Book The Routledge Companion to Theatre of the Oppressed

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Theatre of the Oppressed written by Kelly Howe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dynamic book offers a comprehensive companion to the theory and practice of Theatre of the Oppressed. Developed by Brazilian director and theorist Augusto Boal, these theatrical forms invite people to mobilize their knowledge and rehearse struggles against oppression. Featuring a diverse array of voices (many of them as yet unheard in the academic world), the book hosts dialogues on the following questions, among others: Why and how did Theatre of the Oppressed develop? What are the differences between the 1970s (when Theatre of the Oppressed began) and today? How has Theatre of the Oppressed been shaped by local and global shifts of the last 40-plus years? Why has Theatre of the Oppressed spread or "multiplied" across so many geographic, national, and cultural borders? How has Theatre of the Oppressed been shaped by globalization, "development," and neoliberalism? What are the stakes, challenges, and possibilities of Theatre of the Oppressed today? How can Theatre of the Oppressed balance practical analysis of what is with ambitious insistence on what could be? How can Theatre of the Oppressed hope, but concretely? Broad in scope yet rich in detail, The Routledge Companion to Theatre of the Oppressed contains practical and critical content relevant to artists, activists, teachers, students, and researchers.

Book Philosophical Chronicles

Download or read book Philosophical Chronicles written by Jean-Luc Nancy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In eleven brief, engaging talks originally broadcast on French public radio, Jean-Luc Nancy offers a philosopher’s rough and ready account of some of the pressing questions of our day and addresses chronic issues within philosophical inquiry. The fundamental question, which recurs again and again, is whether philosophy is conditioned by the world the philosopher inhabits, or whether it must remain unconditioned by that world. Nancy discusses: terror in relation to religion and capitalism; the relevance of philosophy to life (whether philosophy can be a form of life); the status of god in monotheism; the relevance of “politics” as it is defined today; the “Heidegger affair” and its consequences for philosophy; war, especially in the context of the invasion of Iraq; the role of negativity in philosophical and cultural discourses; “art” and the variability of its meanings; the predominance of the metaphor of the sun. The essays can be read separately, but together they amount to the striking vision of a philosopher sensitive to the world of his times and attempting to open his own path within it.

Into this context comes a new, indispensable volume. The Logic of the Gift offers several important essays on gifts and gift-giving that are often referred to but seldom read, and adds to them new essays written especially for this collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1940 the Nazis hoped to cripple the British war effort by blockading Swedish cargo ships containing ball bearings, steel and tools vital for making arms and equipment. In desperation the newly formed SOE was asked to rescue these badly needed supplies and a daring escapade was dreamt, which involved sneaking in under the Germans' noses to steal the ships. It was a dangerous mission and the 147 men involved knew there was a high chance they would not come home. The terrifying operation to rescue cargoes of ball bearings in clunky transport ships, while trying to outrun the Luftwaffe and German navy, had never been attempted before. It was a success that was never repeated.Making use of newly released files from the National Archives, Sophie Jackson tells the story of a forgotten adventure that saved Britain and her troops from certain defeat, all because of brave men willing to sacrifice their lives for millions of small balls of steel.

Book Formula V

  • Author : Richard Kranzley
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2011-06
  • ISBN : 1456745700
  • Pages : 152 pages

Download or read book Formula V written by Richard Kranzley and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flying in the face of current leadership models which advocate imitation of "ideal" behaviors, Formula V focuses on leadership vitality, that force which moves us from being externally manipulated to being internally directed toward leadership success. In a model which combines wisdom and experience across ages and cultures, Formula V asks: How do we tap the ability that resides in each of us to lead with Vitality (exuberant mental vigor; capacity for a meaningful or purposeful existence)? How do we move from mimicry of others to transforming ourselves? It starts with changing our definition of leadership. We need to shift our distinctions and assessments from skills and competencies to qualities and character. We could all benefit from switching our focus from doing leadership to BEING a leader. Based on in-depth experience in coaching organizational leaders for 30 years across diverse industries, Kranzley guides the reader through a model based on five (or V) Qualities or Virtues: Courage, Humility, Honesty, Resonance, and Altruism. By honing one's leadership character to incorporate these into authentic behavior, a leader can grow into leadership with lasting significance. Are these qualities learned or are they innate? Leadership is like poetry. You can improve language skills, build vocabulary, and learn about rhythm and rhyme. In that way one enables those inner poets to shine, ONLY IF there is a poet already inside. Formula V will help you assess your areas of need and of power. In our world today, we are challenged by an increasingly uncertain and rapidly evolving global economy where leadership is affected by not only the values of national cultures, but also the belief systems and paradigms of the world's varying religious traditions. It becomes paramount for a leader in today's world to understand how connecting with the core of one's being (spirit) will equate to leading with vitality. Rick shares cross-cultural stories and fables to illustrate and entertain (The Cow and the Pig, The Three Blind Men, Arachne, Student of Athena); taps the insight and wisdom of some of the world's sages (Aristotle, Lao-Tzu, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Ted Collins, Nelson Mandela); and shares thought-provoking examples of leaders who will remind readers of who we want to be, and who we don't. Formula V will help unlock the leader who you want to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines marketization: a phenomenon by which market processes are institutionalized and marketing increasingly pervades all areas of our everyday life. It presents a number of theories, frameworks and empirical studies highlighting how the phenomenon of marketization affects the 21st century consumer. The book also contests the traditional understanding of markets, offering a more comprehensive treatment of marketization and a fresh perspective on the dynamics of markets and the institutions that control everyday consumption practices. This book is an ideal resource for academics, reflective practitioners and policy-makers interested in formulating appropriate change strategies in the face of the globalization that affects emerging markets so profoundly. This well-crafted research book is a valuable addition to the sparse literature on theories of marketization. The authors refigure the existing theories more broadly and present compelling evidence and insights into market phenomenon such as marginality, alternative market forms and consumer identity.

Book Calculating Promises

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roy Kreitner
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2006-12-08
  • ISBN : 9780804768054
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Calculating Promises written by Roy Kreitner and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2006-12-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of American contract law around the turn of the twentieth century. It meticulously details shifts in our conception of contract by juxtaposing scholarly accounts of contract with case law, and shows how the cases exhibit conflicts for which scholarship offers just one of many possible answers. Breaking with conventional wisdom, the author argues that our current understanding of contract is not the outgrowth of gradual refinements of a centuries-old idea. Rather, contract as we now know it was shaped by a revolution in private law undertaken toward the end of the nineteenth century, when legal scholars established calculating promisors as the centerpiece of their notion of contract. The author maintains that the revolution in contract thinking is best understood in a frame of reference wider than the rules governing the formation and enforcement of contracts. That frame of reference is a cultural negotiation over the nature of the individual subject and the role of the individual in a society undergoing transformation. Areas of central concern include the enforceability of promises to make gifts; the relationship of contracts to speculation and gambling; and the problem of incomplete contracts.
