-purpose and actionable governance framework to protect the value created by analytics deployment at scale. Project governance, investment governance, and risk governance precepts will be woven together to equip managers to structure the inevitable chaos that can result as end-users take matters into their own hands.

Book Mediated Identities in the Futures of Place Emerging Practices and Spatial Cultures

Download or read book Mediated Identities in the Futures of Place Emerging Practices and Spatial Cultures written by Lakshmi Priya Rajendran and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the emerging problems and opportunities that are posed by media innovations, spatial typologies, and cultural trends in (re)shaping identities within the fast-changing milieus of the early 21st Century. Addressing a range of social and spatial scales and using a phenomenological frame of reference, the book draws on the works of Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Don Hide to bridge the seemingly disparate, yet related theoretical perspectives across a number of disciplines. Various perspectives are put forward from media, human geography, cultural studies, technologies, urban design and architecture etc. and looked at thematically from networked culture and digital interface (and other) perspectives. The book probes the ways in which new digital media trends affect how and what we communicate, and how they drive and reshape our everyday practices. This mediatization of space, with fast evolving communication platforms and applications of digital representations, offers challenges to our notions of space, identity and culture and the book explores the diverse yet connected levels of technology and people interaction.

Book Spaces of Belonging

Download or read book Spaces of Belonging written by Elizabeth H. Jones and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions of space, place and identity have become increasingly prominent throughout the arts and humanities in recent times. This study begins by investigating the reasons for this growth in interest and analyses the underlying assumptions on which interdisciplinary discussions about space are often based. After tracing back the history of contact between Geography and Literary Studies from both disciplinary perspectives, it goes on to discuss recent academic work in the field and seeks to forge a new conceptual framework through which contemporary discussions of space and literature can operate. The book then moves on to a thorough application of the interdisciplinary model that it has established. Having argued that the experience of contemporary space has rendered questions of home and belonging particularly pressing, it undertakes detailed analysis of how these phenomena are articulated in a selection of recent French life writing texts. The close, text-led readings reveal that whilst not often highlighted for their relevance to the analysis of space, these works do in fact narrate the impact of some of the most significant cultural experiences of the twentieth century, including the Holocaust and the AIDS crisis, upon geo-cultural senses of identity. Home is shown to be a deeply problematic, yet strongly desired, element of the contemporary world. The book concludes by addressing the underlying thesis that contemporary life writing might provide just the ‘postmodern maps’ that could help not only literary scholars, but also geographers, better understand the world today.Key names and concepts: Serge Doubrovsky - Hervé Guibert - Fredric Jameson - Philippe Lejeune - Régine Robin; Autofiction - Cultural Geography - Interdisciplinarity - Place and Identity - Postmodernism - Space - Postmodern Space - Literary Studies - Twentieth-Century Life Writing.
