Book excerpt: (Limited Collector's Edition - 150) This is an art book: oil paintings with accompanying scripture verses presented as a 365 daily devotional. The Spirit and the Brush is a collection of 124 paintings, along with several drawings, created over the past decade. They are arranged to guide the reader through a year of contemplation that echoes nature's life cycles: Spring's revival, birth, and joy; Summer's celebration and whimsy; Autumn's color, abundance, and bounty; and Winter's sleepy embrace encouraging rest and solace in the stark and beautiful landscape. Each image pairs with three scriptures (one per calendar day, leap year excluded). Guided by my daily contemplations and prayers, the scriptures are determined once a piece is completed. The selected passages embody the emotional and thematic direction of the work with the intention of bringing a deeper meaning of context and contemplation to the visual experience. Selected works meet three criteria: an intimate connection with a place I've been and an experience I had; an aesthetic level that I am at peace with; and a strong emotional context. Landscapes are interspersed with still lifes-often created during the cold of winter-that have a direct correlation to the bounty of the scene. I encourage you to find a quiet place of respite each day and ponder the images, consider the passages, and find your own connection to God's Word and His creations.Whether artist, lover of art, lover of the landscape, person of prayer or curious seeker, I hope you find peace and love when opening the book. I pray my efforts humbly point to God.... with Humility comes Wisdom.Proverbs 11:2

Book The Pen and the Brush

Download or read book The Pen and the Brush written by Anka Muhlstein and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scintillating glimpse into the lives of acclaimed writers and artists and their inspiring, often surprising convergences, from the author of Monsieur Proust's Library With the wit and penetration well known to readers of Anka Muhlstein’s previous books, The Pen and the Brush revisits the delights of the French novel. This time she focuses on late 19th- and 20th-century writers--Balzac, Zola, Proust, Huysmans, and Maupassant--through the lens of their passionate involvement with the fine arts. She delves into the crucial role that painters play as characters in their novels, which she pairs with an exploration of the profound influence that painting exercised on the novelists' techniques, offering an intimate view of the intertwined worlds of painters and writers at the time. Muhlstein's deftly chosen vignettes bring to life a portrait of the nineteenth century's tight-knit artistic community, where Cézanne and Zola befriended each other as boys and Balzac yearned for the approval of Delacroix. She leads the reader on a journey of spontaneous discovery as she explores how a great painting can open a mind and spark creative fire.

Book excerpt: Oil sketches by Peter Paul Rubens—created at speed and in the heat of invention with a colorful loaded brush—convey all the spontaneity of the great Flemish painter’s creative process. This ravishing book draws from both private and public collections to present in full color 40 of Rubens’s oil sketches. Viewers will find in these informal paintings an enchanting intimacy and gain a new appreciation of Rubens’s capacity for invention and improvisation, and of his special genius for dramatic design and coloristic brilliance. The book investigates the role of the oil sketch in Rubens’s work; the development of the artist’s themes and narratives in his multiple sketches; and the history of the appreciation of his oil sketches. It also explores some of the unique aspects of his techniques and materials. By revealing the oil sketches as the most direct record of Rubens’s creative process, the book presents him as the greatest and most fluent practitioner of this vibrant and vital medium.

Book In the Brush Old Time Social Political and Religious Life in the Southwest

Download or read book In the Brush Old Time Social Political and Religious Life in the Southwest written by Hamilton Wilcox Pierson and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a visit to New York, many years ago, after the first few months of my ministerial labors in the wilds of the Southwest, I met a warm personal friend, a genial, generous, noble Christian woman, who at once said to me: "And so you are a Western missionary. Well, do tell me if anything strange or funny ever did happen to a missionary. Mother has taken the home-missionary papers ever since I was a child, and I always read them; and I often wonder if anything strange or funny did ever happen to a Western missionary." I had recently spent three happy years in the Union Theological Seminary in that city, and had come back to attend the heart-stirring anniversaries, held in those days in the old Broadway Tabernacle, and to meet again the many friends who had followed me in my labors with their kind wishes and their prayers. Though nearly thirty years have passed since I received that greeting, I have never forgotten, and have very often recalled it. And I have as often thought that it was most natural that the churches and people at large who send forth and sustain the heroic laborers who are toiling in the varied departments of Christian effort in our newer States and Territories, should desire a much fuller account of their daily lives and labors. As many of them travel extensively, and see pioneer border-life in all its aspects and phases, I have thought it most natural and reasonable that the people should desire to know more of their adventures; more of their contact with the rough, whole-souled people with whom they so often meet and mingle; more of that strange compound of energy, recklessness, and daring, the hardy hosts who erect their log-cabins and fell the forests in the van of our American civilization, in its triumphant westward march. Only one day in seven is set apart as sacred time, and only a few hours of that day are devoted to what are generally regarded as spiritual duties. A description of these duties alone, whether performed on Sabbath-days or week-days, is a very inadequate description of missionary life as a whole. In order to perform these duties, a man must eat and drink, take care of his body, mingle with the world, and meet all his responsibilities as a man and a citizen. In the pages that follow it will be my purpose to present a portraiture of ministerial life in the wilds of the Southwest, in all its aspects and phases, exactly as I found it. I shall attempt to portray week-day life as well as Sunday life. I shall describe scenes of wonderful and thrilling religious interest, and the most common and homely incidents of every-day life, and, as far as possible, give an idea of my life as a whole. I shall attempt to describe the politicians, preachers, and people; the country in which they live, their manners and customs, their barbecues, basket-meetings, and weddings, and all the peculiarities of their open, free, and genial home-life in its social, political, and religious aspects and relations. In this I shall be successful only so far as I succeed in perfectly describing their life and my own during the many years that I mingled with them. My lady friend and questioner, to whom I have referred, was slightly mistaken in calling me a "missionary." I was not one in name. At the time of my graduation from the Theological Seminary, I was under appointment as a missionary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to West Africa; but hæmorrhages from my lungs prevented my entrance upon that work.

Book excerpt: "Chinese ink painting is one of the oldest continually practiced art forms in the world. It first appeared in China in the fifth century, and soon traveled to Korea and then to Japan. As old and deeply rooted in East Asian aesthetics and meditation as it is, ink painting is credited with influencing the development of Western modern art. Its minimalist approach to painting continues to have enormous appeal. Artist and teacher Sungsook Setton, who learned the techniques with Chinese and Korean masters in her native South Korea, brings new excitement to this age-old art. While teaching the traditional disciplines for holding and using the brush, she shows students how to turn the techniques and inner meditation toward interpreting their own world: city views, music, and the essence of contemporary life"--

Download or read book The Brush and the Pen written by Dario Gamboni and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French symbolist artist Odilon Redon (1840–1916) seemed to thrive at the intersection of literature and art. Known as “the painter-writer,” he drew on the works of Poe, Baudelaire, Flaubert, and Mallarmé for his subject matter. And yet he concluded that visual art has nothing to do with literature. Examining this apparent contradiction, The Brush and the Pen transforms the way we understand Redon’s career and brings to life the interaction between writers and artists in fin-de-siècle Paris. Dario Gamboni tracks Redon’s evolution from collaboration with the writers of symbolism and decadence to a defense of the autonomy of the visual arts. He argues that Redon’s conversion was the symptom of a mounting crisis in the relationship between artists and writers, provoked at the turn of the century by the growing power of art criticism that foreshadowed the modernist separation of the arts into intractable fields. In addition to being a distinguished study of this provocative artist, The Brush and the Pen offers a critical reappraisal of the interaction of art, writing, criticism, and government institutions in late nineteenth-century France.
