They improved their fortunes, too, by frequent and judicious marriages with the greatest Marcher families, and their devotion to Henry III in his wars against the barons left them after the victory of Evesham more potent than ever. But when the introduction of the second Edward's favourites to place and honour on the march stung its great families into active protest, Roger Mortimer went out with the rest, and at the defeat of Boroughbridge was taken captive and immured in the Tower of London under sentence of death. How he drugged the constable who was good-naturedly entertaining him at a final carousal, bribed the jailor and escaped to Queen Isabella in France, and what came of it afterwards, is a matter of common history. It is a familiar story, too, how he meted out twofold vengeance on the hapless king, by annexing his queen and compassing his ruin even if he did not actually order his murder, as rumour had it. He entertained Queen Isabella and Prince Edward in regal state at Wigmore as well as at Ludlow, which had by then become a Mortimer possession. But he gave such rein to his immoderate ambition and love of display that even his own son dubbed him "the king of folly." The turn of fortune when it came, as it generally did in those days sooner or later, was complete. For Edward III was not satisfied with meting out an honourable death to the gentle Mortimer, the late ruler of England and his mother's paramour, but he hung him high on a common gallows at Tyburn, the very first victim to suffer on that notorious spot. We were strangers, and the hotel people, using their prescriptive right in a place where strangers are rare, took us in, in a manner peculiarly unscriptural. You see, said one who condoled with us, later, they reason thus: Hither come strangers to tour along the Wye. They stay a day or two; perhaps a week; possibly a fort night, and then they go away, to return no more. Evidently the thing to do is to get as much out of them as possible, while they are yet here. Contemporary chroniclers give us vague and fragmentary reports of what happened there, though supplementary sources of information enable us to piece together a fairly consecutive and intelligible story. From the first battle of St Albans to the accession of Edward IV the centre of gravity of the military situation was in the Marches: Ludlow was the chief seat of the duke of York, and the vast Mortimer estates in mid-Wales his favourite recruiting ground. It was here that he experienced his first serious reverse - at Ludford Bridge; it was here, too, that his son Edward, earl of March, won his way to the throne - at Mortimer's Cross. Further, Henry Tudor landed at Milford Haven, and with a predominantly Welsh army defeated Richard III at Bosworth. For these reasons alone unique interest attaches to Wales and the Marches in this thirty years' war; and it is to be hoped that the investigation will throw some light on much that has hitherto remained obscure. The subsequent development of a powerful Welsh state under the leadership of the princes of Gwynedd was checked by Edward I in 1277, and thereafter the principality was deliberately overrun and destroyed: the Edwardian castles are symbols of conquest. Despite valiant attempts by local leaders in the thirteenth century, and by a national leader Owain Glyn Dwr early in the fifteenth, the English domination of Wales persisted, even beyond the advent of the Tudor dynasty. This is the first comprehensive short textbook on medieval Wales to be written for school and university students. It will also attract anyone with a general interest in Celtic studies or in the centuries which played such a formative role in the development of the Welsh national character.
