Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Workers in Nature's Workshop Nature's Workshop. Possibly many of my young readers, together with their teachers and parents, have not looked upon Nature Study from the point of view taken throughout these chapters, and it is therefore hoped that their interest and sym pathy with the lower orders of animate life will be enhanced. Many trades which we mortals follow have their counterparts in the functions of the higher animals, insects, and plants, but, whereas it takes us years of toil and in finite perseverance to learn even one trade thoroughly, our lowly workers seem to be fully equipped with the necessary knowledge when they are born into the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Log of the Sun: A Chronicle of Nature's Year Who follows the lines must expect to find moods as varying as the seasons; to face storm and night and cold, and all other delights of what wildness still remains to us upon the earth. Emphasis has been laid upon the weak points in our knowledge of things about us, and the principal desire of the author is to inspire enthusiasm in those whose eyes are just opening to the wild beauties of God's out-of - doors, to gather up and follow to the end some of these frayed out threads of mystery. Book In Nature s Realm Classic Reprint

Download or read book In Nature s Realm Classic Reprint written by Charles Conrad Abbott and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Nature's Realm My days - Elysian days to me - afield or afloat, were followed by nights no less delightful, when, at my desk, I again lived my happy hours. My entertainment, therefore, has been two-fold, and so I am moved to hope that the satisfaction of the reader who turns these pages to the light will at least be single-fold. Here, however, a word of caution. No book concerning Nature is in any sense a mirror reflecting every detail. The many subtle charms the rambler recognizes, when under the bright blue sky, are not brought home with him. He cannot pierce with a pencil-point many an impression as you may pin a butterfly. Here, too, let me call attention to the danger of being so far off our guard that confusion arises from a multiplicity of objects; all of commanding interest. Book Nature s Laws and the Making of Pictures Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nature s Laws and the Making of Pictures Classic Reprint written by William Lionel Wyllie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature's Laws and the Making of Pictures Perspective is the art of projecting upon a flat surface the image of any object, situated at any distance, so that it may present to the eye the same appearance with regard to its surroundings as does the real object. It is an exact science, and the truth of its rules can be demonstrated to absolute certainty so they can no more be ignored than can the multiplica tion table or the propositions of Euclid. Yet it is a fact that many artists, just because they have never taken the trouble to learn how to use these rules of perspective, abuse the whole subject call it a one-eyed science tell you that it has nothing to do with Art and even go so far as to say that, if you have to use paper and pencil to prove your case, you must be wrong. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature in Books: A Literary Introduction to Natural Science The scientific facts are, at first, of less importance than the cultivation of that interest in the phenomena of Nature which all boys and girls should (and most do) feel, and the formation of a habit of intelligent and accurate observation - a habit which is, indeed, less easy to acquire than is commonly supposed, but which involves a discipline scarcely, if at all, inferior to a properly conducted study of the classics. It is sometimes forgotten that around the study of the aspects and laws of Nature there is a literature which well deserves to be regarded as classical in the best sense of the word. Descriptions of Nature by writers like Shakespeare and Bacon, Wordsworth and Thomson, Izaak Walton and Gilbert White, again and again prove the fact; and their various testimonies to the abiding power in Nature to interest and elevate the mind have, therefore, been drawn upon in the preparation of the present work. Book Nature Study for the Common Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nature Study for the Common Schools Classic Reprint written by Wilbur S. Jackman and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Study for the Common Schools In the preparation of this book it has been the aim to furnish a guide for teachers in the common schools who wish their pupils to pursue an adequate and symmetrical course in Natural Science. Science teaching for a few years past has been gradually working itself downward from the colleges and high schools into those of lower grades, but, in most cases, the plans followed, while fairly well adapted to the demands of advanced pupils, have been but poorly fitted to the needs of beginners. The plan here adopted is based upon what is believed to be the proper interpretation of the character of the knowledge that the child can acquire. This knowledge may be characterized as having great breadth but little depth. The forces of nature impinge upon the child from every side, and he responds at once to their touch. Animal, plant, mineral, river, cloud, sunbeam, mountain, physical and chemical changes are all matters of equal and absorbing interest to him, and if left to himself he will inquire as freely about one as another. It is a mistaken idea that the child's interest is best aroused by a "thorough" study of a few living things, animal or plant, such as form the chief stock in trade in many school-rooms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Tamil poetic corpus of the Caṅam ("The Academy") is a national treasure for Tamilians and a battle-ground for linguists and historians of politics, culture and literature. Going back to oral predecessors probably dating back to the beginning of the first millennium, it has had an extremely rich and variegated history. Collected into anthologies and endowed with literary theories and voluminous commentaries, it became the centre-piece of the Tamil literary canon, associated with the royal court of the Pandya dynasty in Madurai. Its decline began in the late middle ages, and by the late 17th century it had fallen into near oblivion, before being rediscovered at the beginning of the print era. The present study traces the complex historical process of its transmission over some 2000 years, using and documenting a wide range of sources, in particular surviving manuscripts, the early prints, the commentaries of the literary and grammatical traditions and a vast range of later literature that creates a web of inter-textual references and quotations.
