Book excerpt: Results of initial proof of principle laboratory testing activities successfully demonstrated the viability of the in situ chemical treatment approach for remediation of soil and groundwater contaminated by hexavalent chromium. Testing activities currently in progress further indicate that soils contaminated with hexavalent chromium and uranium at concentrations of several hundred parts per million can be successfully treated with 100 ppM hydrogen sulfide gas mixtures. Greater than 90% immobilization of hexavalent chromium and 50% immobilization of uranium have been achieved in these tests after a treatment period of one day. Activities associated with further development and implementation of the in situ chemical treatment approach include conducting additional bench scale tests with contaminated geomedia, and undertaking scale-up laboratory tests and a field demonstration. This report discusses the testing and further development of this process.

Hexavalent chromium, highly soluble in water, is considered as an environmental and health hazard, classified as a group A human carcinogen. In this research, the feasibility was performed to study the possibility of remediation of chromium contaminated soil by ex-situ vitrification and to evaluate reuse potential of vitrified products as highway construction aggregate. A series of physical and chemical analysis was conducted on nine soil samples collected from different chromium contaminated sites. Results were analyzed for their compatibility for vitrification. Sand and carbon were added to enhance vitrification process. Vitrification was performed and the vitrified products were subjected to further chemical and physical tests. TCLP chromium concentration results verified a successful remediation. The vitrified product properties complied with the New Jersey Department of Transportation standards, designating high reuse potential.

Book excerpt: Laboratory scale soil treatment tests have been conducted as part of an effort to develop and implement an in situ chemical treatment approach to the remediation of chromate-contaminated soils through the use of reactive gases. These tests involved three different soil samples that were contaminated with Cr(VI) at the 200 ppM level. Treatment of the contaminated soils was performed by passing 100 ppM and 2000 ppM concentrations of hydrogen sulfide in nitrogen through soil columns until a S:Cr mole ratio of 10:1 was achieved. The treated soils were then leached with groundwater or deionized water and analyzed to assess the extent of chromium immobilization. Test results indicate>90% immobilization of chromium and demonstrate that the treatment process is irreversible. Ongoing developmental efforts are being directed towards the demonstration and evaluation of the gas treatment approach in a field test at a chromate-contaminated site. Major planned activities associated with this demonstration include laboratory testing of waste site soil samples, design of the treatment system and injection/extraction well network, geotechnical and geochemical characterization of the test site, and identification and resolution of regulatory and safety requirements.

In this study, the in situ bioremediation technology for treating Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater aquifers was evaluated using a laboratory microcosm system. The study was conducted using columns with five equally spaced intermediate sampling ports along the length to facilitate finite difference modelling of the Cr(VI) concentration profile within the column. Cr(VI) concentration was continuously measured in the influent, in five equally spaced intermediate ports within the column and in the effluent port. The change or the shift in microbial community within the inoculated column was also monitored due to exposure to toxic conditions after seven weeks of operation using the 16S rRNA genotype fingerprinting method. The effect of introducing a natural carbon source (sawdust) in inoculated columns in comparison with the performance of sterile controls under various loading conditions was also evaluated. Near complete Cr(VI) removal was achieved in an inoculated carbon source reactor, whereas only 69.5% of Cr(VI) removal was achieved in an inoculated column without an added carbon source after 4 days of operation at 20 mg/L. In a sterile control reactor less than 2% of Cr(VI) was removed after 4 days of operation at 20 mg/L. Experimental cores demonstrated a successful Cr(VI) reduction process in the simulated microbial barrier system that was evaluated internally. The model that simulates Cr(VI) removal and transport in the subsoil environment was developed. The Cr(VI) mass balance model across the reactor that accounts for the flow characteristics and biological removal mechanism successfully captured the trends of Cr(VI) response profiles under quasi-steady state conditions for different loading conditions. This study demonstrate the potential of applying effective Cr(VI) reducers in the reactive barrier systems to contain or attenuate the spread of Cr(VI) contaminant in groundwater aquifer systems. The finite difference model developed in this study to evaluate the behaviour of Cr(VI) in the reactor could contribute towards improved designs of future in situ bioremediation systems that can be implemented for remediation of Cr(VI) on site.
