Wells in which humanity is "exalted" when a comet causes "the nitrogen of the air, the old azote," to "change out of itself" and become "a respirable gas, differing indeed from oxygen, but helping and sustaining its action, a bath of strength and healing for nerve and brain." This narrative is divided into three "books": Book I: The Comet; Book II: The Green Vapours; and Book III: The New World. Book I, recounts that William ("Willie") Leadford, "third in the office staff of Rawdon's pot-bank [a place where pottery is made] in Clayton," quits his job just as an economic recession caused by American dumping hits industrial Britain, and is unable to find another position. When his love Nettie jilts Leadford for the son and heir of the Verrall family, Leadford buys a revolver, intending to kill them both and himself. As this plot matures, a comet with an "unprecedented band in the green" in its spectroscopy looms gradually larger in the sky, eventually becoming brighter than the Moon. Just as Leadford is about to kill his rivals, the green comet enters the Earth's atmosphere and disintegrates, causing a soporific green fog. Book II opens with Leadford's awakening, in which he is acutely aware of the beauty in the world and his attitude toward others is one of generous fellow-feeling. The same effects occur in every human being, who accordingly re-organize human society. Book III concerns with an intense discussion by Verrall, Leadford, and Nettie, about their and humanities future. G. Wells, in his 1906 In the Days of the Comet uses the vapors of a comet to trigger a deep and lasting change in humanity's perspective on themselves and the world. In the build-up to a great war, poor student William Leadford struggles against the harsh conditions the lower-class live under. He also falls in love with a middle-class girl named Nettie. But when he discovers that Nettie has eloped with a man of upper-class standing, William struggles with the betrayal, and in the disorder of his own mind decides to buy a revolver and kill them both. All through this a large comet lights the night sky with a green glow, bright enough that the street lamps are left unlit.

Book excerpt: Of all the maritime titles produced by Ian Allan Publishing there is one--Ocean Ships--that has, over more than 40 years and numerous editions, been the most consistently successful and most regularly requested. Providing the reader with detailed information on the world's ocean going ships, the book is the 'Bible' of maritime enthusiasts worldwide. Listing a total of some 5,000 ships, from the greatest names in the cruise business such as the Queen Elizabeth 2 and the Oriana to the least known tankers and cargo vessels, this 2004 edition of the book has been fully revised and reillustrated. The new edition reflects the continuing boom in the international cruise business with new vessels either delivered or ordered by many of the world's major cruise lines. Amongst liners to be incorporated in this 2004 edition is the new flagship of Cunard--the Queen Mary 2--which will enter service during the course of the year. Listed according to the shipping line that owns them, each entry provides information on flag of registration, weight, year of construction, former names and much else. Information is also provided on the funnel colour of each shipping line and hull colour schemes.
Download or read book Across the Paciific written by Peter Plowman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, author Peter Plowman describes the Australian and New Zealand ocean liners/companies that traversed the Pacific. The main North American ports were San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. The Pacific Mail Steamship Company was the first to instigate regular operations, with the route later taken over by the Oceanic Steamship Company. This in turn became the Matson Line with its famous liners the Mariposa and the Monteray. With its meticulous research and photographs, the book details the liners, changes of names, changes of ownership, voyages, and the liners' eventual fates. It also documents the history of liners that were requisitioned in both World War I and World War II. The book's front cover shows the Tahiti, which travelled the San Francisco to Sydney route, and the Aorangi, which travelled the Vancouver route.
Download or read book Transatlantic written by Stephen Fox and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2004-06-29 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, the roughest but most important ocean passage in the world lay between Britain and the United States. Bridging the Atlantic Ocean by steamship was a defining, remarkable feat of the era. Over time, Atlantic steamships became the largest, most complex machines yet devised. They created a new transatlantic world of commerce and travel, reconciling former Anglo-American enemies and bringing millions of emigrants who transformed the United States. In Transatlantic, the experience of crossing the Atlantic is re-created in stunning detail from the varied perspectives of first class, steerage, officers, and crew. The dynamic evolution of the Atlantic steamer is traced from Brunel's Great Western of 1838 to Cunard's Mauretania of 1907, the greatest steamship ever built.
Download or read book A Man and His Ship written by Steven Ujifusa and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fascinating historical account…A snapshot of the American Dream culminating with this country’s mid-century greatness” (The Wall Street Journal) as a man endeavors to build the finest, fastest, most beautiful ocean liner in history. The story of a great American Builder at the peak of his power, in the 1940s and 1950s, William Francis Gibbs was considered America’s best naval architect. His quest to build the finest, fastest, most beautiful ocean liner of his time, the SS United States, was a topic of national fascination. When completed in 1952, the ship was hailed as a technological masterpiece at a time when “made in America” meant the best. Gibbs was an American original, on par with John Roebling of the Brooklyn Bridge and Frank Lloyd Wright of Fallingwater. Forced to drop out of Harvard following his family’s sudden financial ruin, he overcame debilitating shyness and lack of formal training to become the visionary creator of some of the finest ships in history. He spent forty years dreaming of the ship that became the SS United States. William Francis Gibbs was driven, relentless, and committed to excellence. He loved his ship, the idea of it, and the realization of it, and he devoted himself to making it the epitome of luxury travel during the triumphant post-World War II era. Biographer Steven Ujifusa brilliantly describes the way Gibbs worked and how his vision transformed an industry. A Man and His Ship is a tale of ingenuity and enterprise, a truly remarkable journey on land and sea.
