Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. - How did Adventists come to believe what they believe? How have those beliefs changed over the years? With compelling candor George Knight captures the ebb and flow of the doctrinal currents within Adventism, including controversies over the shut door, the law in Galatians at the 1888 General Conference, the Trinity, pantheism, Fundamentalism, the nature of Christ, and inspiration. The Adventist Church was founded by independent thinkers who would have disagreed with several of the church's current 27 fundamental beliefs. But over the years strength arose out of contention, and consensus out of debate. From William Miller to Desmond Ford, Knight catalogues the colorful personalities who shaped the discussion, and shows how God has led Adventism into a broader and deeper understanding of His eternal truth. - A Word to the Reader, A Note From the Author, List of Abbreviations, Chapter 1: The Dynamic Nature of "Present Truth", Present Truth: Fluid Rather Than Static, The Avoidance of Creedal Rigidity, The Pathway of Progressive Understanding, Chapter 2: Adventism Wasn't Born in a Vacuum, The Theological Roots of Adventism, Millennial Visions, Chapter 3: The Millerite Theological Foundation, Miller's Use of the Bible, Miller on the Second Advent, The First and Second Angels' Messages, The Seventh-Month Movement and the Great Disappointment, Chapter 4: What Is Adventist in Adventism? Download or read book IN SEARCH OF AN IDENTITY written by SOUMEN MITRA and published by Joydhak Prakashan. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on an unpublished M. Phil. Dissertation submitted to the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in 1988. At that time it was probably the first work of its kind, exploring the conjunction between the popularity of football in colonial Calcutta and the trajectories of indigenous nationalism, communalism and sub-regionalism. While subsequent years have seen a renewed interest in the theme of sporting enthusiasm in British India, the narrative delineation of popular football in Calcutta cannot ignore the historical processes which have shaped it.

Book excerpt: This volume traces the influences that have shaped the secondary school history curriculum during Hong Kong's prolonged political transition between the 1960s and the early 21st century, focusing especially on the relationship between history teaching and identity formation. The author's experience as a local history teacher during the mid-1990s made him conscious of the of peculiarities of the history curriculum at this time; in particular, the neglect in both syllabuses and textbooks of Hong Kong's own history, and the unique division between History and the entirely separate subject of Chinese History.

The masks he presents to the world are fashioned upon hisanticipations of judgments. This book uses the notion of identity to organie materials andthoughts about certain aspects of problems traditionally intriguing to socialpsychologists.

Book Carmen

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2016-08-01
  • ISBN : 9401202788
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Carmen written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Prosper Mérimée and Georges Bizet (with his librettists Meilhac and Halévy) brought the figure of the Spanish Carmen to prominence in the nineteenth century an astonishing eighty or so film versions of the story have been made. This collection of essays gathers together a unique body of scholarly critique focused on that Carmen narrative in film. It covers the phenomenon from a number of aspects: cultural studies, gender studies, studies in race and representation, musicology, film history, and the history of performance. The essays take us from the days of silent film to twenty-first century hip-hop style, showing, through a variety of theoretical and historical perspectives that, despite social and cultural transformations—particularly in terms of gender, sexuality and race—remarkably little has changed in terms of basic human desires and anxieties, at least as they are represented in this body of films. The conception of Carmen’s independent sexuality as a source of danger both to men (and occasionally women) and to respectable society has been a constant. Nor has sexual and ethnic otherness lost its appeal. On the other hand, the corpus of Carmen films is more than a simple recycling of stereotypes and each engages newly with the social and cultural issues of their time.
