Book In the Eye of the Storm Stories of Survival and Hope from the Florida Panhandle

Download or read book In the Eye of the Storm Stories of Survival and Hope from the Florida Panhandle written by Jennifer N. Fenwick and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: October 10, 2018, changed us forever. It was hard to imagine coming back from this. But at heart, the people of the Florida Panhandle are strong. They are the heroes in this story. The ones who inspire hope and wield inexhaustible strength. This is their story. Told in their own words. In their poetry. In the images they captured. Hurricane Michael brought so many changes to the Panhandle of Florida. The most obvious changes, to the landscape and to the buildings, is unmistakable. Following the storm, the area looked like a warzone. One thing that has not changed is the resilience and faith of the people in the region. Watching the countless volunteers, the residents reaching out in their own hour of need to help another, witnessing random acts of kindness daily, has been inspiring and life-affirming. In the Eye of the Storm: Stories of Survival and Hope from the Florida Panhandle is a collection of stories from people who rode out the storm, were first on the scene in the aftermath, who have weathered the weeks and months since Michael slammed into the area, and who have come from far and wide to assist. They are daily reminders of the strength of the human spirit and the power of hope so needed in the aftermath. Countless people rode out the category 4 (almost category 5) storm and swear they will never do it again. Volunteers pouring into the state in the days following the destruction repeatedly said they have never seen anything like it. City and county officials promise rebuilding has begun and that the area will be back stronger than ever. It's the residents though, the ones who woke the following morning to a world inexplicably altered, that are at the heart of this project. The survivors. The broken. The devastated. It's their voices that tell the story best. Their beauty and resilience is inspiring and so worthy of recognition. This is for them.

Book excerpt: There have only been four. Only four recorded Atlantic storms have maintained category five strength as they barreled inland to overwhelm the Eastern and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. The most recent category 5 hurricane to devastate this region was Hurricane Michael.Michael made landfall in the early afternoon hours of October 10, 2018, in the Florida Panhandle. With maximum sustained winds of 161 mph, Michael's eye came ashore near the tiny coastal community of Mexico Beach, FL, nearly eradicating its existence from the landscape. When we emerged from the shelters we had hurriedly taken, we were greeted with an eerie silence that left us with overpowering shock and grief. Over the course of the next days, weeks, and months, stories began to emerge. Stories that broke our hearts while at the same time, inspiring and strengthening our resolve and determination. There are so many stories. As Tony Simmons, a writer for the News Herald wrote a few weeks after the storm, "We all became storytellers that day."In the Aftermath of the Storm: Stories of Hope and Healing, is a collection of stories, poetry, and images created as we've moved through the phases of recovery. From heartbreak and grief to hope and rebuilding, these are our words. Each story, poem, and image included comes from the heart of the people who survived and who are continuing to live in the aftermath. Like its predecessor, In the Eye of the Storm: Stories of Survival and Hope from the Florida Panhandle, all proceeds from book sales go directly to the Hurricane Michael Relief Fund to help those struggling in the aftermath and to assist with rebuilding communities and lives. #850strong

Book In the I of the Hurricane

Download or read book In the I of the Hurricane written by Rebecca A. Keen and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-18 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After relocating to Florida, author Rebecca A. Keen lived in a condo on Charlotte Harbor in Punta Gorda, a small community north of Fort Myers. On September 28, 2022, as the eye of Hurricane Ian barreled toward the harbor, she waited in terror. Initially predicted to make landfall farther north, many had ignored the evacuation warnings, and all across southwest Florida, residents sheltered in place. Then, this unpredictable Category 5 hurricane unleashed a 500-year record storm surge, decimating entire towns. Nearly one year later, on August 26, 2023, Hurricane Idalia, a Category 4 storm, struck the Big Bend area of the state, causing chaos and destruction to its victims. In The I of the Hurricane, Keen visits the towns and beaches where each storm made landfall. Through weather bulletins, text messages, and personal accounts, she shares meaningful insights and inspires hope in the face of the unimaginable. This narrative includes her personal, firsthand experience in the storms as well as stories from some of the survivors. She tells how families and entire communities united through the complete devastation of both Hurricane Ian and Idalia.

Book excerpt: Eighty victims of Hurricane Ian, whose lives changed the day the monster storm hit the southwest coast of Florida, tell their stories of survival, loss, heroism, humanity, and resilience. These first-person, true accounts of the most disastrous hurricane to hit Florida in eighty-seven years are heartfelt, sad, harrowing, uplifting, and sometimes even funny. Many are edited by Gulf Coast Writers Association authors, but some are left in the pure, raw voices of people in pain. The collection of these stories is a labor of love for the GCWA. Our purpose is to give voice to everyday people, writers and non-writers alike, who experienced the traumatic storm and its protracted aftermath. Hurricane Ian inflicted damage on all levels of society, all ages, all backgrounds, and in a wide area of southwest Florida, so GCWA reached out to all. No story should be forgotten. Robert N. Macomber, award-winning author of seventeen books, likens his refugee status amid the destruction of Pine Island to refugees he met during his travels to third-world countries. Leoma Lovegrove, internationally-known artist and Matlacha resident, created and donated the cover artwork in her unique and colorful style. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being Caught In The Eye Of Natures Most Powerful Storm On The Planet October 10th, 2018, was the day my whole life has changed forever in being in the eye of the perfect storm. This specific storm has given me an insight that riding it out was a poor choice and reminding me that evacuating is extremely important if you live in a hurricane prone area. It also has given me intuition of the living conditions while enduring the wrath of the storm. I was stubborn to heed the evacuation orders from the officials, therefore I've learned a crucial life lesson. What's included in the story while encountering the storm: My preparation ahead of time before the storm arrived My experience while enduring the intense winds in the eyewall of the hurricane Experiencing in being in the eye of the beast The living condition after the hurricane passed through The aftermath in the vicinity of the neighborhood A guide on what you should and should not do while being in the path or enduring the hurricane I lived in Callaway, (FL) my whole life before moving up north to Charlotte, (NC) recently. Located in the Florida Panhandle between the cities of Pensacola to its west and Tallahassee to its east, Callaway is in the suburbs of Panama City, FL. I've been fascinated in tracking natural disasters such as hurricanes for as long as I can remember. I consider myself a weather nerd. Hurricanes are mother nature's most beautiful storms that should be respected but at the same they can be extremely destructive. Even though hurricanes are nature's most beautiful storm from a meteorological standpoint, at the same exact time they can be extremely deadly and drastically change lives.

Book excerpt: “An intense, immersive deep dive into a wild, dangerous, and unknown world, written with the pace and appeal of a great thriller. This is nonfiction at its very best.”—Lee Child The true story of two doomed ships and a daring search-and-rescue operation that shines a light on the elite Coast Guard swimmers trained for the most dangerous ocean missions In late September 2015, Hurricane Joaquin swept past the Bahamas and swallowed a pair of cargo vessels in its destructive path: El Faro, a 790-foot American behemoth with a crew of thirty-three, and the Minouche, a 230-foot freighter with a dozen sailors aboard. From the parallel stories of these ships and their final journeys, Tristram Korten weaves a remarkable tale of two veteran sea captains from very different worlds, the harrowing ordeals of their desperate crews, and the Coast Guard’s extraordinary battle against a storm that defied prediction. When the Coast Guard received word from Captain Renelo Gelera that the Minouche was taking on water on the night of October 1, the servicemen on duty helicoptered through Joaquin to the sinking ship. Rescue swimmer Ben Cournia dropped into the sea—in the middle of a raging tropical cyclone, in the dark—and churned through the monstrous swells, loading survivors into a rescue basket dangling from the helicopter as its pilot struggled against the tempest. With pulsating narrative skill in the tradition of Sebastian Junger and Jon Krakauer, Korten recounts the heroic efforts by Cournia and his fellow guardsmen to haul the Minouche’s crew to safety. Tragically, things would not go as well for Captain Michael Davidson and El Faro. Despite exhaustive searching by her would-be rescuers, the loss of the vessel became the largest U.S. maritime disaster in decades. As Korten narrates the ships’ fates, with insights drawn from insider access to crew members, Coast Guard teams, and their families, he delivers a moving and propulsive story of men in peril, the international brotherhood of mariners, and the breathtaking power of nature. Praise for Into the Storm “The story [Tristram] Korten tells is impressively multifaceted, exploring everything from timely issues such as climate change to timeless themes such as man’s struggle against the ocean’s fury.”—Miami New Times “Into the Storm is a triumph of reporting and you-are-there writing that becomes a deeper tale—with more implications about our own lives—with every chapter.”—Robert Kurson, New York Times bestselling author of Shadow Divers
