Book excerpt: From the author of Once Upon a Wine, a new novel set in the charming seashore town of Black Dog Bay, Delaware. When everything has gone to the dogs . . . When Jocelyn Hillier is named legal guardian for the late Mr. Allardyce’s pack of pedigreed Labrador retrievers, her world is flipped upside down. She’s spent her entire life toiling in the tourism industry in Black Dog Bay and never expected to be living the pampered life of a seasonal resident in an ocean side mansion, complete with a generous stipend. But her new role isn’t without its challenges: The dogs (although lovable) are more high-maintenance than any Hollywood diva, the man she wants to marry breaks her heart, and she’s confronted at every turn by her late benefactor’s estranged son, Liam, who thinks he’s entitled to the inheritance left to the dogs. Jocelyn has worked too hard to back down without a fight, and she’s determined to keep her new fur family together. As she strives to uphold the “Best in Show” standards her pack requires, Jocelyn finds love, family, and forgiveness in the most unexpected places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Havana in December to 1958 was city on the brink of revolution, but it glittered on the surface. Over the previous twenty-five years it had become the Las Vegas of the Caribbean, made so by the Mafia money that supported a corrupt and oppressive regime. Into this explosive environment came Lila Corona and her gang of jewel thieves, determined to make the greatest heist ever. She had been hired by a jewelry company to steal their own jewels and smuggle them out of the country. She encountered Chester Yellowcat, an FBI agent who had met her before, knew that she was a thief, but had never been able to prove anything. Lila spotted him tailing her, confronted him, and started a relationship with him. As the head of the FBI section at the American embassy, Chester was involved with the ambassador in finding a way to get Batista, the Mafia-supported dictator, to leave the country. To get information to pressure Batista, Chester was obliged to hire Lila and her gang to break into the National Bank to photograph information about the location of Batista’s overseas financial holdings. Lila did, and this led to her becoming Chester’s lover. Because the jewelry heist involved far more jewels than she had expected, Lila was obliged to make a deal with one of the leaders of the revolution to use his resources to smuggle the jewels to Miami. Lila and her gang left the country after the heist. Chester wanted her to go, because he was afraid to have her there during the revolutionary takeover, which he knew was coming soon. The takeover came on the morning of the New Year, when Batista, the dictator, fled the country. After a brief period of tension, Chester and the other Americans at the embassy began sorting things out. By early spring, Chester was retired and staying at a hotel at Sarasota, on the Gulf Coast of Florida. He had asked a waiter to bring him a beer. When the waiter brought him two beers, he turned around to say something to the waiter, but discovered instead—Lila.

Book excerpt: Lila's House: Male Prostitution in Latin America presents insight into male prostitution in a truly global array of Latin American countries. This study focuses on a very specific sexual culture within the realm of male prostitution: the young men of a lower/middle-class brothel catering to a broad range of clients. You will explore the culture of juvenile prostitution and learn from the immediate intervention program that was implemented. Twenty-five young men between the ages of 13 and 27 were interviewed for this study. They share with you their views on: sexual initiation sexual definition sexual orientation love drug use prostitution family relationships relationships with men and women The young men interviewed for this study are in serious danger of being exposed to the AIDS virus and of becoming addicted, if they are not already, to cocaine, crack, or alcohol. Those conducting the study initiated a campaign to supply condoms and raise the young men's awareness about AIDS and drugs and began an immediate support program. The project resulted in the establishment, in June 1997, of an alternative home for juvenile prostitutes, which offers various opportunities for education and work.

Consumed by jealousy, Jules is ready for her close-up—and no one is better prepared than her for her next big role . . . Taking readers on a whirlwind of madness and obsession from London to New York to Los Angeles, “Moggach’s examination of the unbalanced mind is spellbinding, and the characters horribly believable. . . . Book excerpt: There is nothing like racial injustice in America to teach an outsider the differences between perception and reality. “Powerful in message . . . An engaging, warm-hearted, page-turner of a novel.” —New West Indian Guide For Lila Bonnard, the opportunity to take a position as a visiting professor in the US has come at precisely the right time. Still nursing the wounds of one failed relationship and facing uncertainty over her current boyfriend’s marriage proposal, spending a year at a small liberal arts college in a picturesque Vermont town offers her sanity a well-deserved rest. Within moments of her arrival, Lila is forced to face anti-immigrant mentalities and becomes a witness to the fatal police shooting of an unarmed Black man—a fellow professor at Mayfield who was giving CPR to a white woman. The three Black faculty members in the otherwise all-white, tight-lipped college expect Lila to testify in the case—but at what cost? Mistrust of outsiders, racial tensions, even outright condemnation of others who “don’t know their place” . . . all of it comes crashing down around her as she confronts the dangers of speaking out against the police. Now Lila Knows is a gripping story that explores our obligation to act when confronted with hatred and prejudice. A page-turner with universal resonance, this novel will leave readers rethinking the meaning of love, empathy, and even humanity.
