Book In situ Calibration of Detectors Using Muon induced Neutrons

Download or read book In situ Calibration of Detectors Using Muon induced Neutrons written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we investigate a method that confirms the operability of neutron detectors requiring neither radiological sources nor radiation generating devices. This is desirable when radiological sources are not available, but confidence in the functionality of the instrument is required. The "source", based on the production of neutrons in high-Z materials by muons, provides a tagged, low-background and consistent rate of neutrons that can be used to check the functionality of or calibrate a detector. Using a Monte Carlo guided optimization, an experimental apparatus was designed and built to evaluate the feasibility of this technique. Through a series of trial measurements in a variety of locations we show that gated muon-induced neutrons appear to provide a consistent source of neutrons (35.9 ± 2.3 measured neutrons/10,000 muons in the instrument) under normal environmental variability (less than one statistical standard deviation for 10,000 muons) with a combined environmental + statistical uncertainty of ~18% for 10,000 muons. This is achieved in a single 21-22 minute measurement at sea level.

Book A Method for in Situ Absolute DD Yield Calibration of Neutron Time of flight Detectors on OMEGA Using CR 39 based Proton Detectors

Download or read book A Method for in Situ Absolute DD Yield Calibration of Neutron Time of flight Detectors on OMEGA Using CR 39 based Proton Detectors written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron time of flight (nTOF) detectors are used routinely to measure the absolute DD neutron yield at OMEGA. To check the DD yield calibration of these detectors, originally calibrated using indium activation systems, which in turn were cross-calibrated to NOVA nTOF detectors in the early 1990s, a direct in situ calibration method using CR-39 range filter proton detectors has been successfully developed. By measuring DD neutron and proton yields from a series of exploding pusher implosions at OMEGA, a yield calibration coefficient of 1.09 ± 0.02 (relative to the previous coefficient) was determined for the 3m nTOF detector. In addition, comparison of these and other shots indicates that significant reduction in charged particle flux anisotropies is achieved when bang time occurs significantly (on the order of 500 ps) after the trailing edge of the laser pulse. This is an important observation as the main source of the yield calibration error is due to particle anisotropies caused by field effects. The results indicate that the CR-39-nTOF in situ calibration method can serve as a valuable technique for calibrating and reducing the uncertainty in the DD absolute yield calibration of nTOF detector systems on OMEGA, the National Ignition Facility, and laser megajoule.

Book High Energy Calibration of Scintillating Detectors with Thermal Neutrons

Download or read book High Energy Calibration of Scintillating Detectors with Thermal Neutrons written by Alexander Blecher and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Physics - Nuclear Physics, Molecular Physics, Solid State Physics, grade: 2,0, Technical University of Darmstadt (Institut fur Kernphysik), language: English, abstract: The NEPTUN tagger is a setup which uses LaBr3 detectors. The calibration of them is challenging since the channel-to-energy relation is not linear and energy drifts can occur. The quality of the calibration increases by using high-energy -ray sources. Neutron capture reactions (n, ) with lathanum, bromine and chlorine which provide energies up to 8.5MeV are investigated with experiments and simulations. A moderator can deaccelerate the neutrons and that is why it increases the cross section for these reactions. Therefore the moderator thickness is analysed for an polyethylene exemplary. A thickness between around 5 cm is indicated as best choice. The lanthanum and bromine in the detector provides sharp peaks, as shown in the experiments. Chlorine target adds additional peaks to the spectrum. It is now possible to build an efficient and compact calibration setup.

Book Designing and Testing the Neutron Source Deployment System and Calibration Plan for a Dark Matter Detector

Download or read book Designing and Testing the Neutron Source Deployment System and Calibration Plan for a Dark Matter Detector written by Shawn S. Westerdale and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we designed and tested a calibration and deployment system for the MiniCLEAN dark matter detector. The deployment system uses a computer controlled winch to lower a canister containing a neutron source into the detector where the neutron source pulses to produce calibration data. The winch then pulls the neutron source back out of the detector. We found that the deployment system position is precise to under 0.05 cm, one tenth of the minimum required precision. We designed a canister that will hold the neutron source during the calibration process. The canister will contain a dielectric gel to thermally and electrically insulate the high voltage electronics and the neutron source from the rest of the detector. We calculated the equilibrium temperature change of the calibration neutron source when it is turned on and found that the temperature increases by 92.6+isi K, corresponding to a rise in the dielectric gel height of 1.501i.9 cm. This temperature change is within the service temperature range of the dielectric gel; however, a more thermally conductive gel could still be used to reduce the temperature increase. We simulate the background external neutrons in MiniCLEAN and find that the addition of an air-filled calibration tube to the basic MiniCLEAN design has little effect on the external neutron background rate. Lastly, we simulate the calibration process in order to determine how long we must calibrate MiniCLEAN in order to obtain the desired 5% statistical precision on measurements of the calibration neutron-induced recoil spectrum. We found that a minimum of 2.48x 106 neutrons are needed to measure the total counts in the region of interest in energy to 5% (corresponding to a pulse mode calibration time of 124 seconds assuming that neutrons are produced at a rate of 105 per second), and 2.02x 107 neutrons are needed to achieve 5% measurements of the energy spectrum with 2 KeVee binning in the region of interest (corresponding to a time of 1005 seconds).

Book A Preliminary Calibration of Radial Neutron Time Of Flight Detectors on a Dense Plasma Focus

Download or read book A Preliminary Calibration of Radial Neutron Time Of Flight Detectors on a Dense Plasma Focus written by Jacquelynne Vaughan and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) detectors are commonly used for fast neutron detection on nuclear fusion plasma experiments in high energy density physics. The 4.6-kJ dense plasma focus (DPF) at UC San Diego can generate neutron yields of up to ~108. Two nTOF detectors radially situated at 1.3 m from the DPF are each composed of an EJ-204 plastic scintillator and an Hamamatsu R7724 photomultiplier tube. Several hundred experimental shots have been taken over the course of four different anode types. Of those, 203 shots with neutron data were selected to calibrate both nTOF detectors. A Be-activation detector generates absolute neutron yield data and has a lower detection limit of 1.1·106 neutrons. The latter is used to calibrate the signal areas in the nTOF data, and directly correlate those signal areas with the number of neutrons incident on the detector at its radius from the DPF. This preliminary analysis finds that the two nTOF detectors have approximate efficiencies of 8100 and 1700 photons per DD neutron, respectively. Further analysis can improve the correlation as well as investigate the cross-calibration between the two nTOF detectors more thoroughly.
