Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An atmospheric murder mystery set in Victorian Swansea in 1880. Evokes a convincing portrayal of life in a nineteenth century Welsh town. A plot which uses authentic locations and voices. The first in a series featuring Inspector Rumsey Bucke. Inspector Rumsey Bucke, a still-grieving widower, must find Daniel Guy who has tried and failed to murder his own wife. He tracks him steadily through the murky streets of Swansea’s poorest communities, with little help from a corrupt and incompetent police force. Two fatal stabbings, which may or may not be connected, put Bucke’s position under threat from a scheming superior. However, he finds the will and the support to change his life from an unlikely source, the wife of a prime murder suspect. As he finally confronts his own sorrow, he discovers that terrible secrets lurk beneath the surface of the ordinary lives around him. No one can ever escape from the secret burdens they carry with them. But there are unknown figures lurking in the shadows and Bucke is drawn into the dangerous world of international politics, with assassins playing out a clandestine war on the streets of the town, ready to kill the innocent to protect themselves. As he desperately runs out of time to prevent another murder, Bucke has to find the answers which have eluded him. Who is the murderer? Is it Daniel Guy? Is it someone else? Just how many murderers are there? There is a bigger question for him too. If, as they say, justice is blind, are there occasions when the law should be blind too?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When unemployed Zimbabwean Promise Murewa was apprehended at a roadblock outside Polokwane City one night, he did not have a drivers' licence. He also did not have legal papers to be in South Africa. The police found that the car he was driving belonged to a Catholic priest called Father Dorota. Promise was detained, and later information emerged that Father Dorota was murdered on the same night. So Promise became a suspect in the murder of the priest. Promise's story plays out in the courtroom as the events leading to the death of Father Dorota are revealed before Judge Mulder. While the state had been able to secure an attorney to defend Promise, a social group of Zimbabwean expatriates believes that there is more to the crime Promise is accused of committing than meet the eye. The group hires Solly ka Afrika, a private investigator, to find out what really took place. And thus the audience gets transported back to the 60s and the 70s where they encounter the sordid life of the dead priest. As the worms begin to crawl out of the woodwork, the audience, and the prosecution realise that Father Dorota was not a saint he was portrayed to be. For the fight for Promise's survival centres around the repugnant sexual abuses that he suffered at the hands of the man he is tried for killing. It is left to Judge Mulder to deliberate whether Promise is guilty of the crime or not. But did Promise kill the priest or not?

Book In CHEAP We Trust

Download or read book In CHEAP We Trust written by Lauren Weber and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2009-09-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cheap suit. Cheap date. Cheap shot. It's a dirty word, an epithet laden with negative meanings. It is also the story of Lauren Weber's life. As a child, she resented her father for keeping the heat at 50 degrees through the frigid New England winters and rarely using his car's turn signals-to keep them from burning out. But as an adult, when she found herself walking 30 blocks to save $2 on subway fare, she realized she had turned into him. In this lively treatise on the virtues of being cheap, Weber explores provocative questions about Americans' conflicted relationship with consumption and frugality. Why do we ridicule people who save money? Where's the boundary between thrift and miserliness? Is thrift a virtue or a vice during a recession? And was it common sense or obsessive-compulsive disorder that made her father ration the family's toilet paper? In answering these questions, In Cheap We Trust offers a colorful ride through the history of frugality in the United States. Readers will learn the stories behind Ben Franklin and his famous maxims, Hetty Green (named "the world's greatest miser" by the Guinness Book of Records) and the stereotyping of Jewish and Chinese immigrants as cheap. Weber also explores contemporary expressions and dilemmas of thrift. From Dumpster-diving to economist John Maynard Keynes's "Paradox of Thrift" to today's recession-driven enthusiasm for frugal living, In Cheap We Trust teases out the meanings of cheapness and examines the wisdom and pleasures of not spending every last penny.
