Book excerpt: The genius of the young artist who has illustrated this book may be left to speak for itself, as it assuredly will: but I would say a word about the title, which is also of his invention. When Messrs. Hodder and Stoughton told me that Mr. Kay Nielsen wished to employ his pencil upon a volume of Fairy Tales, to be called In Powder and Crinoline, I answered that the title and the notion it conveyed were, in my opinion, capital; that no-one with forty-one volumes of the Cabinet des Fées on his shelves (to name that collection alone) ought to find any difficulty with Powder save the pleasant difficulty of choosing; but that if anyone knew where to find in the age of Crinoline a stock of such tales as we wanted I should be obliged by the information. There was no doubt they ought to exist, but I doubted very much if they did. -- Preface.

Book Twelve Dancing Princesses

Download or read book Twelve Dancing Princesses written by and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1974-03-22 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred David and Mary Elizabeth Meek have compiled a collection of fairy tales that ranges from the Grimm brothers' inimitable recreations of archetypal folktales to the modern prose charm of James Thurber's Many Moons. The appeal of the stories is wide and varied: the refined intelligence of Perrault, the wondrous imagination of Andersen, the descriptive power of Ruskin, the bittersweet melancholy of Wilde. These are but a few of the artists represented in this remarkably inclusive selection of works from Germany, Russia, France, Scandinavia, England, and America. Many are in new translations in the modern idiom and all testify eloquently to the unceasing vitality of this literary genre.

Download or read book The Corset and the Crinoline written by William Barry Lord and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an invaluable treatise on corsets and crinoline. Popular mainly in the 1800s, the corset is a woman's tightly fitting undergarment worn to shape the figure, and the crinoline is a stiff petticoat used to hold out a woman's skirt. This work presents the history of these pieces of clothing, their construction, use, and their impact on shaping the body. In addition, the writer aimed to provide the readers with all the essential information about the harm corsets can cause to women's bodies as they mold their waist and restrict their moment for as long as they're wearing them. This work talks about how one can acquire the desirable without causing any injury to the health.

Book The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen Illustrated by Kay Nielsen

Download or read book The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen Illustrated by Kay Nielsen written by Hans Christian Andersen and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1924, this collection The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen is illustrated with the magnificent Art Nouveau colour illustrations of Kay Nielsen. It was a project that took Nielsen twelve years to complete, and his illustrations perfectly capture the other-worldly spirit of Andersen's subject matter. It includes such well-known and loved tales as 'The Snow Queen', 'The Real Princess', 'The Hardy Tin Soldier' and 'The Nightingale.' Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children's stories but perhaps best known for his fables and fairy tales – meant for both adults and children. They were frequently written in a colloquial style, using idioms and spoken language in a manner previously unseen in Danish literature. Though simple at first glance, the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen often convey sophisticated moral teachings; in equal measure heart-breaking and heart-warming. Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) was a Danish illustrator of the golden age of illustration. He was influenced by Japanese art and the Swedish folklore – becoming a crucial participant in the Art Nouveaux movement. His art is characterised by long, swooping lines, open spaces and a certain macabre, yet ephemeral quality. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Andersen's masterful storytelling.

This collection of the Brothers Grimm Stories brings together some of their best known and loved tales, such as: ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘The Valiant Little Tailor’, ‘Rapunzel’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ and ‘The Golden Goose’. Book excerpt: The classic pacifist novel by a major Polish writer, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize At the beginning of the twentieth century the villagers of the Carpathian mountains lead a simple life, much as they have always done. Among them is Piotr, a bandy-legged peasant, who wants nothing more from life than an official railway cap, a cottage, and a bride with a dowry. But then the First World War reaches the mountains and Piotr is drafted into the army. All the weight of imperial authority is used to mould him into an unthinking fighting machine, forced to fight a war he does not understand, for interests other than his own. The Salt of the Earth is a classic war novel and a powerfully pacifist tale about the consequences of war for ordinary men.

Book Everyday Jewish Life in Imperial Russia

Download or read book Everyday Jewish Life in Imperial Russia written by ChaeRan Y. Freeze and published by Brandeis University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes accessibleÑfor the first time in EnglishÑdeclassified archival documents from the former Soviet Union, rabbinic sources, and previously untranslated memoirs, illuminating everyday Jewish life as the site of interaction and negotiation among and between neighbors, society, and the Russian state, from the beginning of the nineteenth century to World War I. Focusing on religion, family, health, sexuality, work, and politics, these documents provide an intimate portrait of the rich diversity of Jewish life. By personalizing collective experience through individual life storiesÑreflecting not only the typical but also the extraordinaryÑthe sources reveal the tensions and ruptures in a vanished society. An introductory survey of Russian Jewish history from the Polish partitions (1772Ð1795) to World War I combines with prefatory remarks, textual annotations, and a bibliography of suggested readings to provide a new perspective on the history of the Jews of Russia.
