'the booksellers of London, ' said Dr. Johnson, 'are generous, liberal-minded men, ' and the editors again beg to acknowledge most gratefully the ready kindness with which the publishers have permitted them to draw from books still pro tected by copyright. They therefore tender their thanks to Messrs. Macmillan, Smith Elder, Longmans, Murray, Methuen, Hutchinson, Dent, Duckworth, Blackwood, Grant Richards, Heinemann, Arnold, Fisher Unwin, Chapman and Hall, Allen, Parker and many others. More especially are they bound to render thanks to the Delegates of the Press of their own University, to whom their debt is indeed great. Like kindness has been shown by authors, and particularly would they make mention of Dr. Herbert Warren, Mr. A. D. Godley, Mr. Henry James, Mr. Max Beerbohm, Mr. Robert Ross, Mr. H. G. Wells, Mr. Lang, Mr. A. G. Little, Sir H. Maxwell Lyte, Mr. Barry Pain, Mr. G. L. Calderon, Professor Ashley, Mr. Ashton, k.c., Mr. Hilaire Belloc, Sir A. T. Quiller-couch, Mr. A. M. Others there are, both publishers and authors, to whom thanks are due, whose names the editors fear may not be included in these lists. For this, as well as for any neglect on their part, if neglect there has been, to obtain consent or approval, they ask forgiveness. They have also to thank Mr. P. E. Matheson of New College, Mr. Atlay, Mr. W. G. Waters, and Mr. Cyril Bailey of Balliol, for the kindly assistance they have given in regard to certain points. Download or read book Advances in Experimental Philosophy of Law written by Karolina Prochownik and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only recently have philosophers and psychologists begun to consider empirical research methods to inform questions and debates in legal philosophy. With the field ripe for further experimental inquiry, this collection explores the most topical empirical developments and anticipates future research directions. Bringing together legal scholars, psychologists, and philosophers, chapters address questions such as: Do people share a stable set of intuitions about what the law is? What are common perceptions about causation, intentionality, and culpability, and are they consistent with the corresponding legal concepts? To what extent can experimental research methods advance theoretical debates in legal philosophy about the nature of law? With fascinating implications for legal philosophy, ethics, and moral psychology, Advances in Experimental Philosophy of Law sets the agenda for the emerging field of experimental jurisprudence and will be of interest to both researchers and practitioners alike.

  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG

Download or read book Liberal Perfectionism written by Alexandra Couto and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the recent literature on political perfectionism has focused on dealing with objections to this view. This book adopts a different approach: It attempts to highlight the intuitive appeal of liberal perfectionism by presenting a positive prima facie argument in its favour. The book starts by clarifying the relation between political perfectionism — a conception of politics — and prudential perfectionism and ethical perfectionism — a conception of the good life, and a type of ethical theory. It is crucial to start by selecting a plausible form of ethical perfectionism, as it makes an important difference to the plausibility of the political conception based upon it. Once appropriate distinctions are drawn and a plausible form of liberal perfectionism is endorsed, many of the standard objections to perfectionism are shown to fail to reach their target. Different arguments in favour of liberal perfectionism are then proposed and critically examined, but the resilience of some pragmatic arguments against liberal perfectionism is conceded. The book ends by showing that perfectionism can be surprisingly relevant for discussions of social justice and proceeds to draw a sketch of the perfectionist implications for questions of distributive justice.

Book excerpt: For every major feast, saint’s day and commemoration in the calendars of the Anglican churches of the UK, this liturgical resource and spiritual companion offers a feast of readings that reflects the richness, depth and variety of the Christian tradition from the earliest years of the church to the present day. Writings from across the centuries represent the Eastern, Western, Roman and Celtic traditions and constitute a vibrant history of Christianity manifested in the lives of hundreds of holy men and women as diverse as first century martyrs, or twentieth century social reformers. A complementary volume to Exciting Holiness which provides scripture readings and prayers for the calendar, this is now updated to include the additional commemorations in the Church of England’s calendar of saints.
