Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Memory of Abraham Lincoln: A Discourse Delivered in the First Congregational Unitarian Church in Detroit, Mich., Sunday, April 17th, 1865 It is befitting that in this solemn hour, when a nation's head is bowed with anguish and the sighs of afflicted millions are rolling up to heaven, that we should gird ourselves in the sable array of mourning, and pause for a moment and stand by the cold remains of him who was the greatest, best and wisest of our American statesmen, to consider his virtues, and mingle, over the dust of departed greatness, ours, with the tears of a na tion. There is something supremely solemn in the death of a great man, and when a national bereavement throws its dark shadows of disappointment upon the soul, and the chilling certainty that another harp whose tones have entranced thousands has been unstrung and hung upon the willows of death's cold river, a charm comes over us so holy and sacred that, spell-bound, we fain would sit in solemn silence, and call up before our Spirit's eye visions of the mighty dead. But it is fitting that we should give vent to our feeling, and proclaim to the world our attach ment to him who has fallen. It is fitting that we should chant a funeral requiem which shall be felt and remembered till after the funeral of this earth. We do not expect to add any new charm to the solemnity of the all-absorbing theme, but-simply to offer our tribute of praise to his memory. The appalling deed of the last. Good Friday begins to put on the fixed lineaments of the past. As that face and form, then so full of life, are frozen in death, so he who animated them is fast becoming solidified and shapen in the unchanging marble of history. Still standing in the horrible shadow, how can we carve the features of the immortal dead? The chisel shakes in our trembling hand. The rain of sorrow blinds our eyes. In the ghastly darkness, we but faintly discern the spiritual form that has so suddenly been struck from its earthly home and has forever vanished from the eyes of man. He, who but yesterday was the centre of all human observation; whose every word, as he himself declared but three nights before his death, was in no unimportant sense a national decree; from whom were the issues of life and death to the imperious leaders of the rebellion and their too willing subjects; upon whose course foreign potentates fastened watchful eyes, and foreign peoples were yet more intent; the foremost man in all the world; - now lies he low in his bloody shroud. A nation weeps around his bier. The world bemoans his fate. Never before did so wide and bitter a cry pierce the skies. When God is speaking, who shall open his mouth! He speaks to us to-day, and his word is the old voice of inspiration: "Without shedding of blood is no remission." All shedding of blood is by God's permission. Not one act of violence, not one destruction of life, not one drop of human blood shed, without his knowledge and consent. For God is infinite love, and in His perfect providence all things work together for good. Even the things that seem so terrible that men tremble as if there were a Prince of Darkness, and he were master of the universe, are compelled to do His sovereign will. He maketh the wrath of man to praise him, and the remainder of wrath shall He restrain. Ever since the beginning of the world the friends of falsehood and sin have believed that the right could be put down by shedding the blood of the righteous. Cain believed he could destroy the true worship of God by slaying Abel, the servant of God. And since his day every wicked and foolish man, every great despot, every God-defying class, every desperate member of every party of unrighteousness the world has seen has been crazed by this stupendous delusion that the Truth and Justice and Holiness of God Almighty could be driven away from the earth by killing the friends of God and man. So the world, for four thousand years, has been full of blood. None of it rests upon the hands of the consistent friends of God and man, for all they have shed has been in defense of everlasting righteousness.
