Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Days of Queen Elizabeth OF all the sovereigns that have worn the crown of England, Queen Elizabeth is the most puz zling, the most fascinating, the most blindly praised, and the most unjustly blamed. To make lists of her faults and virtues is easy. One may say with little fear of contradiction that her in tellect was magnificent and her vanity almost in credibly childish; that she was at one time the most outspoken of women, at another the most untruthful; that on one occasion she would mani fest a dignity thalz was truly sovereign, while on another the rudeness; of filler: manners was un worthy oi even the ageein which she lived. Some times she was the strongest oi these strong, some times the weakest oi the weak. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Loyal Hearts and True: A Tale of the Days of Queen Elizabeth And to be benighted in the New Forest, and forced to encamp there with a wounded comrade and no provisions, on a'chill evening in March, was no pleasant prospect, even for one pretty well inured to hardship. Already they had had rough experience of the treatment to which an unwary traveller might be exposed; and as the town of Romsey, could not be very far distant, it seemed advisable to push onwards if possible, and either halt there for the night, or at least strive to gain some small inn, or even some woodman's cabin, where they would have a roof over their heads, and some sort of bed for the wounded lad. Book Queen Elizabeth Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Elizabeth During her father's life Elizabeth lived chiefly at Hatfield with her brother Edward, under a governess. Henry had been empowered by Parliament in 1536 to settle the succession by his will. In 1544 be caused an Act to be passed placing Mary and Elizabeth next in order of succession after Edward. By his will, made a few days before his death, he repeated the provisions of the Act of 1544, and placed next to Elizabeth the daughters of his younger sister, the Duchess of Suffolk, tacitly passing over his elder sister, the Queen of Scotland. After her father's death (jan. 1547) Elizabeth, then a girl of thirteen, went to reside with the Queen Dowager Catherine, who had not been many weeks a widow before she married her old lover Thomas Seymour, the Lord Admiral, brother of the Protector Somerset, described as fierce in courage, courtly in fashion, in personage stately, in voice magnificent, but somewhat empty of matter. The romping that soon began to go on between this dangerous man and Elizabeth was of such a nature that early in the next year Catherine found it necessary to send her away somewhat abruptly. From that time she resided chiefly at Hatfield. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Queen Elizabeth s Book of Oxford

Download or read book Queen Elizabeth s Book of Oxford written by Bodleian Library and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queen Elizabeth's Book of Oxford was made in 1566 as a gift for Elizabeth I on the occasion of her first royal visit to Oxford. It was made, however, not just out of reverence for the Queen, but with the aim of getting her to endow the foundation of a new college. This sophisticated tour guide is presented as a dialogue between the Queen and her guide, in which the monarch asks questions which allow the guide to extol the generosity of the founders of each college they visit. The book failed. Queen Elizabeth founded no new institutions, but the exercise has left us with a fascinating insight into ideas of patronage and endowment in Elizabeth's day. This unique manuscript contains a Latin verse account of the famous buildings of the University illustrated by a series of beautiful pen drawings, and conceived by its scholarly producers as an imaginary progress through these locations. The complete manuscript is now made available for the first time in actual-size facsimile with full-text translation, a commentary on the images, and an analytical essay which places the manuscript in its historical context.

Book Two Historical Plays on the Life and Reign of Queen Elizabeth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Two Historical Plays on the Life and Reign of Queen Elizabeth Classic Reprint written by Thomas Heywood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Historical Plays on the Life and Reign of Queen Elizabeth The first part, (which we may call The Troubles of Queen Elizabeth as it has come down to us, can only be considered the fragment of a play, and, upon evidence we shall adduce presently, we may assume that it found its way to the press by means of short hand notes, taken m the theatre while the drama was in a course of representation. Why the author did not think it worth while, in any subsequent impression, to render it more complete, we know not. The second part, which deals with the events of Elizabeth's reign, as our readers will perceive, is much more perfect, and runs out to a much greater length: from that, we feel persuaded, nothing important was omitted. When, therefore, Heywood printed, in his Pleasant Dialogues and Dramas, 8vo, 1637, (p. 248) the follow ing Prologue and Epilogue, he must have intended them, and the introduction to them, to apply only to the first part, The Troubles of Queen Elizabeth, beginning in her minority, and ending with her accession to the royal throne, a potent Queen, in November, 1558. She was launched in September 1938, the largest passenger liner built at the time and for many years after. Entering service as a troopship in World War II, she had a successful career before retiring in 1968 after which she was sold to a Hong Kong businessman with plans to convert her into a floating university. But it was not to be and she was capsized in a mysterious fire in the harbor in 1972, a bizarre end for an elegant liner. Andrew Britton presents a wealth of unpublished photographic material and ephemera, even including the original purchase receipt, to tell the story of this historic liner. This evocative book offers a treat for all ocean liner fans.
