Book Predicting Perceptions Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Appearance

Download or read book Predicting Perceptions Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Appearance written by Stefano Padilla and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-05-03 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and appearance lies in the mind of the observer. The latter is playing an increasingly important role in nearly all of our buying decisions: it informs us as to the quality of an automobile cabin, the desirability of an iPhone, the handle of a woollen sweater - the list is endless.Given the exponential rise in internet commerce and the ubiquity of smart devices, the ability to predict buyers' perceptions formed from interaction with digital media is maybe more important than those obtained by handling the real article. Thus, the science of appearance metrology is becoming increasingly critical. It concerns the development of methodologies, procedures, and equipment which allow us to predict observers' perceptions. The field is therefore highly multidisciplinary: physical measurement, psychophysics, media generation, image processing, statistics, and vision science. This book is a compilation of recent research relating to perception and appearance.

Book excerpt: The much-acclaimed BookTok sensation, Olivie Blake's The Atlas Six--now newly revised and edited with additional content. • The tag #theatlassix has millions of views on TikTok • A dark academic debut fantasy with an established cult following that reads like THE SECRET HISTORY meets THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY • The first in an explosive trilogy The Alexandrian Society, caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity, are the foremost secret society of magical academicians in the world. Those who earn a place among the Alexandrians will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams, and each decade, only the six most uniquely talented magicians are selected to be considered for initiation. Enter the latest round of six: Libby Rhodes and Nico de Varona, unwilling halves of an unfathomable whole, who exert uncanny control over every element of physicality. Reina Mori, a naturalist, who can intuit the language of life itself. Parisa Kamali, a telepath who can traverse the depths of the subconscious, navigating worlds inside the human mind. Callum Nova, an empath easily mistaken for a manipulative illusionist, who can influence the intimate workings of a person’s inner self. Finally, there is Tristan Caine, who can see through illusions to a new structure of reality—an ability so rare that neither he nor his peers can fully grasp its implications. When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they will have one year to qualify for initiation, during which time they will be permitted preliminary access to the Society’s archives and judged based on their contributions to various subjects of impossibility: time and space, luck and thought, life and death. Five, they are told, will be initiated. One will be eliminated. The six potential initiates will fight to survive the next year of their lives, and if they can prove themselves to be the best among their rivals, most of them will. Most of them. • Author : Nelson Goodman
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06

  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book The Structure of Appearance written by Nelson Goodman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this third edition of Nelson Goodman's The Structure of Appear ance, we are pleased to make available once more one of the most in fluential and important works in the philosophy of our times. Professor Geoffrey Hellman's introduction gives a sustained analysis and appreciation of the major themes and the thrust of the book, as well as an account of the ways in which many of Goodman's problems and projects have been picked up and developed by others. Hellman also suggests how The Structure of Appearance introduces issues which Goodman later continues in his essays and in the Languages of Art. There remains the task of understanding Good man's project as a whole; to see the deep continuities of his thought, as it ranges from logic to epistemology, to science and art; to see it therefore as a complex yet coherent theory of human cognition and practice. What we can only hope to suggest, in this note, is the b. road Significance of Goodman's apparently technical work for philosophers, scientists and humanists. One may say of Nelson Goodman that his bite is worse than his bark. Behind what appears as a cool and methodical analysis of the conditions of the construction of systems, there lurks a radical and disturbing thesis: that the world is, in itself, no more one way than another, nor are we. It depends on the ways in which we take it, and on what we do.

Book Methods for Appearance based Loop Closure Detection

Download or read book Methods for Appearance based Loop Closure Detection written by Emilio Garcia-Fidalgo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping and localization are two essential tasks in autonomous mobile robotics. Due to the unavoidable noise that sensors present, mapping algorithms usually rely on loop closure detection techniques, which entail the correct identification of previously seen places to reduce the uncertainty of the resulting maps. This book deals with the problem of generating topological maps of the environment using efficient appearance-based loop closure detection techniques. Since the quality of a visual loop closure detection algorithm is related to the image description method and its ability to index previously seen images, several methods for loop closure detection adopting different approaches are developed and assessed. Then, these methods are used in three novel topological mapping algorithms. The results obtained indicate that the solutions proposed attain a better performance than several state-of-the-art approaches. To conclude, given that loop closure detection is also a key component in other research areas, a multi-threaded image mosaicing algorithm is proposed. This approach makes use of one of the loop closure detection techniques previously introduced in order to find overlapping pairs between images and finally obtain seamless mosaics of different environments in a reasonable amount of time.

Book Appearance and Explanation

Download or read book Appearance and Explanation written by Kevin McCain and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We might think that appearances give a prima facie justification for belief. This is the foundation for Phenomenal Conservatism in epistemology. McCain and Moretti adapt this view by integrating it with the view that epistemic justification is a matter of explanatory relations between one's evidence and propositions supported by that evidence.--
