Book High Temperature Gas Solid Reactions in Earth and Planetary Processes

Download or read book High Temperature Gas Solid Reactions in Earth and Planetary Processes written by Penelope King and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High temperature gas-solid reactions are ubiquitous on planetary bodies, distributing chemical elements over a range of geologic settings and temperatures. This volume reviews the critical role gas-solid reactions play in early solar system formation, volcanism, metamorphism and industrial processes. The field evidence, experimental and theoretical approaches for examining gas-solid reaction are presented, building on advances in fields outside of Earth Sciences. Computational chemistry techniques are used to probe the nature of molecular clusters and solvation in volcanic vapors and mineral-gas reaction mechanisms. Specialised analytical methods for characterising solid reaction products are included since these reactions commonly form thin or dispersed films and metastable minerals. Finally, the volume contains rich field examples, laboratory experiments and thermodynamic modelling and kinetics of gas-solid reactions on Earth, Venus and beyond.

Book Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering

Download or read book Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present the detection of volatile organic compounds directly in their vapor phase by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates based on lithographically-defined two-dimensional rectangular array of nanopillars. The type of nanopillars is known as the tapered pillars. For the tapered pillars, SERS enhancement arises from the nanofocusing effect due to the sharp tip on top. SERS experiments were carried out on these substrates using various concentrations of toluene vapor. The results show that SERS signal from a toluene vapor concentration of ppm level can be achieved, and the toluene vapor can be detected within minutes of exposing the SERS substrate to the vapor. A simple adsorption model is developed which gives results matching the experimental data. The results also show promising potential for the use of these substrates in environmental monitoring of gases and vapors.

Book Trace Analysis of Biological Compounds by Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering SERS Spectroscopy

Download or read book Trace Analysis of Biological Compounds by Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering SERS Spectroscopy written by Naresh Kumar Boddu and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is a sensitive analytical technique, which extends its applications to the detection of substances at low concentration levels. SERS spectroscopy measurements were performed on adenine and rhodamine 6G on silver and gold colloids to evaluate the linearity at low analyte concentrations and at different time intervals. The maximum intensity for adenine was observed at Raman shifts of 728 cm-1 and 1318 cm-1 and the maximum intensity for R6G was observed at Raman shifts of 1352 cm-1 and 1519 cm-1. These SERS measurements were compared with solution absorbance measurements at 650 nm and 900 nm. Raman enhancement factors have also been evaluated for each compound. The results of these studies demonstrate that SERS techniques provide high sensitivity and have the potential to detect a range of compounds in biological samples.

Book Determining the Electronic Properties of Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates

Download or read book Determining the Electronic Properties of Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates written by Liam David Whelan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) is an ultra-sensitive technique for optical detection of target analytes. Our work focuses on detecting oil in water using SERS, with this thesis using phenanthrene as a model compound. SERS is a technique which takes advantage of the optical properties of metal substrates to greatly increase the intensities of adsorbed analytes' vibrational modes. The rapid development of novel materials as SERS active substrates requires an efficient screening method. SERS Enhancement Factor (EF) does correlate somewhat with surface morphology and UV-Vis absorption, however we present a technique which shows an even stronger correlation and is ultimately a better screening tool: Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM). This technique maps the electronic properties of a substrate to its surface morphology. This thesis covers two classes of SERS substrates: annealed bimetallic systems and nanosphere patterned mono- and bimetallic systems. The ability to directly map the electronic properties of a substrate to its morphological properties is of critical importance in determining a key link between the macroscale SERS sensor response and the microscale substrate structure. Our major findings indicate that when Au/Cr nanostructured films' work function is near the calculated and experimental values for the HOMO-LUMO gap of the target analyte, phenanthrene, the observed SERS intensity reaches a maximum.

Book Detection of Molecular and Biomolecular Species by Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Nanoengineered Substrates for SERS Detection

Download or read book Detection of Molecular and Biomolecular Species by Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Nanoengineered Substrates for SERS Detection written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our research has confirmed that the significant Raman enhancement from a nanoshell based substrate is generated by the electromagnetic enhancement of individual nanoshells, not aggregates (dimers, trimers, etc.). Unlike metal colloids and roughened surfaces, the significant Raman enhancements achieved are consistent across the substrate and are not related to "hot spots" associated with aggregate geometries. This will allow the reproducible manufacture of a substrate with superior enhancement for use in future target specific SERS applications. The Raman enhancement achieved this individual nanoshell" substrate equals or exceeds 10 exp 10, evaluated using direct comparison between the unenhanced and enhanced signal from the same molecule. It is important to note that when these enhancements are compared to those of Kneipp et a., who reported values of 10 exp 10, the nanoshell-based enhancement appears to be approximately 10 exp 15 using their analytical method. The enhancement factors demonstrated are consistent with reported enhancements factors necessary for single molecule detection. Nanoshell-based SERS substrates have been reproducibly manufactured and tested for stability under various conditions. The method of manufacturing will allow use with both dry and aqueous samples.

Book Low Dimensional Systems Theory Preparation and Some Applications

Download or read book Low Dimensional Systems Theory Preparation and Some Applications written by Luis M. Liz-Marzán and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) Dynamic Interactions in Quantum Dot Systems held at Hotel Atrium in Puszczykowo, near Poznan, Poland, May 16-19,2002. The term low-dimensional systems, which is used in the title of this volume, refers to those systems which contain at least one dimension that is intermediate between those characteristic ofatoms/molecules and those ofthe bulk material. Depending on how many dimensions lay within this range, we generally speak of quantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots. As such an intermediate state, some properties of low-dimensional systems are very different to those of their molecular and bulk counterparts. These properties generally include optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, and all these are partially covered in this book. The main goal of the workshop was to discuss the actual state of the art in the broad area ofnanotechnology. The initial focus was on the innovative synthesis of nanomaterials and their properties such as: quantum size effects, superparamagnetism, or field emission. These topics lead us into the various field based interactions including plasmon- magnetic spin- and exciton coupling. The newer, more sophisticated methods for characterization of nanomaterials were discussed, as well as the methods for possible industrial applications. In general, chemists and physicists, as well as experts on both theory and experiments on nanosized regime structures were brought together, to discuss the general phenomena underlying their fields ofinterest from different points ofview.
