Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Persian Mystics: Jami In the preparation of this little volume much depended upon the kindness and generosity of certain Oriental scholars, who have allowed me to reproduce some of their translations from Jami. I have attempted to give their best work in so far as it tends to illustrate the mystical teaching of the last great poet of Persia. Once more I am indebted to Mr. E. H. Whinfield for permission to quote from his translation of the Lawa'ih (Oriental Translation Fund, New Series, vol. xvi., Royal Asiatic Society, London). I have to thank Prof. Edward G. Browne for allowing me to use his beautiful translation from Yusuf and Zulaikha, which I have called "The Coming of the Beloved." This translation appears, in fuller form, in Prof. E. G. It is always difficult to get a caravan away in good time from quarters where they have been comfortably settled for a few days. We had the honour of a cavalry escort, who performed some respectable feats of equitation, such as firing at a mark while in full gallop, dismounting and remounting at the same pace, firing under the horse's neck while lying hidden along his side, and so on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persian Literature After a nine months' voyage he arrived at Pondicherry, whence he proceeded to Surat, the chief seat of the fire-worshippers, or Parsees. On arriving there, he proceeded with the greatest diligence to inquire after the ancient Zend works. By his connection with the French factory, then established at Surat, he was able, after much diffi culty and a liberal expenditure of money, to prevail upon two learned Parsee priests, acquainted with Zend and Pehlevi, to teach him those languages, which no European had ever learnt before him. He returned to Europe in 1761, with a hundred and eighty manuscripts, and in 1771 published his work called zend-avesta in three volumes. Book A Persian Requiem

Download or read book A Persian Requiem written by Simin Daneshvar and published by Halban Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tribal leaders in opposition to the government, the corruption of occupation, society torn apart by shifting political loyalties... this is the background to one woman's powerful story. A Persian Requiem is a powerful and evocative novel. Set in the southern Persian town of Shiraz in the last years of World War II, when the British army occupied the south of Persia, the novel chronicles the life of Zari, a traditional, anxious and superstitious woman whose husband, sef, is an idealistic feudal landlord. The occupying army upsets the balance of traditional life and throws the local people into conflict. sef is anxious to protect those who depend upon him and will stop at nothing to do so. His brother, on the other hand, thinks nothing of exploiting his kinsmen to further his own political ambitions. Thus a web of political intrigue and hostilities is created, which slowly destroys families. In the background, tribal leaders are in open rebellion against the government, and a picture of a society torn apart by unrest emerges. In the midst of this turbulence, normal life carries on in the beautiful courtyard of Zari's house, in the rituals she imposes upon herself and in her attempt to keep the family safe from external events. But the corruption engendered by occupation is pervasive - some try to profit as much as possible from it, others look towards communism for hope, whilst yet others resort to opium. Finally even Zari's attempts to maintain normal family life are shattered as disaster strikes. An immensely moving story, A Persian Requiem is also a powerful indictment of the corrupting effects of colonization. A Persian Requiem (first published in 1969 in Iran under the title Savushun), was the first novel written by an Iranian woman and, sixteen reprints and half a million copies later, it remains the most widely read Persian novel. In Iran it has helped shape the ideas and attitudes of a generation in its revelation of the factors that contributed to the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Simin Daneshvar's A Persian Requiem ... goes a long way towards deepening our understanding of Islam and the events leading up to the 1979 Revolution ... The central characters adroitly reflect different Persian attitudes of the time, attitudes that were eventually to harden into support for either the Ayatollah and his Islamic fundamentalism or, alternatively, for the corrupting Westernisation of the Shah. The value of the book lies in its ability to present these emergent struggles in human terms, in the day-to-day realities of small-town life ... Complex and delicately crafted, this subtle and ironic book unites reader and writer in the knowledge that human weakness, fanaticism, love and terror are not confined to any one creed. The Financial Times A Persian Requiem is not just a great Iranian novel, but a world classic. The Independent on Sunday ... it would be no exaggeration to say that all of Iranian life is there. Spare Rib For an English reader, there is almost an embarrassment of new settings, themes and ideas ... Under the guise of something resembling a family saga - although the period covered is only a few months - A Persian Requiem teaches many lessons about a society little understood in the West. Rachel Billington, The Tablet This very human novel avoids ideological cant while revealing complex political insights, particularly in light of the 1979 Iranian revolution. Publishers Weekly A Persian Requiem, originally published [in Iran] in 1969, was a first novel by Iran's first woman novelist. It has seen sixteen reprints, sold over half a million copies, and achieved the status of a classic, literally shaping the ideas of a generation. Yet when asked about the specific appeal of the novel, most readers are at a loss to pinpoint a single, or even prominent aspect to account for this phenomenal success. Is it the uniquely feminine perspective, allowing the read

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King and Cobbler: A Romance of Ancient Persia Among all the cities of old, the ruins of which are now left to tell of the mighty age that has long since passed away, none exceeded in extent, in wealth, or in grandeur, Persepolis, the chief capital of ancient Persia. At the foot of a steep, rugged mountain, was extended a wide plain, watered by a goodly river. Upon all hands this plain was shut in by high cliffs of rock, looming darkly in the distance, leaving the level space some five-and-twenty miles in length, and upon this was the city built, occupying the whole vast area. The wealth of the royal palace almost exceeds belief. It was a vast structure, serving not only for the royal residence, but also for a citadel and bulwark. Its colonnade of massive pillars still stands, and is a fit object of wonder. These pillars are of gray marble and seventy feet high, and their capitals, which are of an order of architecture differing from any other then in use, are beautiful in the extreme. The interior of this kingly abode was literally cased with gold and precious stones, and to count or estimate the wealth there displayed, were a task beyond the ability of one man. And then other evidences of grandeur were built in the city, and upon all hands were to be seen sculptures and towers, and courts and monuments. And as though the vast plain gave not room enough for the ingenuity of the sculptors, the faces of the very rocks that formed the cliff wall of the city were cut and carved in a most elaborate and finished manner. Into the facts of the larger rocks were cut tombs and sepulchral chambers, with beautiful porticos richly sculptured from the solid cliff. Truly the king of Persia had wealth, for his capital contained within itself the wealth of a nation. And he had power, for thousands on thousands bowed down to do him homage, and princes and potentates acknowledged his authority. Next in importance among the palaces of Persepolis to that of the king was the palace of Rustem, one of the most powerful satraps, or governors, of the realm. Rustem was now past the meridian of life, but still strong and vigorous, and fond of all those manly sports which were the delight of the warrior race of that period. He was a favorite of the king, a friend to those who bowed to him, and sometimes generous and benevolent to the poor. He could be warm and ardent in his attachments, and he could love with his whole heart; but there was no principle, no moral obligation, felt by him. He was the slave of impulse, and the owner of a will that would not bend. Very slight causes would attract his friendship, and causes just as slight would arouse his anger and hate. Above all things else did he love to be honored and obeyed and flattered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. North was the long range of the snowy Elburz, dominated by the immense cone of Demavend South was the dusty brown plain with the broad green stains on it, the largest of which was the town hidden in its gardens. We were talking politics, and I was discoursing on the benefits of progress and civilisation as exemplified in the recent history of European nations. AS a piece justificati've I pointed to the long line of iron telegraph poles, neat and well kept, in that land without any order, which stretched out, one behind the other, till they vanished in the West. Along that wire, I said, English people are speaking to each other from opposite Sides of the earth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rose Garden of Omar Khayyam: Founded on the Persian It is 1nevitable that a man of so many sides and Of such accomplishment should have been, like Shake speare, variously regarded. The varying interpreta tions, literal or mystical, applied to his writings, his keen power of mockery, his capacity in the mere statement of a proposition which he contested, of hanging his doubt or refutation thereon, contributed to this result. For in addition to the above views of him he has been deemed a free thinker; a man of science; a 5072 a devout and orthodox Mussulman; a railer at religion and morality; a pes simist; a serene epicure absorbed in the pleasures Of the present and claimed by materialist and Sufi alike. All of which goes to show, if it shows anything, the greatness and universality of Omar's real nature. Doubtless if the old Persian were now permltted to characterize himself, he would use the formula of Bottom as applied to Snug the joiner, in the role of Lion, I am a man as other men are.
