Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Günter Wallraff. He was the hero of the 70s and 80s. Using controversial methods he wrote against the powers that be in Germany. In the Industrie Reportagen, in his role as the Turk Ali or as Hans Esser, editor at the Bild newspaper Günter Wallraff has repeatedly touched a raw nerve of society, his methods have polarized opinions to this day. This is the way Günter Wallraff is introduced most of the time. It is clear, however, that if many people among the young and old know about the arguably most controversial European writer, they do so just superficially. For the first time, a book comprehensively presents Günter Wallraffs literary and journalistic work, thus looking at an unknown side of his. But one can learn about some aspects of Wallraffs private life, too.
Download or read book Transculturality and Perceptions of the Immigrant Other written by Geoffroy de Laforcade and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other issue in our times of globalization has aroused such passionate debate as the increasingly complex transborder movements of people of all ethnicities, with the self-perceived “from-heres” often struggling to maintain the illusion of separateness from intruding “come-heres.” The paradigm of transculturality offers prospects to rethink, demystify and represent cultural unity and difference, assimilation and alterity, in a manner that acknowledges the fissures and the fictions in traditional cultural dichotomies such as the melodramatically instrumentalized “national” vs. “foreign.” The interdisciplinary essays compiled in Transculturality and Perceptions of the Immigrant Other focus on the ways in which new diasporic and migrational patterns arouse ill will and conflict, but also negotiation and transcultural impulses, resulting in transformed meso-structures in media, schooling, and business. Investigating regional immigrant groups in the states of Virginia and North Rhine-Westphalia as well as the discourses and images in public media, films, literature, and cultural events, the studies both document the contest for geographical, work, and community space and place it in larger theoretical and specific historical contexts. Arising from an international project undertaken by senior and junior scholars from the fields of cultural studies, history, and sociology at Norfolk State University in Virginia and University of Siegen in Germany, these essays suggest that cultural citizenship can embody dynamic expressions of belonging and strategies of empowerment which shape political and economic communities, engendering in the process innovative forms of constantly negotiated, hybrid identity and transmigratory affiliation.

Download or read book I m Not Racist But 40 Years of the Racial Discrimination Act written by Tim Soutphommasane and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Australia a 'racist' country? Why do issues of race and culture seem to ignite public debate so readily? Tim Soutphommasane, Australia's Race Discrimination Commissioner, reflects on the national experience of racism and the progress that has been made since the introduction of the Racial Discrimination Act in 1975. As the first federal human rights and discrimination legislation, the Act was a landmark demonstration of Australia's commitment to eliminating racism. Published to coincide with the Act's fortieth anniversary, this book gives a timely and incisive account of the history of racism, the limits of free speech, the dimensions of bigotry and the role of legislation in our society's response to discrimination. With contributions by Maxine Beneba Clarke, Bindi Cole Chocka, Benjamin Law, Alice Pung and Christos Tsiolkas.
Download or read book Migrant Birds on Wheels written by Marianne E. Meyer and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a friend in Topanga, the hippie community west of Los Angeles, the author came into contact with Uschi Obermaier, the mother of all supermodels. The female icon of the 68s already toured in the mid-70s in a luxury RV India, USA and Mexico. When in a picture story Marianne Meyer saw the sex symbol and her partner Dieter Bockhorn in their camping bus, the wish for such a house on wheels was born. But with the emigration to the USA everything came quite different. But after a 10-year life of luxury in LA, the conversation with the Bavarian caused butterflies in the stomach of the Ph.D. nutritionist and woke again her desire to travel. She longed for a change. An ever-changing view from the window of an apartment on wheels is exactly what her gypsies blood desires. Her mother's father was a boatmen and always on the Neckar, Rhine and Waal on the go to Rotterdam. Her first six months tour through Morocco with her husband Peter was in 1998/99. On the contrary to her famous relative Doris Day, who visited Morocco only once when she filmed the Hitchcock movie "The Man Who Knew Too Much", the author is one of the returnees. There are only two statements of tourists: Morocco once and never again and Morocco again and again.
