The first part of the book (Solidarities) provides different theoretical approaches to the conception and exploration of solidarity that depart from the traditional and dominant perspectives within which debates about solidarity take place. This part includes chapters on the origins of the concept of solidarity in French social thought in the nineteenth century; a critical discussion of the later Foucault’s augmentation of his concerns with a critical politics of difference with a politics of parrhesia; Theodor Adorno and the identitarian logic that underpins reconciliation between difference and solidarity in initiatives such as multiculturalism; Alisdair MacIntyre and his rearticulation of Aristotelian virtue ethics to explore the value of solidarity ingrained in the practice of politics as a means of developing solidarity; and a transitional chapter that explores the social function of postcolonial theory. The second part of the book (Social Function) seeks to explore particular cases in which solidarity is constituted. The cases are diverse in global location, level of association, focus on cultural, political and policy contexts, and different approaches to analysis. As such, they provide a set of cases from which different aspects of the problems of making and remaking solidarity can be explored. These chapters include a case study in Israel exploring solidarity and social cohesion through migration, globalisation, and modernising processes; a case study of the African Village Market in Sydney, Australia; an example of the complexities of solidarity and identity in the Slovene context; and an exploration of how state action in Turkey dissolves solidarity in a community through urban housing policies.

Most learned about the situation from missionaries who had worked in the area and witnessed the repression firsthand. These missionaries, Sharon Erickson Nepstad shows, employed the institutional and cultural resources of Christianity to seize the attention of American congregations and remind them of the moral obligations of their faith. Drawing on archival data and in-depth interviews with activists in ten separate solidarity organizations around the country, Nepstad offers a rich analysis of the experiences of religious leaders and church members in the solidarity movement. She explores the moral meaning of protest and the ways in which clergy used religious rituals, martyr stories, and biblical teachings to establish a link between faith and activism. She looks at the factors that transformed missionaries into skilled leaders who were able to translate the Central American conflicts into Christian themes and a religious language familiar to U.S. congregations. She also offers insights into the unique challenges of organizing on the transnational level and shows how the solidarity movement made U.S. policy towards Central America one of the most hotly contested issues in American politics during the 1980s. Unpacking the implications of her study for the field of collective action, Nepstad stresses the importance of the individual human agents who shape, and are shaped by, the structures and cultures in which they operate. She argues that working in and through the church gave supporters of solidarity moral credibility as well as a rich source of symbolic, human, and material resources that enabled them to reach across national boarders, motivating others to act upon their deeply held moral convictions. Shedding new light on the genesis and evolution of this important activist movement, Convictions of the Soul will be of interest to students and scholars of social movements, religion, and politics.

Iton argues that the failure of the American Left lies in its inability to come to grips with the centrality of race in the American experience. Book excerpt: "Latinx Catholics have used Our Lady of Guadalupe as a symbol in democratic campaigns ranging from the United Farm Workers movement to the Chicano movement to the movement for just immigration reform. In diverse ways, these groups use Guadalupe's symbol and narrative to make claims about justice in society's basic structures (law, policy, institutions, for example) while seeking to generate greater participation and representation in US democracy. Yet, Guadalupe is illegible within a liberal political framework that seeks to protect society's basic structures from religious encroachment by relegating religious speech, practices, and symbols to the realm of the background culture. In response to this problem, religious ethicists have argued for expansions of the liberal framework that would make religious language, arguments, and practices communities legible within a pluralistic society without capitulating to anti-democratic modes of governance that undermine pluralism. What remains unexplored is the way that the aesthetic dimensions of particular religious traditions can be engaged toward cultivating a more participatory democracy that invites substantive contributions to society's common life from religious people and communities. Instead, in conversation with political liberalism, Latinx theological aesthetics, and Catholic social thought, The Aesthetics of Solidarity examines the use of particular religious symbols to make democratic claims and generate greater participation and presence in the life of US democracy. After evaluating liberalism's capacity for constructive engagement with religion toward strengthening democratic participation, the project employs Latinx theological aesthetics and Catholic social thought to offer a constructive framework for interpreting religious symbols in the context of a religiously pluralistic and participatory democratic life"--
