Book excerpt: The molecular structure of interphases between substrates such as metals and graphite and polymer systems cured against them was determined using surface analysis techniques such as reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and surface enhanced Raman scattering. It was found that the substrates had a significant effect on the molecular structure of the interphase and that the molecular structure of the interphase was significantly different from that of the bulk polymers. In some cases, there was a vigorous reaction between components of the polymer system and the substrate. Thus, when an acrylic adhesive was cured against silver substrates, o-benzoic sulfimide, a component of the curing system, segregated to the interface and reacted with metal ions to form salts. The salts reacted with a peroxide in the curing system to form radicals which initiated polymerization. In other cases, components of the polymer preferentially adsorbed onto the substrate. Thus the curing agent dicyandiamide was adsorbed at the interface between an epoxy and silver. The behavior of polyamic acids was strongly affected by substrates they were deposited on.

Yet, new techniques permit increasingly refined determination of polymer chemistry and morphol ogy_ The correlation of this knowledge with physical properties of polymers is helpful to planned synthesis of new products. The most prominent spectroscopic techniques through the forties and fifties were infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance and MOssbauer spectroscopy started making sig nificant contributions to polymer chemistry in the early sixties. Still more recently fluorescence spectroscopy and laser Raman spectroscopy have become readily appli cable to polymers and are contributing significantly to the understanding of the relationship between polymer structure and properties. Determination of the distribution of monomer se quences by molecular size has become possible through combined gel permeation chromatography and spectroscopic analysis. Fragments of polymers from chemical break down or from pyrolysis are further fractionated and structurally analyzed. The relationship between the chemistry of polymers and performance can be determined from changes in chemical structure and orientation after curing, degradation, or physical or thermal manipulation of the polymers.

Book excerpt: This thesis offers novel insights into the time-dependent structural evolution of polymers under deformation. In-situ tensile experiments at high-brilliance synchrotron sources allowed to characterize the material with unrivaled resolution in time and space. The strain-induced crystallization in natural rubber was studied by wide-angle X-ray diffraction. Special emphasis was put on the establishment of new structure-property relationships to give a more in-depth understanding of the mechanical performance of rubber parts, e.g. in tear fatigue loading. To this end, the kinetics of strain-induced crystallization were investigated, subjecting the material to high strain rates. The local structure around a crack tip was observed by scanning wide-angle X-ray diffraction. Ultra-small angle X-ray scattering served to study filled elastomers under deformation, from specially prepared model filler systems to industrially relevant carbon black filled rubbers. Other methods include electron microscopy coupled with in-situ tensile testing and optical dilatometry to examine cavitation in rubbers. The underlying theory as well as a literature review are covered by an extensive introductory chapter, followed by a description of the experimental techniques. The results are presented in more detail than in the original journal publications.

Modern polymer characterization techniques have been valuable in providing multiscale insight into the structure and properties, including molecular structure and morphology, and thermal and mechanical properties, respectively. However, these techniques have been performed postmortem or have limitations that are unsuitable for in-situ characterization. The latter hinders the complete understanding of dynamic mechanical responses in polymers and the corresponding fundamental molecular mechanisms. Therefore, this research aims to develop a novel experimental solid mechanics setup capable of loading elastomeric polymers at various strain rates while concurrently interrogating the sample with a bulk spectroscopic technique using terahertz waves. The resulting time and frequency domains data and the supporting micrographs, computational and analytical solutions, digital image correlation, and light-matter interaction analyses substantiate the validity of utilizing terahertz-based spectroscopy to capture the underlying molecular mechanisms of mechanically loaded polymers. Furthermore, the fundamental insight gained through the in-situ spatiotemporal characterization of dynamically loaded polymers will accelerate the development of shock-tolerant and impact-resistant materials.
