Book A Note Book in Northern Spain Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Note Book in Northern Spain Classic Reprint written by Archer M. Huntington and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Note-Book in Northern Spain In the present volume little has been attempted beyond a brief description of certain trips in the North of Spain, and the book, with few exceptions, is made up from notes by the way. Some care has been given to the preparation of the illustrations, many of which are from photographs specially taken, and it is hoped that few inaccuracies have crept into the text. The portion of the Peninsula described has been thought to lack somewhat of that romantic interest which has grown up for the South, but in Santiago, - the early Christian Cordova, - in the small Gallegan city, where, it is claimed, the bones of Saint James still lie; in Oviedo, Zaragoza, and the little-known towns of the Pyrenees, there is a wealth of tradition and local interest unsurpassed even in the South. The writer takes pleasure in expressing his great appreciation of the unceasing kindness and consideration received at the hands of Spaniards, - both friends and strangers, - in a series of journeys occupying many months. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Northern Spain IT is ill gleaning for a necessitous author when Ford and Borrow have been before him in the field, and I may not attempt to justify the appearance of these pages by the pretence that I have any fresh story to tell. Yet, if my theme be Old, it is at least still unhackneyed. The pioneers have done their work with unapproachable thoroughness, but the rank and file of the travelling public are follow ing but slackly in their train. Book Rambles in Spain Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rambles in Spain Classic Reprint written by John Driscoll Fitz-Gerald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Spain During 1909 these chapters appeared as a Reading Journey Through Spain, in The Chautauquan. In revising and expanding them for this volume it was deemed wise not to alter the slightly personal and didactic tone of the original version. As the author did not Visit the Northwest, nor the extreme West and Southwest of Spain, he has given no chapters on those sections. For the Northwest and West, however, the omission is not much to be regretted, as the reader may easily turn to the delightfully written and beautifully illustrated N ote Book in Northern Spain, by Mr. Archer M. Huntington. In the opinion of the pres ent writer, the long and interesting chapter upon the bull ring has not its equal in English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain and the Spaniards, in 1843, Vol. 1 Asturias, and Galicia, to Vigo, and then embark for England. We preferred the spring, because - although in Spain the weather is often very unsettled at that season, heavy rains interrupting the communi cation, rendering travelling uncertain and dis agreeable - with a limited time upon your hands, it is upon the whole the best; the vegetation is in its greatest beauty; the days are lengthening, and the weather improving; by regulating your movements, as I had planned, and moving north wards, you avoid the great heat, which in the southern provinces is considerable by the middle of June. Book The Renaissance Architecture of Central and Northern Spain

Download or read book The Renaissance Architecture of Central and Northern Spain written by Austin Whittlesey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renaissance Architecture of Central and Northern Spain: A Collection of Photographs and Measured Drawings Bungalow design in the Colonial style when properly planned possesses unusual charm and an air of refinement rarely found in any other style. This little Cape Cod house at once endears itself to the New Englander who has spent years in this environment. \vith all its simplicity, it is delightful in its home like appearance, its good proportions, and its harmony of simple Colonial details. It is adaptable to all regional or climatic conditions. Following the precedent of this type of house the living room is reached directly through the simple Colonial entrance doorway. As one enters the living room a charming view of the garden is obtained through the living room casement doors which open into the garden porch. In this plan the garden is featured so that the two principal rooms, the bedroom and the living room, overlook the garden. The kitchen is placed in the front of the house, and is reached through the service entrance, which is placed on the side. This entrance has direct communication with the kitchen, and also with the basement. Following the precedent of nearly all of the plans of this book, both the kitchen and basement may be reached without passing through any other portion of the house. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Summer in Spain That evening, however, the trains were again at a standstill. We therefore thought it best to go on to Biarritz, and wait for calmer times. There we were fortunate enough to meet friends coming out of Spain, who said they had found no difficulties to signify, and strongly urged us to go on. We were quite willing to follow this advice; the only obstacle was, that the trains did not go. There was nothing for it but to enjoy ourselves at Biarritz. Sketching, scrambling about the cliffs, and walking on the sands by that delicious green sea. So pleasant was it, that I think we were almost sorry when we were told that we could now have tickets for Spain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across the Country of the Little King: A Trip Through Spain The number of tourists availing themselves of the Southern or Mediterranean route is annually increasing. Many, taking advantage of the stop over privilege, land at Gibraltar and have a hurried but fairly satisfactory glimpse of Tan gier, Seville and Granada, While a goodly number leave the steamer at that port and pass by the route herein portrayed to the northern frontier, a journey of surpassing interest. The student or specialist may find the available literature on the subject satisfactory, but, to the ordinary traveller, Ford, Murray and O'shea are cumbersome, heavy and profuse. While not offered as a Guide-book, it is felt this modest volume will prove a pleasant and useful companion along the way, touching upon all the sights the bird of passage will care to see. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Pyrenees Into SpainThe Spanish nation is professedly devote; they forget while professing themselves Chris tians, that hospitality is especially inculcated by Christ, and Heaven itself held out as its reward I was a stranger, and ye took me in.' All, therefore, that this little volume can claim is to be a lively narrative of the scenes I passed through, and the people I met. If it meet from a discerning public as kind and generous a reception as its predecessor, I hope, ere long, to be once more a candidate for equal favour; and meanwhile, I meekly fold my arms, curtsey down to the very ground to the audience in pit and boxes, in grateful thanks for their favour, and hope the gods - i.e. The critics in the gallery - won't hiss me.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
