Book Thinking About National Security

Download or read book Thinking About National Security written by Donald M. Snow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2016 Perhaps the most basic national security question that U.S. leaders and the body politic continuously face is where and under what circumstances to consider and in some cases resort to the use of armed force to ensure the country’s safety and well-being. The question is perpetual—but the answer is not. This insightful text helps students make sense of the ever-changing environment and factors that influence disagreement over national security risks and policy in the United States. The book takes shape through a focus on three considerations: strategy, policy, and issues. Snow explains the range of plans of action that are possible and resources available for achieving national security goals, as well as the courses of action for achieving those goals in the context of a broad range of security problems that must be dealt with. However, there is little agreement among policymakers on exactly what is the nature of the threats that the country faces. Snow helps readers frame the debate by suggesting some of the prior influences on risk-assessment, some of the current influences on national security debates, and suggestions for how future strategy and policy may be shaped.

Book Security Interests in Personal Property

Download or read book Security Interests in Personal Property written by Steven L. Harris and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth Edition continues the emphasis on real-life problems and transactions that has distinguished these teaching materials for decades. As in previous editions, the Problems are tailored to focus the student's attention on the relevant statutory language and its application to common patterns of secured financing. They emphasize counseling, planning, drafting, and litigation skills. In addition to more traditional Problems, which ask the student to predict the outcome, many of the Problems ask the student to give advice to clients, to structure transactions, and to draft certain provisions of documents. As in the Third Edition, many of the Problems are based upon Prototype transactions that feature actual transaction documents. The first'financing an automobile dealer's inventory and financing a consumer buyer's purchase of an automobile from the dealer'affords the basis for a discussion of basic Article 9 concepts in a concrete setting. The second Prototype features an accounts and inventory ?borrowing-base? secured credit facility and includes a revolving credit agreement and security agreement. This Prototype forms the basis for detailed coverage of various types of financing secured by receivables and other intangible property.

Book Media Freedom as a Fundamental Right

Download or read book Media Freedom as a Fundamental Right written by Jan Oster and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic constitutions and courts applying international human rights conventions acknowledge the significance of the mass media for a democratic society, not only by granting special privileges but also by imposing enhanced duties and responsibilities to journalists and media companies. However, the challenges of media convergence, media ownership concentration and the internet have led to legal uncertainty. Should media privileges be maintained, and, if so, how is 'the media' to be defined? To what extent does media freedom as a legal concept also encompass bloggers who have not undertaken journalistic education? And how can a legal distinction be drawn between investigative journalism on the one hand and reporting on purely private matters on the other? To answer these questions, Jan Oster combines doctrinal and conceptual comparative analysis with descriptive and normative theory, and argues in favour of a media freedom principle based on the significance of the media for public discourse.

Book Is It Safe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah A. Vogel
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 0520273575
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Is It Safe written by Sarah A. Vogel and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all just a little bit plastic. Traces of bisphenol A or BPA, a chemical used in plastics production, are widely detected in our bodies and environment. Is this chemical, and its presence in the human body, safe? What is meant by safety? Who defines it, and according to what information? Is It Safe? narrates how the meaning of the safety of industrial chemicals has been historically produced by breakthroughs in environmental health research, which in turn trigger contests among trade associations, lawyers, politicians, and citizen activists to set new regulatory standards. Drawing on archival research and extensive interviews, author Sarah Vogel explores the roots of the contemporary debate over the safety of BPA, and the concerns presented by its estrogen-like effects even at low doses. Ultimately, she contends that science alone cannot resolve the political and economic conflicts at play in the definition of safety. To strike a sustainable balance between the interests of commerce and public health requires recognition that powerful interests will always try to shape the criteria for defining safety, and that the agenda for environmental health research should be protected from capture by any single interest group.
