Book Why we fear

Download or read book Why we fear written by Henri Hyppönen and published by Tammi. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why We Fear gets to grips with the essence of fear in life and in business. Why We Fear uncovers the mechanisms of fear and the huge role this often misunderstood emotion plays in our daily lives. At the same time, it dismantles fear into understandable and actionable parts. When fear is divided into its constituent parts, the hidden workings of fear and fear based habits become visible. In this way, the book charts a road-map for how to deal with this often destructive emotion, and the heavy cost of fear in life and in business. Fear has always been at the very core of human experience, and yet people generally seem to believe that it is a force of nature outside their own control. Fear is often seen as a mystical, poorly understood influence that creeps up on us at the worst possible moment, wrecks our performance, dulls our wits, and makes our lives shrink. Why We Fear robs fear of this mystique. In addition, as Henkka Hyppönen points out, fear is not always a disastrous and destructive force. Sometimes, a little injection of fear helps us to perform better as individuals and as teams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Voskoboynik’s book offers an exhilarating introduction to our ecological crisis, what caused it, and how we can imagine a better future.” —Jason Hickel, author of Less Is More The Memory We Could Be moves beyond the sterile, technical language around climate change and ecology to humanize the abstraction of global warming and bring different voices into the conversation. Drawing on sources from anthropology to hydrology, botany to economics, agronomy to astrobiology, medicine to oceanography, physics to history, the author weaves a lyrical and powerful story of our relationship with nature. The book has three parts: “Past” addresses memory. Our inability to comprehend our staggering present partly lies in our ignorance of our staggering past. We peer into the black box of history to understand how we got here. We go on a journey across the roots of our ecological crisis, from the Roman Empire to the forests of Burma, from Congolese rubber plantations, to Colombian oil fields. “Present” illustrates how climate change is shaping our world today, explores how it relates to poverties and inequalities, and equips readers with a set of intuitive instruments to understand climate impacts. “Future” looks at alternatives and strives to illustrate in human terms the world we could lose and the world we can win. It asks what we can do and develops a transformative vision of a more ecological and equitable economy. The Memory We Could Be is vital reading for all of humanity. “A gripping review of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we may be headed.” —Michael E. Mann, author of The New Climate War

  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Redeeming Fear written by Jason C. Whitehead and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our brains are hard-wired to experience the emotion of fear. Yet "do not be afraid" is a common refrain from the Bible, used for both comfort and chastening. We have often treated fear as something to be dismissed or suppressed. Being afraid means more than simply fighting or running from a threat; to be afraid is to remember that something in life is worth living for. Whitehead helps us find the roots of hope in the soil of our fears so that we can form lives and communities of hope in the midst of a culture of fear.

Book Fear Extinction

  • ISBN : 3031430050
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book Fear Extinction written by Mohammed R. Milad and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide the reader a neuroscientific understanding surrounding a very simple question: how do we learn not to fear? Exploring answers to this question is very important for two reasons. First, learning about the neural mechanisms of fear extinction is of relevance to everyone’s life - it is such a basic yet relevant question to our daily experiences. Therefore, understanding brain mechanisms of fear and its regulation is essential from a basic neuroscience point of view. Second, excessive fear and the inability to regulate its expression is one of the hallmarks of fear-, anxiety-, trauma-, and stressor-related psychopathologies. And as such, learning about how fear is acquired, stored, expressed, and regulated could help advance our understanding of the etiology of psychopathology, the maintenance of symptoms pertaining to failure to regulate fear, and could help us develop novel therapeutics to equip providers and patients with the tools to better quell their fears. The contributions contained in this book are provided by experts in the fields of basic and clinical neuroscience, experimental and clinical psychology, and neuropsychiatry. The contributions are organized to start the reader with basic definitions of how we define fear, how we study its neural circuits at the molecular and cellular levels, how to study human behavior and the brain using state-of-the art experimental and statistical tools, to how much fear contributes to psychopathology. This volume ends with current advances aimed to enhance the capacity to extinguish fear; a clinical result that would aid in the treatment of multiple psychiatric disorders, followed by a discussion on future directions of this highly important and relevant field.

Book On Fear

  • Author : Jiddu Krishnamurti
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2013-07-30
  • ISBN : 0062310267
  • Pages : 148 pages

Download or read book On Fear written by Jiddu Krishnamurti and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Fear is a collection of Krishnamurti's most profound observations and thoughts on how fear and dependence affect our lives and prevent us from seeing our true selves. Among the many questions Krishnamurti addresses in these remarkable teachings are: How can a mind that is afraid love? And what can a mind that depends on attachment know of joy? He points out that the voice of fear makes the mind dull and insensitive, and argues that the roots of hidden fears, which limit us and from which we constantly seek escape, cannot be discovered through analysis of the past. Questioning whether the exercise of will can eliminate the debilitating effects of fear, he suggests, instead, that only a fundamental realization of the root of all fear can free our minds.

Book excerpt: How do you deal with your fears? Or do you? Are you one of the multitudes of persons whose fears do the dealing? Have you ever taken the trouble to get to know the most common and yet, perhaps, the least understood animal emotion? Take a little trip through these pages. You may find that fear isn't quite the enemy imagined. You may find that it's actually a valuable companion that requires proper exercise... not exorcism. Fear and groundlessness are pervasive, but according to Buddhist teacher Gaylon Ferguson, it is the very potency of this fear that makes it such a powerful tool for personal and cultural transformation. Natural Bravery offers wise and pointed teachings for helping us to look at fear with immediacy and courage, and to engage with it as a path to transform ourselves—and the world. Walking this path, we learn to cultivate fearlessness and to connect more deeply with others and with the natural world.

Book Driving out Fear with Hope

Download or read book Driving out Fear with Hope written by Rebecca Renkema and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While doing two years’ Bible research for finding how our bodies are made in very similar fashion to principles seen in the Bible, I started getting more and more interested in the verses related to hope. I started to write a daily devotional book on hope but then started to see more and more verses that did not have the word “hope” in them but spoke to me on important principles of hope. I also started to notice different verses that discussed different types of fear, what we are to fear and what we shouldn’t fear. With this, I saw just how much fear is on the other side of hope. I also saw just how much God wants to give us hope through Him. The writing of this book was a truly evolving process. I wanted to combine my paintings with these verses so that people might notice the verses more when highlighted by color, starting with just a “verse of the day.” My family led me to write more about why I picked the verses I picked, so the second part of this process turned into me writing about what I saw in these verses, turning into a starting point for journaling. I want this book to be a starting point to help people journal as they see these verses and what I felt reading them, able to add what they see. Beyond this, I want it to be a starting point for people to want to look more into the Bible and what is put in there for us. Each time I read some of my favorite passages, I’m able to see more and learn more. I want each reader to enjoy the same opportunities of this journey of walking with God through His Word. This last three years has taken a toll on a lot of people. I want this book to help encourage people to not give up, to hold on to what God offers us, even when things get tough and confusing. All pictures in this book are my paintings, and I’m hoping they will be a way to help people stay interested in all the verses on hope and how to drive out fear.

Book Fear and Fantasy in a Global World

Download or read book Fear and Fantasy in a Global World written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the mass media insist on bombarding us with news about natural, political and economic disasters, words, ideas and images associated with such “crises” and “catastrophes” shape to a great extent collective memory and current imagination. Fear and Fantasy in a Global World seeks to stir the debate on the processes and meanings of, as well as on the relations between, fear and fantasy in the globalized world. Collective fears and fantasies are analysed from a number of cross-disciplinary perspectives, promoted by the epistemological underpinnings of comparative literature. In various ways and from different disciplinary angles, the 17 essays here gathered respond to and scrutinize key questions related to the imaginaries of fear and fantasy, as well as their relations to trauma, crisis, anxiety, and representations of both the conscious and the unconscious.
